Prima Guide sold out?
Knightsaber Sith
Officially canceled eh? Well that sucks for everyone that preordered; and odd that they canceled after everyone already had pics up for it and everything.

I get up this morning and check my order. It's still saying it's expected delivery date is the 3rd. The mail comes about noon, no guide (( no huge surprise)) so I check again to see if the order is being shipped. The order was simply canceled. No excuse. No reason. Just "Order canceled." I call up Walmart.com. Get some idiot in FL that tells me that the distributor didn't give WALMART their order. Yeah... like any distributor is going to dick a multi milliondollar buyer like walmart. Anyway the guy on the phone gets belligerent with me, all like "Did you hear the words that came out of my mouth????" and then told me he had no manager when I asked to speak with one. That he was alone.... in the walmart call center and had no emploee number or anything to identify him for complaint. I knew the guy was lying... Still not really part of my thing here. I hang up, call back and get the call center in Idaho or something. Much more helpful lady there. (( Who coiencidentally tells me the guy was lying, that they always have managers for stuff like that)) She tells me that Walmart got so many pre-orders that they sold out before they filled them all, and prima isn't shipping more. I Thank her and go looking online. ____ Everywhere____ seems to be sold out. I tried Amazon, I tried Barnes and Nobels. I tried Booksamillion. I Tried gamestop and EB. I tryed bookworld. I tried overstock. I Tried gamezone.... None of the places had any left. As I said above I ordered mine over a week ago so I never really thought about them selling out. Anyone out there having this problem or know a place where I can order the guide? |
Go to your local Gamestop or Gaming store during Nightfall launch and see if you can pickup a guide than?

Well Anet's saying they haven't released any news on any guide yet; and it seems Prima is saying they scuttled the project.
danyjr
That's well out of order. I can't believe they cancelled it. Although after the crappy Factions Guide, it was predictable.

I wouldn't worry about finding one once they do come out. Best Buy still has several copies of the Factions prima guide on their shelves. Of course, that's if it ever does see print. Lameness.

To all you people saying that the guide is a waste of money...
Some people actually really like guild wars and want to entend the game by reading about all the features, stats etc. while not at the computer.
Yes it can be outdated fast but so are encyclipideas (sp?)
Ever buy a book? Why should you when you can go to a library?
Yes a library has lots of books for basically free but people still buy books!
Just because you can get the information for basically free somewhere else doesn't automatically mean that the guide book is worthless.
There are lots of reasons to buy the book no one is forcing anyone to but for people to say that it's stupid to buy the book is out of order.
People posting earlier have given lots of valid reasons why they want the guide.

It's not the same thing. Books are generally not filled with information that can get outdated very quickly. Your analogy doesnt work.
The point isnt that just because you can get the information for free on sites then it means the guide is worthless, the point is that the guide is full of mistakes and gets outdated very quickly.

When I can safely take the wiki to the bathroom for a read and a "sit", or better still, safely read it (and it be written magazine style) while I take a long relaxing bath, will be the day I stop buying the guide.

I bought the Factions guide, and let me tell you something you already know.
First, there really aren't any strategies explained for all the missions, all it says is what you need to do, which is quite apparent when you enter the mission.
"Snipe enemies from far away". "Pull carefully". "Have a designated tank". Thats some advice right there. Heh.
The builds that they offered were well known, or readily available for new PvP chars. A lot of the skills have the wrong descriptions. A LOT of the skills are simply missing. Poor Backbreaker . Too many mistakes for my taste, and a very very very poor job on whoever made the guide. The Map was nice tho.

Remember the time of Factions release!
Is there any single strategy, for any single mission, which would no longer work today?
Is there any sound advice, for any character class, which would be totally bogus today? (PvE, not PvP! the Guide is 95% PvE after all)
Is there any map, collector, or merchant which was totally replaced or remodelled?
Does ANY part of Factions' game play now deviate in such way that old information is redundant.
Were the promises, written on page 3, paragraph 1, all kept up?
All the answers are a firm NO. So you can see that the main information for the guide was never in any danger of outdating! Whoever thinks that updates are the cause for MMO guides to fail, is simply lying into his own pocket.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was the simple question:
Did the guide provide hard hitting answers for those seeking its help. (Strategies in defeating certain mobs, location of elites, greens, collectors [no a list], armor, etc)
The answer is no, although the answers to all these questions remain unchanged since the release of Faction.
The shroud of silence shall fall upon all the other straws.
Bottom Line: If the Elite Fansites are worth a dime, they should stop bickering amongst themselves and write their own online guide. Even the larger elite sites are too small to create a guide on their own. (and the wiki’s target audience is not exactly new players seeking help)

The Prophecies guide, I found, was extremly useful. Yes it was outdated fast but at least it gave a rundown per mission about completion, bonuses, routes & maps as well as key NPC locations. Things like that dont change a whole lot in the game.
I was disgusted when I bought the factions guide. Why the hell did Anet get involved in that. They made it terrible, not Prima. There was almost no useful information in the Factions guide. IMO the idea behind a game guide is to basically give you a walkthrough on missions and whatnot. Not just give me some more lame background on a mission that is totally un-needed. Prima isnt perfect with their guides but at least they show you how to do things in thier guides.
Anet, stick to game design and let Prima write the guides.
my 2 cents...

Actually I liked both guides. I used those guides as a base for my own knowledge in the game... base because I added literally hundreds of notes and addendums to several areas in both guides. as well as adding maps that were excluded... This make the process of documenting your efforts in game a lot easier if you have a basic strategy guide to start off with.
I add stuff like... Good farming area, follow this path...
Best Farming spawn is when you see this this layout in UW...
More chests are normally on this path then the other.
Elite skill is here....
bla bla bla that kind of thing...
All great info not in a basic strat guide, but added to as I play the game. This save other players having to do all the mundane basic stuff for mapping and charting, and allows them to explore what they already know with more depth... And write it up in their strategy guide for their personal reference...
I like that myself. I will be extremely upset if there is no Strat guide from ANYONE. If it don't pop up I guess it will be up to the fans to make a printable version to give out for free. However like I said before if an ISBN has been issued its normally a foregone conclusion it will make it into print.

Get back to the Nightfalls guide issue, has anyone heard anything about the release of it if at all?

I did pre-order my guide and CE from Amazon and based on the release dates given at the time of my order, I set the delivery as one package. Reason behind this was the guide was set for release (when I ordered) for 10/3 and there was no point in getting the guide that early thus paying extra shipping. However, after reading this thread, I have changed my order to deliver as items become available because i don't want to risk my CE running late because of the guide (that may not ever get printed).
Amazon says they expect to ship the CE on 10/26 ... so I ordered with overnight delivery ... only time will tell if I get it on the 27th.

I'm now beginning to think the guide wasn't canceled; it'll probablly be coming out around the same time as the game. The main reason for my change in opinion is that I was poking around the Prima games forums and realized; their mods are retarded >_<. They don't even bother to do any investigating before posting. Look at this:
http://forums.primagames.com/showthr...?p=131#post131
Meanwhile the 360 HD-DVD drive ships Nov 7
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802558 .
And that was the same mod that claims the Nightfall guide was canceled. I say do not believe this blasphemer! If all the sites still have the guide available for preorder, it must be coming. And I hope that guy gets fired.

No offense but why spend the money buying the guide when you can go on Guru ro Guidlwiki to search for new builds, strategy, skills location, weapons and other stuffs for free?
I never ever brought strategy guide for any games.

Does Prima need authorization to do a guide?
I suspect so - if thats the case then I wouldn't be surprised if Anet pulled the plug on Prima.
Think about it .... the collectors edition now has the map and for once seems to actually give more stuff.
It's roughly the same price as the standard edition and a prima guide together.
Lots of people bought the prima guide for the poster map alone.
Methinks that Anet stopped Prima in an effort to boost sales of the CE of the game......
Conspiracies abound!
