When you don't meet the requirements of a collector, crafter, PvP, or green offhand, you get +3 energy. (With offhands dropped from enemies, you get +6 without meeting requirements.) Combined with the -5 energy, it gives you a net energy chanage of -2.

If you meet the requirement you'll get the +12, and the -5 netting +7. If you don't meet the requirement you still get +3 from it then lose the -5. it's only really used to prevent e-denial and for teh health and armor bonuses, if it has those, I can't remember for sure.

The Fans have +30 health and +5 armor. The CoA scroll, which many people used before the Fans, has +25 health and +5 armor.

how is that retarded? This is a game mechanic for any offhand you don't meet the req to.

If you use a shield, you get 2 more energy and 3 more armor, so it's kind of a trade off. I use a shield because I primarily play ele, though most monks I know use them too because the -2 energy is far worse than -energy, +3 armor.

Ideally, for a low energy set, you use a -5 sword/axe of fortitude/enchanting, and a shield (I reccomend Jacquei's aegis for most professions)
