to test a theory i started a mesmer in presear
manitoba1073
PS mods if this isnt the right spot feel more than free to move it as im not sure exactly where to do this at.
now ive played mesmer before. this is to see what items and how much gold a person can indeed get from start to finish in prophicies with out farming. now my mesmer will have these restrictions and if u guys can think of more fair restrictions let me know. and when she reaches the last mission on the fire islands ill have a picture of the Xunlai storage agent.
restrictions
1. no access to storage.
2. no farming (only drops picked up doing quests only)
3. no going out of the way to get stuff
4. no being ran anywhere
5. follow the linerity of the game
6. maybe 2-3 hours a night maximum playtime on this character
if u guys can come up with some other suggestions that way to be completely fair let me know. also feel free to say hi anytime shes playing. IGN is Tam Borine, hehe it was the name of my dervish
now i wont start playing her till maybe wednseday because i know some of u guys will have good ideas for it. so let me guys know what else migh be good. i picked mesmer as its the hardest class in props to get into pugs.
and heres her start picture shes sat for 30 mins hehe while i typed this up.

And what can you prove with this?
That you're a pack-rat and don't need storage to top that off?

no access to my storage means having nothing availiable from previous chars to help along the way. we will see what happens is all it proves
arcanemacabre
I did that once...
Oh yeah, the first time I played Guild Wars. Worked out pretty well.

You have to have some parameters to do an experiment. Otherwise you are just playing the game with nothing to prove.
manitoba1073
the perameters are what the restrictions i put on and i aslo asked if there was any more ideas for others. i usually play 6 or so hours a night on all my characters. now basically this mesmer is gonna be done as a casual player would play. and the reason for no access to my storage for this mesmer is i have a ton in it, and i want this one to start out as a player that just got the game, ofcourse i have more experience than they would. but i want the means to be the same.
Arcador
Maybe his parents are reading this and they forbid him from playing the game. If this is the case: GOOD job on this school project buddy! With this theory aproved, you will have no problem entering the elites of the universities your parents always wanted you to go!

Otherwise your inventory space will be limited (due to spending slots on saving nice items u collect = less gold from selling junk to merchants. And your test would be worthless
And the following quote is for the above people who can't read

Just my thoughts, good luck on your experiment

I started playing Prophecies with a mesmer, and he was my only character until 3 months after I got Factions. I didn't know how to "55-ing" back then, so you can say I don't really farm in the sense of most farmers'.
How do you think I survived that, with all Me/Mo skills on my character AND a set of 15k armor too?
And I'm SO SURE I'm not the only one, we all started with nothing in storage once.

i know what the OP doing, but I think the test is a little bit extreme. I've done a watered down version of this.
I simply gauged my play time, looked at the locations I was playing, and came up with averages on how much money I make for certain amount of play time.
I took out other factors like buying keys, buying skills, and solo farming.
I found that high level areas ( anywhere the enemies are level 20 or higher ) generated between 1-2k for an hour of playing. This would include PuG's, going henchway for quests, or trying to get to one outpost to another.
That money was mostyly out of just going to the merchant and selling everything I had. Add in rare materials and the possible sup rune my numbers would increase a bit.
All in all I never have money issues in GW except for one. When I want 15k armor. I only bought one set so far, but am currently saving up for a set for another character.
I mean its an interesting idea the Op has, but I done this before with my first character. She's a monk and I never had any problems with cash with her, that is untill I started buying caps and more skills later in the game.
You don't really need loads of cash to play this game since 1.5 k armor is no different from 15k. and IMHO collectors and crafters have pretty good items compared to greens that sell for alot.
But it would be interesting to see how much that generates. I say go forth and restrict yourself form buying any skills, keys, and runes as well.

I think you should clear your inventory or use 1 of ur other character as a mule for the duration of this experiment. Also, use collector's armour only when you have the required items without going to look for them. I'm curious to know how much money u can get.
Avarre
With a mesmer as my first character, I had 2 pieces of 15k as soon as I reached Citadel... a black dye + salvaging and selling drops left me with quite a decent amount of money... the other two pieces weren't far behind, and I had a full set before I finished Hell's.
R_Frost
i agree with the using another character for a mule idea. a person playing the game the first time with no other characters would have access to storage and i think you should be able to use your storage too. other then that it should be interesting to see the results.

I'm confused! Exactly what theory is the OP testing? Sounds more like an experiment to me.
Theory:
A proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural, in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact.
Experiment:
A test, trial, or tentative procedure; an act or operation for the purpose of discovering something unknown or of testing a principle, supposition, etc.

2-3 hours means that you're joining max groups or bringing along the maximum number of henchmen, which should mean (after purchasing max 1.5K armor and runes, which I'm assuming is in your plan) you should wind up with very little to no gold unless you find a black dye or a superior vigor/monk runes that give you a massive cash infusion.
If you do it solo (without henchmen), I guarantee that you have 100K in gold with max 1.5K armor by the time you're done.

Vahn Roi
I recently cleared Prophecies with my ele. (all missions and quests) and I only made about 10-15k from start to finish. I think the idea is just to make enough for what you need (i.e. Max AL armor) and even without money one could still get by using collectors.
Amity and Truth
Aww seriously folks, don't get worked up about wording oO
If you're that keen on wordings, well... even ID abuses a hole in the scientifical Fact and Theory system to claim itself a fact. So don't get too serious on words.
About the experiment. It's something i'm interested in seeing the outcome. A question though, will you salvage stuff and maybe even craft staff to increase the worth of things? Will you sell gold items you get on your way to the end? Dyes? Or simply summarizing up the drops from start to finish? Will you do all the quests? Or just the skillquests? Collectors Armor (though that includes going out to farm stuff).

sour fruit
In the Factions campaign i made just under 110k from the story line ^^
tomcruisejr
i tried this too. after 1++ years, i got 5 pvp ready rp characters (including my first character which is also a mesmer) and 1 pvp slot.
Ozric
If this enterprise is solely for the purpose of seeing what an avg. player ends up with whose only purpose is to see the game from start to finish, pre-storage days, then I'd hasten a guess that your mesmer will end up with Drok's armor, a mediocre weapon unless you do indeed go a bit out of the way for a collector or two (as I think some might), and 15k gold plus or minus.
Happy hunting!
Happy hunting!
Solar_Takfar
what the above poster said, except about 20-30k rather than 15k. I did that a short while ago with my nec, that's what I got.
SirErnieMacGloop
Interesting idea... nice way to show everyone who always complains about money in game what you get just for playing the game through, without resorting to name calling, flaming or bashing.
I would recommend that if this character you are using gets an exceptional drop (ie: sup vigor) or something that you not include that gold as part of your total.
FYI: Everyone kinda did this with the NF preview, no access to storage or other character's things. Over the weekend I made it to within 1300xp of lvl 20, after buying max armor for the preview and following all the quests I could find, without "farming" my total gold was almost 10k.

Look at Victo's Blade. Mathematically a perfect sword - I myself used it for many months, and all for the low low price of 5-8k. Compare that to a gold sword with exact same stats, and you're saving dozens of platinum.
On topic, I don't see why this experiment needs so much flaming. It's a valid question, and having just completed Biochemistry coursework, I don't see any holes in his plan.
GrandCharm~
Yeah go manitoba ! (its where i live)
LifeInfusion
For your experiment, I find it interesting you chose the mesmer profession.
Mathematically if you make a monk you will be about 10 times more productive than making any other class. Why? No other class is wanted by nearly every group...

My Ranger was my first character, and I remember exactly how much gold I got and what happened with me.
I got to level 4 before leaving Pre-Searing and gathered a mere 1k. I bought Ascalon armor and continued on. I bought nothing until Amnoon, where I bought new armor, blowing ALL of the money I gathered on the way. When I got to drok's, I spent hours upon hours just trying to get the money I needed for the armor. I then proceeded from there to finish the game, doing quests as I got them.
Final results:
Non-max damage bow with no mods, no runes, 1.5k armor, no dyes, non-upgraded bags, and a grand total of less than 2k. Oh, and I didn't buy a single skill. Quest rewards ftw. The game took about a month and a half to finish.
As for the NF preview, I made 1.5k with one stroke of heavy farming and doing every quest I saw. Of course, that's after armor and skill purchases, so the "grand total" I made is probably closer to 8k.

yes i choose mesmer for the reason it will be the hardest to get into pugs.
the main reason im not gonna use storage at allis this way its all on this character from start to finish. easier to keep track of things. not to mention the 1 mill and full storage dont help either.
figure this will give a low end of what the normal playing character can expect even from the worse possible character type.
hehe i didnt see any other restrictions yet from u guys. i dont want it easy on me. lets see what would the worst possible secondary for mesmer be.
thinking maybe war as secondary.
she will salvage what she needs for armors at the big cities only. no collectors stuff.any thing else she doesnt need will go to merchants and traders only. so there will be no trading to ppl either.
glad some ppl like the idea. remember 2 days till i start so what secondary will be the hardest?
just so u guys also know its my 16th character. and i have been playing for 16 months also.

Kinda pointless, it is like playing the game the first time without any friends or strangers to help you.
Former Ruling
Already did this, called "my first character".
Ended the game in 15k Druids Armor, and ~20k in storage.

Mammoth
nice idea, let us know how it ends up for sure, unlike the people who are either saying they've done it or disagree... things have changed a lot since the release when i made my first char :P so i would find it interesting to see how successful a new player could be these days...
W Yuko
I think this is a really good idea - to start out fresh to c how much u end up! Beside gold - may be u can look at Time to complete too. (say an average joe of 2-3hrs a day - will take him how long to really finish it). 3 hrs is the restriction too per day
Well my 2cents of suggestion is that no shortcut nor running ard the cities. Just purely playing thru the game like a v first timer. Which u already pointed and stated and another restriction is that if u are retricted to use henchman only for all quests and mission too.
Bear in mind some of the end game mission is really hard to do with AI - so i dont know how frustrated u will be - but if u really must need help - then ask guildies for monk assistance only. Tats another restriction but exclusion to the Monk part.
Well since u start off fresh - then u might as well time yourself how long and how far u can go everyday - and to probably detailed down the possible mission that is too hard to hench thru - i believe u are a very experience player and just trying to find something out of the box to do
So i wish u all the best and if u need any help on the monk part - pls whisper me ign - W Yuko. More than happy to do any missions with u.
