What should I do??

personally I really like factions.
but I would definately never recommend it as a "first buy" to a new player.
And prophecies is gimped compared to the new chapters by not being able to get the 15 attribute point quests until much much later into the game...
Getting prophecies is nice for getting the old-school skillx and a feel for the game, etc... but I think Nightfall will outdo GW1 in most ways.
My recommendation for ppl getting into the game:
Nightfall, Factions, Original in order of what to get first.
Many ppl will disagree but the original just doesnt offer very much compared to the new chapters.
And yes, Factions is where you get Flesh Golem for necro... so ya its worth getting. (i could name a dozen more Factions-Only core-class skills off the top of my head too)
Edit- Plus Ritualists are awesome.

And you don't "need" flesh golem come nightfall since there will be another "nightfall only" Minion Master summon.

Factions is old news and I personaly hated it. Of all my chars I only finished the game with 1, because it did not have the repeatability that Prophesies has. I have a feeling that when Nightfall starts factions will be just a bad thought in the back of most peoples head. I still am not sure about Nightfall but I cant wait to try out the heros with all of the weapons and runes I have been saving. It seems like a breath of fresh air after months of hanging out in FoW and SF collecting equipment for my heros.

Hate might be too strong a word for me, and there was some challenges and fun to be had here and there, but for the most part - it wasn't that good.
Just a few people's opinions obviously in this thread so far, but I also only finished chp2 with just 1 of my characters. Even newly created chapter 2 characters headed to chapter 1 pretty much ASAP. It just gave some of my originals something to cap, and I'm a skill collector/cap fiend... but even then I didn't finish getting all the chp2 caps. Maybe I'll look to now, but quite frankly chp2 felt more like an obstacle than a game pretty quick. To me anyways.
And having nothing to do with difficulty - I like the tough stuff, heck I was an enchanter in EQ for 50+ levels (ouch). But up and down from the design and mechanics of what you had to go through and do. Pretty much yuck.
And I'm not glorifying chp1 - it was good but I was soo burnt out with it I dove head first right into chp2 on release and didnt look back. But I've been gone awhile now as it didn't take a long time to bore of chp2, and slowly coming back with Nightfall ramping up - not playing yet (outside PvP wkend and FPE for chp3), just on the boards.
Chp2 I was ravenous for new info and got the preorder. Chp3 finally with some Hero chatter and details I'm really getting into (the pvp weekend didn't do a ton for me either outside make some faction, yeah Dervish CoP after I adopted an 'if you can't beat em, join em' attitude where it was crystal clear > Dervs = victory). So this chapter either re-ignites my interest or it's likely the 360 will win the day [Culdcept Sage omg!

My suggestion: wait for Nightfall. If you like Nightfall, look to see if your game store offers a discount for buying Factions + Prophecies together. (My Gamestop does: Factions $49.99 + Prophecies for $29.99 when bought at the same time as Factions. They may even further reduce pricing after Nightfall has been out for a couple of months and you might be able to get P and F for ~$30 each.)
I have to agree with the others and say get Nightfall. Factions didn't seem to me to be a good beginning for new players. It has its problems, but I'd say it's worth getting once you're used to the game.
I'm currently trying to get another friend into Guild Wars, and I was torn as to whether I should suggest Nightfall or Prophecies as a starting point, but it looks like Nightfall is edging out the original based on what I've seen.

for new players, Factions is not a good start
for people that already own Prophecies, Factions has
- FASTEST levelling for new characters (of all 3 chapters)
- skills for all classes exclusive to the chapter
- professions exclusive to the chapter
- fun maps that incorporate both PVP and PVE (Fort Aspenwood)
