I play both WoW and Guild Wars, played WoW for about 8 months, and GW for over a year.
Guild Wars is very different to most online RPGs, its world isn't persistant, instead every area outside an outpost is instanced for your group, this is great in the way that you aren't disturbed whilst playing, it also allows you to travel to any town via the map in an instant which is really convenient - on the flipside of this it can make the map feel less worldly and unpopulated.
The game also uses a unique battle system based almost entirely around skills - it's devastatingly simple at first glance, but perfecting your skill build is difficult and also really fun. Guild Wars isn't really dependant on gear to a certain extent, while items do vary, they don't vary in a way that 1 piece is clearly superior to the other, just that certain weapons/armour are suited to different play styles.
PvE in Guild Wars is really fun and fast paced, although it is very linear - if you are coming from WoW then you know that it offers alot of choice in which quests you want to do and which areas you want to explore, Guild Wars employs a more linear storyline in which you have to follow to a certain degree - while this ensures you will never get lost - it can sometimes suck 3rd and 4th time around
Also Guild Wars doesn't have much in the way of raiding/end-game content at the moment, so once you finish up your quests, you'll probably go onto PvP, re-roll a different class, or help others.
Then there is PvP, and my is it awesome and varied, easily the best PvP ever - GW's skill based setup ensures that time spent does not equal power. There are many different types of PvP:
Random Arenas: You are grouped randomly with 3 others and fight another team in fast paced gladiator style battles.
Team Arenas: Like the above except you choose your team players.
Hero's Ascent: Fight in teams of 8 in the ongoing Tournament to gain fame and ranks, and claim the favour of the gods for your RL country/region (favour allows certain PvE areas to become available to your region).
Guild Vs. Guild: 2 Guilds battle it out to climb the Guild ladder and increase in rank.
Alliance Battles: (GW:Factions exclusive)- my favourite, choose to fight for the Kurzicks or the luxons in a 12 vs. 12 flag capturing large scale battle to push the battle lines across the world of cantha and claim PvE outposts for your Faction, the AB map changes as one side pushes the other back/forward.
Competitive Missions (Factions Only), large scale battles involving skirmishes, bombarding, flag capping and material collecting.
As you can see PvP is much more varied than WoW, and Guild Wars is worth a purchase purely on that basis, although you may not find the PvE to your taste if you like super-geeky stats, armour, and weapons.
