Black dye farming.
Jahuta
I need a few, and seeing as how I might be the ONLY person on the boards that can't afford to buy them, does anyone know the BEST place to farm them? The one with the best chance for them to drop? Thanks.
shrouded^god
Ive had my best luck with the hydra in ascalon foothills...could of been a freak accident but got 2 in one run as well as a silver.

A friend of mine solos undead in Kryta - as well as making about 120k a day, she also gets about 0-2 black dyes a day. I think she had 5 or so last week.

...aye.

I'd guess the Undeads in the Gates of Kryta Mission. If you trigger a certain event first, you will get a HUGE load of enemies. Think along the lines of 40-50 Undead plus you can afterwards go and kill another 20 Undeads. All in the matter of roughly 5 Minutes. Each run nets you 1 Plat and lots of Dyes.
A build is easy enough to come up with. Insert Judges Insight, insert Strength of Honor and just Cyclone / Triple Chop through the undead. Each hit deals roughly 150-200 damage and kills the horde in seconds.

What certain event? This gets more interesting the more I read

When you reach a certain area, ALOT of undead spawn.
Addone_Abaddon
Catacombs in pre-searing, I get loads every time I go in there

I think I know what area you're talkin about manager, hmm... I'll have to test that today... and as Amity said, judges, cyclone, tripple chop ftw....

I can see that this undead farming is going to get talked about.
I think your friend should maybe write something about this and make up a topic or something.

Hmmm. I might have to see that 'event' as well. I swear, in my entire carrerr of GW, which spans back into the Prophecies closed beta's, I only had maybe 5 black dyes drop for me ever.
Incidentaly, mind telling me which event this is and how to trigger it?
Also, wouldn't a smite monk handle it effectively? And if I'm right, I need to work on one, other than 55.

the area in question used to be a back door to the end on the mission, you could finish it in a matter of a few minutes, the has since been blocked, but if you kill a nearby grasp an entire army of undead show up, I used to train my pets there to get them dire easily.
To get there go to oink and look at the nearby house, there is a pathway behind this house just follow it along.

Well.
You enter the Gates of Kryta Mission, fire up your enchantments and head out. After a few seconds two krytan peasants will come running to you and scream for help. Meh, you don't care. But you certainly do care about the undead they bring. Kill them and make sure to kill the follow up group as well.
This basically triggers the "event" the first time.
Now just as someone has said, head for oink but leave him where he is (though he IS an invincible tank so maybe bring him if you're taking too much hits :P). Walk past the small building and head downwards. You'll see a lonely Hell Hound and 4 Ghoul Popups. Kill them as well and this starts the whole horde. Within seconds there will be dozens of undead swarming you from all sides.
Mow the lawn with your smiting and then head to the direction where the Warlocks came from. Ignore the bugged AI Creatures and kill a few more undead but make sure to let one patrol coming from the swamp pass unharmed. As soon as they reach the bugged AI, another huge mob of undead will spawn for you to kill.
And third, if you feel like "ignoring obstacles" you can easily walk through the Tree blocking the path by clicking an enemy behind it (or if you brought Oink, he will just run through it anways).
/edit:
The one near the first spawn of enemies. The one that now "blocks" the shortcut to the mission.
Ignore the boss and head a bit through the swamp. Woosh, undead horde number 3 spawns and runs right into your wide open smiting arms.
Ah well another dye location are the minotaurs in front of the ice tooth cavern. There is plenty of them and they love to drop dyes but i have yet to see a black dye drop coming from them. Silver is quite common with them though.
Enjoy.
Note: I haven't farmed this for a few months. I've only tried it twice with Triple Chop after the Factions Release so this information MIGHT be outdated by now.

krypt1200
This build isnt at ALL practical, i mean, drops are 13 gold a piece, and black dye is 10k, in the time it takes you to find you black dye, it may take a few hours, it may take a few days, better off vermin or troll farming. There is absoluteley no profit doing this run
Amity and Truth
Try it first, then diss it.
It was asked for Dye Drops, not for the uber money drops. Though the money accumulates for the sheer amount of quantity. Gates of Kryta is something to do to make your Farmcode cool down a bit and for the fun of it.
Besides, gold drops are around 30-50 and not 13 pieces. As i said, roughly 1 Plat per run which is quite fast to do. It's not the most profitable run but has (maybe had) high chances on dye drops.

This basically triggers the "event" the first time. i've been farming this area off an on with my Ele/Mes since the begining, and i have never bothered to kill the undead chasin the peasants. i've always ignored them and ran straight to the undead behind oink's house and get a good 20-30 undead popping up with 3 warlocks.
now, does kill the groups of undead following those peasant trigger even MORE undead behind the house?
try running straight to the undead behind the house without killing the undead behind the peasants and see if you see a difference in the number of undead there.

You get a big mob of Charr if you do Nolani and just go straight to the gate, open 'er up and let in the horde. As far as dyes go, they are random, they'll drop anywhere, you just need to be solo and kill a lot of critters.
You may be better off just farming the gold and buying it though, which I believe was a point already made.

Actually, yes. Been there, done that. The amount of undead does increase quite a bit. I'd say about 2x as much.

Btw, i usually get at least 1 or 2 dyes per run while doing Vermin farming. SOMETIMES(very rare), Shreader drops a Black. I got 2 from him already.
Young Hero
Grawls between Frontier Gate and Ruins Of Surmia
Discovered during last years Winter's Day event. While farming necklaces I had at least 15 Blacks drop.

Easy enough to just farm Kirins outside Maatu. 4 groups of kirins, the odd undergrowth, a few minutes a run, 800-1k of drops, the odd high priced item, the odd gold, etc. Guildy has had 1 Ruby 1 Sapphire 2 Black Dyes and plenty of golds from there. Not exactly high risk either.
pegasux
i get tons of dyes from harvest temple...and the rare gold drops now =(. got 2 black dyes on my first day there. the farm there as many of you know has been nerfed...golds don't drop every run as it used too. but you still make 800-1800 per run...2min runs.

Gates of Kryta does drop a lot of dye but its all random and if she is getting 2 black a day then more power to her.
But......
120k a day farming Gates of Kryta, wow
Unless she does it 23.5 hours a day out of the 24 hours I do not see it happening.

yeah 120k seems way way to high...if that were the case then bots would be everywhere there. unless she farms 12 hrs a day and gets say 10k an her...but 10k seems very high for that area.
Haggard
Well, she is insane and I don't think she actually requires real sleep. I'll ask her again tonight.
jrk247
^ I think your friend is exaggerating or she doesn't just farm Gates of Kryta, because if it is ~1k a run and 1-2 black dyes in a day that doesn't add up to 120k, unless she only gets like 2 hours of sleep in a day.
Black Dye is a random drop, but I have noticed that it seems to drop more in low level areas of the game. I have only had like 2 or 3 drop for me so far in GW. One was in pre and the others were in Fort Ranik and some other Ascalon mission. I think you would be better off just farming trolls or vermin to make 2-3k a run and just buy the dye when you make enough money.

If a run takes 5 minutes then she could plausibly do it in 10 hours, not counting the dyes. You also have to take the farm code into consideration, so I would say 11-12 hours without counting the dyes.
I also for some reason seem to get my fair share of black dyes in front of post-searing Ascalon, and outside of Serenity Temple.

this is not possible :]
the best place in gw for dyes is presear , in my experience the drop rates of all dyes are about twice as much in pre as they are in post.

Did the run twice last night (died horribly the other twice that I tried it - Not enough minions for MM to survive).
Anyway. Considering that I have only had 2 Black Dyes drop for me in the last year of playing, I got one on my second run.
So maybe there is something in all this.
Takes me 20 to 25 minutes to complete the circular run, and I make around 1.5k, plus a load of materials (avarage 150 bones per run, plus others).
On top of this, there was the dye (9.5k)
So I got about 13k, plus around 2k of materials. Not too bad for an hour's work.
Makes a nice change from either hydras or Ettins, anyway. This is much more difficult/interesting for a MM.

Iv gotten 6 Black dye drops so far,
2 in pre, (Grawl Invader and 1 from Ice Elementals)
1 outside Post Ascalon, (a Hulking Elemental) and
3 outside Droks Troll Farming. ( 1 was from the W boss and 2 were from normal trolls.)

Okay!
Since everybody THINKS that blacks drop more in pre, I have only one thing to say - You don't have to think! It's true. And there is a perfectly normal explanation! and here it is:
In pre-searing it's a LOW-lvl. area. That means that only "LOW-lvl." drops can drop. (You get me?) Dye is "low" so they can drop.
Other stuff like rare materials and rare items (Black dye is NOT "rare") CAN'T drop in pre.
So now we got fewer items that can drop. (Get the point?) That increases the drop rate (TYPO!)
Hope this will stop all of you from thinking "Maybe"
