I'm probably not the first to realize you can do this, but I'm probably the first to extensively exlpore with it.
The trick is you can cross over almost any non-locked portal without zoning, thus allowing you to explore the parts of the map that over-lap. There is no real advantage to this, it's just a lot of fun. Plus you get to see some of the underlying textures on the maps which is neat.
It's pretty easy to figure out how to do it, so I'll let you guys figure it out for now. If no one can figure out how I'll post how tomorrow.

There is nothing there... its just a copy of the map so it overlaps slightly so it doesn't look like a big empty space when you look past a portal.
And it's not exploiting some kind of bug or glitch in the game... perfectly legit. Anyone can do it anywhere on any map, so I don't see how it can get you banned, because it's harmless.

Also, the maps end ubruptly so you can't just walk out forever... there are still invisable walls and stuff blocking you in the normal perimeter.

There is one spot I know of where you can simply walk around the portal, at dragon's lair, but as I said I can cross over any portal I want... (as long as I start in an exlorable area... that's a hint.)

Trust me this is not like Dragon's lair... there wont be anyone around for you to "trick" into crossing over portal like you do at dragons lair because you can only do it from an explorable area.

It happened with me once, in lutgard's conservatory. I was farming the monk boss there and exited the outpost hugging the left wall. Then I was walking around melandru's hope. It's just a glitch, I think It can happen in any portal actually. You don't get anything from this, maps are empty, no mobs, no npcs, no cartographer %. If you try to go back inside, you will be then teleported to the real map you were going to. Maps are not infinite anyways, those cuts in the picture means that at certain point, it will be discontinuous.

You've always been able to do this... If you get some serious client-side lag just before zoning. I've run through portals and explored around before, just to be rubber-banded back to where I started (or error 007'd) when the latency caught up.

and no, this is different. you are still in game. you are exploring it. you are connected. you are getting explorer points if you uncover shit. you can go through previously closed gates. et cetera.
