improve the ship ride
dreamhunk
ok the ship rid is instanced. There is some of us who would rather rid a ship to cantha and nightfall. i think that would be much cooler than instance to where I want to go. maybe even a movie seen.

Its already annoying not being able to just map to cantha or Tyria If you are in Cantha.
I don't want anything to make it even longer.
Map travel is instant, Boat travel is annoying
Now you want to make it Long and annoying? No thank you.

Boat travel would be great, about once.
p.s. never.

Maybe a new title is needed. The trigger would be to travel by ship and do at least 3 missions, then travel to a new continent and do 3 missions, etc. I also hate the continent travel implementation. For instance, if I am in UW and I go to the Guild Hall via the Guild menu for an alliance battle, I am now in Cantha and can map travel there. If I want to go back to Temple of Ages, I have to go through 2 loading screens.
I'm not sure of a solution, but it seems bulky.

Ships FTW.
Maybe make some ship arenas instead of traveling? Or even a giant ship as a Guild Hall! Oh my. /faints

Sure a cut scene would be nice but it would be 1 extra button (skip) to push.

I would prefer it you click on the boat, choose the continent and instead of zoning you to a hub on that continent it just changed the map you were looking at.

I think it would be nice to have a short little cinematic the first time you travel to a new continent. It would only show up when you do the actual quest to get from one continent to the other. After that you just map.
The cine could show a skyline of the new continent. When traveling to Elona you might see a pyramid or something in the distance.

I think this tops my list of the "TOP TEN WORST GW IDEAS EVER"
This hits the charts at #9 But I expect a big jump for it on next weeks top ten. I absolutely hate having to take that ship to get to other continents, i wish i could jdut map travel to any place in cantha from any place in prophecies and so on.

Maybe as a one time mission, when you complete it you can sail back and forth with one click.

7/8 players have opted to skip this real time cut-scene of actual sea crossing footage. Currently 1 Hr remaining until you cross the Channel and hit Fran....Cantha!

Maybe a skippable cutscene the very first time, then never again.

Go play lineage (for example) and tell me what you think about trasportation there!
( paying for a gatekeeper to tele you, sometimes big money, or taking a ship takes 15 minutes in that game)
Then come play gw and realize how much more accessible and easy transportation there is than in any other game.

MM. ok, it'd be nice if THE FIRST voyage you ever made between continents had an instanced mission, or maybe just a cutscene, which could be repeatable later (but only if you wanted it). Certainly would help the story flow, and might filter a few of the lv2s being run and then moving from tyria to cantha.

Silly Warrior
although it sounds really cool, it could never work, it would have to be in mission form.
the way guild wars works couldn't ever support this...even though it is really cool.
Plus, I don't want to skip a cutscene everytime, or even take time seeing a boat when I change continents... I just want to get there....go farming...you know.

LOL @ WOW related suggestion.
WOW needs this becaue of no instancing. There would be problems with the timing if they didn't have it. We don't need this because of instances.

And the people who says "Sure, it will be nice to have it just the first time"
If you're only going to see it once, whats the point?

A better idea would be...
Tweak the ship so that you could travel to the town of your choice, so that people with slower PCs wouldn't die and have to load for 10 minutes in Kaineng.

While we're at it, why not add a land travel whenever we map to a different town on the same map? The current method is annoying enough. I hate having to go through the Temple of Balthazar just to get to the arenas.

I'm more in behind the idea of all areas in one big world map rather than make the transfer more longer.

And then again why would Anet bother to make it if people are simply going to skip it after the first time? And for those who would link my remark to the last, having a cutscene which involves a mission is probably different to one where you sail off to another continent.

I actually like sailing on ships to get around in online RPG's, so I understand where the OP's coming from, but it just wouldn't fit in GW. The whole point of map travel is that you can go anywhere you want instantly.
For people who want to sail on a ship, here's my idea: An outpost. It'd be just like a normal outpost (selectable map location) except that it would be a big ship that always appears to be sailing out in the middle of the ocean. Something like this would be easy to work into the story. To get there the first time, you're in some city somewhere and the story calls for you to sail to some place or other. You talk to a guy at the docks and tell him you want to sail there. You end up at the ship outpost, in the middle of the ocean. From there, you can look for PUGs just like in any other outpost, and then talk to the captain when you're ready to go to the destination. From then on, you can just select the ship as if it were any other normal map location. And those who want to spend time sailing around in the ocean can go there and sit on the ship as long as they want. :P

Try Playing Age of Sail and see how long that takes to get ship moving especailly upwind Tacking.

/not signed. Having ships is a cool idea, but it just doesn't fit GW. Now having the ship we currently have is something completely different, and really, really anoying. If there was a cinimatic there, I don't think my characters would ever go to different continents unless I have to.
Or better yet, we finally have the maps merged. That would mean its all one big map. It would make the world feel more like a world instead of random continents that are supposedly close to each other. It would also greatly benifit the people with the slower computers. I have already come up with ways to prevent being able to go to chapters you haven't bought yet(in other posts and I don't want to type them yet again), so that isn't a problem, and there will be no anoying boat thing!
I'm starting to think I should just make a new thread on this merged map thing since no one ever seems to notice it...
