1) Yes, you need to get to a place in the original campaign called Lions arch, from there you'll be able to come over to a certain city in GW:NF lands and you'll be able to play from there
2) No, each campaign is seperate from the others (standalone) but does infact expand existing content if you already have the other campaign(s)
3) Both, see above

You do not need to buy GW:Factions no. Factions has some interesting elements which I loved but a lot of people didn't so its hard for me to recommend. It really depends on the kind of person you are. I personally found prophecies combat boring and easy, factions has a lot of combat. A lot. And its (to me) intense and enjoyable. A large portion of the community absolutely despise factions as they feel there was way too much fighting. Each to his own. Theres other differences aswell, armour, items skills - oh yeah. Factions got Assassins and Ritualists which you can only be if you own factions and exisiting classess all got new skills which are only available to you if you buy Factions so if you want those things you'll need Factions. SO yeah.. personally I loved Factions to bits but I know a large amount of people despise it with all their being.. so.. tough call
You level to 20 REAL fast in Factions. Vast majority (4/5th atleast) of the game is "endgame" or post level 20. - Something I love but a lot of people HATE. Apparently a long slow climb to endgame is more enjoyable to PvE... like I said.. my personal taste is different... so depends on what kind of person you are really ^_^
Also, you can start a character in GW:NF and explore the noobie lands of GW:NF so you dont *have* to bring your ranger to lions arch... but do if you're attached to him/her
