Random Arena Help
Black Ops Ranger
I love playing Rangers
I love playing in Randoms
All my previous attempts to mix the two have ended up with an ally using res sig calling me a noob.
Can someone help me?
I like Barrage but also have Poisen Arrow and Oath Shot for my elites
Offer any Random Arena Builds you can think of
PS: No Touchers or Bunny Thumpers, I want to play like a Ranger (Ranging or Trapping)

Try my beastmaster/poison build:
Ferocious Strike
Brutal Strike
Call of Haste
Apply Poison
Troll Unguent/Whirling Defense/Predatory Bond (I usually take Whirling, but thats up to you)
Comfort Animal
Charm Animal
Res Signet
I find that its a pretty solid Pressure build.

In RA you're gonna find loads of Warriors.
Cripshot is your best friend, add Apply Poison, Troll Unguent, Distracting Shot, Hunter Shot to add pressure, Whirling Defence or Throw Dirt, obviously a Rez Sig and a utility slot, could be Blackout, a kind of Trap or what you feel comfortable with...and you got the classic Cripshot Ranger, one of the best builds ever seen!

Broad Head Arrow is a great skill for RA after it got buffed, won a couple of glad points with this build:
Marks:12
Exper: 14
WS: 10
Bread Head Arrow[E]
Savage Shot
Distracting Shot/Needling Shot
Apply Poison
Pin Down
Troll Unguent
Whirling Defence
Res Signet
Just Daze your target, but beware with BHA's arc. Use the interrupt shots to hit your target fast.
Take Pin Down so you'll also do some dmg to Touchers/Warriors

^Don't bother with Broad Head Arrow... take Crippling Shot or Poison Arrow.
There are two things you need to beat in RA. The team that wins the most battles in RA is the team that has both a monk, and a warrior with an elite offensive skill. So build to break the monk, and annoy the warrior.
Daze is an underpowered condition, it really isn't worth the price or trouble of getting it applied. Rather you should focus on spreading as many conditions as possible to as many on the opposing team as possible. The will get removed, purged, Plauge touched, etc, but that's not the point. The point is that they have to address the conditions or they will get rolled. Personally, my favorite combo is Crippling Shot with Apply Poison. Add hunter's shot and you have three conditions that you can easily apply to the other team. Apply rather than Poison Arrow because you can spread it, and keep it on all four people. Throw dirt is also great to annoy warriors and it's another condition. Bring at least one interrupt, and an evasion stance. Troll ungent is meh in my book, but you're milage may vary.
In short, break the monk with conditions, annoy the warrior.

Just a tip, never take Barrage into RA. The elite I have had the best success with in RA is Escape {E}. Since if is a form of PvP in which you cannot rely on having a monk to heal/protect you, having a strong defense is very important. Use Apply Poison and Hunter's Shot to be able to lay down some degen then avoid damage. Also never leave home without at least one interupt if you are running a bow based build. I generally run this build:
Hunter's Shot
Savage Shot
Apply Poison
Barbed Trap or Pin Down
Throw Dirt
Escape {E}
Troll Unguent
Rez Sig

Another thought....
High pressure damage builds (ie... Thumpers) leave alot of amatuer monks flat on their butt (oftentimes literally). Either an Enraged Lunge thumper build or a Ferocious Strike Thumper build work well enough in RA. So long as you don't go head to head with the bonehead spamming Riposte and Glads defense. <sigh> There is a thread in the Team Arena Builds section that talks about common TA builds (it's near the top) and any of those ranger builds will work fine.
You do however have to realize, that no matter how brilliant and infalible your build is... your success is dependant on three other randomly added sorted and assigned people. It can be incredibly frustrating to find yourself in a group that has 1.) No monk. or 2.) No damage output. You can squeak by without a Mesmer or Ele in RA... but unfortunately, you will get nowhere fast if your only warrior is spamming Defy Pain and Healing Breeze.

personally I feel thumpers are great in ra, and I like to load wild blow if I can

Another suggestion to try if you want something different is a dagger based ranger build such as the following:
Jagged Strike
Wild Strike
Horns of the Ox
Falling Spider
Lightning Reflexes
Escape {E}
Troll Unguent or Shadows Refuge
Rez Sig

ooh, yeah... another thingy to play around with that I've not done much of with my ranger: r/a thanks man
Forsaken Druid
Heres a build that works well in RA
Fav Winds ( very useful for high dmg)
Crip Shot
Hunters Shot
Apply Poison
Throw Dirt
Res Sig
Troll
Savage Shot

Sir Mad
Very true.
Basically in RA if you're not a monk be as offensive as you can. Rangers are lucky enough to have expertise skills to keep them alive. 2 of them should do the job. IF you have a WS build, bring troll (a 10 arrows regen is more than welcome), otherwise i'd say forget it: 3 secs to cast for what? a 4 arrows regen is not worth it IMO. For the other skills, it depends on your mood, but make sure you deals a lot of damage. Punshot, cripshot (to screw the warrior), poison arrow + kindle or even ignite, are your best friends. Bring a preparation: apply poison or read the wind (for marks builds) or kindle (for WS builds). Spirits are not needed IMO: they're good only if you're in a spefic build, generally with other rangers - RA is too... randomish for that. Make sure as well you can SPAM your skills - after all that's what rangers are good at (which means: check the recharge time of your skills).
And for the "noob" part of your story: just mute the all chat.

I've recently gone back to RA with my ranger for a bit of fun. Here are two builds that have gotten me a gladiator point:
Classic Choking Gas Ranger/Warrior:
Practiced Stance {E}
Choking Gas
Savage Shot / Debilitating Shot / Distracting Shot
Flurry
Throw Dirt
Whirling Defense
Rez Signet
Zealous Short Bow, Druid's Armor
14 WS
13 Exp
Rest in Marksmanship
Helps to have a monk on your team, but you can roll through casting based teams with this. When running this I've gotten quite a few "I hate you" and "FU and your choking gas" comments. No caster can withstand this build. The only thing that will stop it is heavy pressure from a warrior or assassin.
Another build I've run that's netted me a gladiator point is this one:
Read the Wind
Crippling Shot {E}
Marauder's Shot
Hunter's Shot
Savage Shot
Whirling Defense
Troll Unguent
Rez Signet
16 Marks
13 Exp
4 WS
+5 energy recurve bow with a crippling string. Grip is optional. I've been using a +1 Marks 20% grip because I had it sitting in storage. 30hp would probably be better. Maybe a +5 armor grip... Use whatever you like.
This build is great for removing pressure from your caster team members. If you're fortunate to have a monk then they will appreciate all the limping warriors/sins chasing them. Be sure to manage your energy well since spamming CS will deplete you quickly. I also use this build to cripple fleeing casters. Sins appreciate this because some of their skills trigger on the target having a condition.

Do not try this: I doubt you have a long life expectancy in RA with 3 sup runes
Also remember you can't r-spike alone...

Maybe I'm wrong but to achieve that point distribution you would need 2 Superior Runes and 1 Godly Rune (+4/-100), 3 superior wouldn't be enough!

I usually go into RA with this simple interrupt/spike build.

10 Expertise
1. Whirling Defense
2. Distracting Shot
3. Savage Shot
4. Punishing Shot
5. Dual Shot
6. Read the Wind/Kindle Arrow
7. Troll Unguent
8. Resurrection Signet
This build usually works great on all professions except warriors because of their thick armor and monks that have quick 1/4 second heals. Other than those two, you can easily interrupt most professions (most noticeably the long casting ritualists) while doing decent damage at the same time.
A great weapon to have is a Recurve Bow to minimize the arc size of your arrows for interrupts, especially when you plan on using Kindle Arrow instead of Read the Wind. A full set of Druid's Armor is also recommended for the extra energy.

Poison Ivy
Here's a nice build you might enjoy, it can normally earn me a glad point every time I go in with it, unless if I e7.
Pin Down
Poison Arrow [E]
Distracting Shot
Ignite Arrows
Barbed Trap
Troll Ungent
Whirling Defence
Ressurection Signet
It's a simple build really, Pin Down for those Wars, spam Barbed in choak points or near your casters for easier and better kiting, don't forget the bleeding bonus + poison arrow = 7 degen.
Distracting for interupting key spells or Rez Sigs, Ignite Arrows for extra and splash damage, and Troll Ungent for healing.
Use Whirling Defence if your Pin Down is recharging and your traps are spent while a Warrior is whacking away at you.
Ressurect you allies ASAP.

^ I'd add dual shot to this build, instead of barbed trap (or instead of pin down and snare instead of barbed). But yeah I like this kind of build too.
EDIT - Oh and I prefer Kindle: ignite adds fire damage while kindle converts your attack to fire (and adds some more damage): that's more efficient against warriors. That's not good against other rangers, but anyway rangers are always a pain for rangers

Build I use for TA (I don't see why it wouldn't work for RA. I usually only RA when testing stuff):

Troll Unguent
Kindle Arrows/Seeking Arrows

Ressurection Signet
11 + 1 marksmanship, 10 + 1 Wilderness Survival, 10 + 1 Expertise
I don't like sup and maj runes. I actually prefer seeking than kindle arrows for this kind of match. All you need to do is run around spreading poison and then focus on one person (could be anyone) and interrupt them till they die (since your maskmanship isn't bad). Throw dirt + Whirling defence is handy vs warriors and assassins and on the rare occassions another ranger picks you as their target. there's no anti-hex tho, so watch out for mesmers and necros. Remember to spread poison around periodically, or all the time when facing a monk with something against conditions.

Poison arrow is great because you can use it in conjunction with a preparation. Also barbed trap is awesome in this build because you get to watch those wars you just hit with pin down slowly walk off there cripple and charge you only to hit the trap you just layed at your feet

Oh yeah this is a build i like to use, it's MY BUILD i dont care if someone else has posted this somewhere because i have been using it ever since they gave pets a boost.

You can do a nice hunk of dmg with that, switch out a skill for blood renewal or get rid of res sig for Ab battles and bring it. In RA this build absolutely slaughters w/mo's i've took 2 on at the same time and wiped them easy. Once you get the timing down you can hit melandru's assault at the same time as vamp touch and do a nice hunk of scary dmg especially against enchanted foes then follow it up with brutal and vamp touch, inexperienced monks seldom catch the dmg and ele's get absolutely nailed.
