So i stop playing for like a year, come back-- and 3 of my characters have 'presents'
I open them and I have a miniature bone dragon, necrid horseman, and miniature temple guardian
I ask around and find that they're worth a lot of gold.
Can someone explain how I got these and what they do?

You get them as birthday presents if your character is one year old. They are just for show. You can only show one mini pet at a time and only in explorable areas. They don't attack or agro or die.

I hate to sound like a newb, but what's FoW armor?
I bought the game when it came out, got a lvl 20 w/mo with knight's armor-- stopped playing up until now, so I'm very out of the loop. Is knight's armor even the best any more?

The Pointless
FoW = Fissure of Woe. A High level area accessible from Temple of the Ages (Tyria) and Zin Ku Corridor (Cantha). You need to be Ascended (Tyria) or Weh no Su (Cantha) to get in and it'll cost 1K for the whole party to get in.
And FoW armour: The only difference between what's available in Drok's and that is simply the looks.
[EDIT] You can't say Knight's armour is the best, because it's down to personal opinion. I use Gladiator's armour myself (I'm Mes 2nd)

The Pointless
Oooh, Droknar's Forge (1.5K) or Marhan's Grotto (15K). It boosts your energy a bit, but not by a great deal, so I pack a Jeweled Chalice to keep at 40 energy.
In Cantha the 1.5K starts from Kaineng Center, then the Luxon/Kurzick towns, with Faction 15K at the next outpost (which you reach by finishing the mission after Cavalon/House zu Heltzer). After that, Ascended armour (again, 15K) can be crafted on Divine Path, I think. That's pretty much near or at the end of the Factions campaign.
[EDIT] ANet added a titles system with the launch of Factions. The percentages are Explorer titles.

Knights was never best. In fact, it was the worst set to have as a full set.
But the bug was fixed, the bonus nerfed and the armour itself was buffed.
So now it basically comes down to this:
Knights: vs physical (like trollfarming)
Dreadnaughts/plate/dragon/wyvern: not bad, not best at anything, the golden middle way or something like that
Sentinel/legionnaires: for more dedicated warrior persons
Gladiators: for those who PvP or don't really give a rats behind when it comes to having defense in PvE (it doesn't really matter THAT much but, oh well, you decide)
I use sentinel most of the time.

My account is 15 months old but I have one character that is under 1 month old. Only two of mine have been around 12 months, the next oldest is 8 so I still have a little while before I get another pet.
