Hey!
I have 2 suggestions for features that would enhance game play but I would like to preface my suggestions with comments…
First, I had never invested in an MMO prior to Guild Wars. The monthly subscription fees and promise of a life consuming experience just didn’t interest me. I’ve been a hard core gamer for 20 years (yes I’m old) but I have to budget my game time these days and it seemed like keeping up with people who spend ALL their time online would be impossible. That is, until Guild Wars. Also, I hated the in game raids that I had read about. I didn’t want to be attacked by losers with nothing better to do but pretend they were gangsters in a virtual world. Again, you solved that problem.
I fell in love with Guild Wars right away and played way too much (according to my budget)
Factions less then overwhelmed me. I’ve enjoyed the differences and enhancements but it didn’t raise the bar enough to get those juices flowing. However, I participated in the Nightfall preview and let me say… Holy Crap!!!
Nightfall is amazing! Still familiar but the improvements and the different play styles, the characters, the heroes, the unit control, the visual style… WOW!
Here are my suggestions:
1) I love the idea of Heroes. They are great and I see how they’re woven into the story line. However, when I first saw them I kind of hoped I could access my other characters. You should spend some time and see if it’s technically possible to implement a persons own alternate characters as heroes in your game. If I could equip, with my own collected items and skills, a character that I have played and will play – essentially making parties from my own character library, that would be really cool. It doesn’t eliminate the need for the NPC Heroes but it would be a great thing to command my own guys too.
2) Skill sets – I love weapon sets. Being able to switch weapons at the press of a button is great. Skills should work like that too. I appreciate you wanted to limit the available skills to 8 while in a private instance of the game but when in town setting up your “build” to go fight why not let us save 4 different skill sets (or builds) and easily switch between. It’s a fact that each character class has different skill sets to accomplish different tasks. Setting them up manually each time is tedious and completely unnecessary.
Regards!
2 ways to improve the Guild Wars experience!

Yeah I have wanted the "Alternate Characters as Heroes" ever since I first heard the Heroes announcement.
As for the build switch, that has already been announced as being implemented. They just didn't have it turned on for the preview event.

How would the "alternates" work when they could be maxed out level 20's while you're level 2? That seems a bit unbalanced, the hero could solo while you just hang back and get power leveled.
I think the heroes access to elites right from the start needs to be addressed, perhaps they learn skills as they gain levels, so each new level brings X number of new skills?

Anyway I love the idea of heroes and anything to improve that would be a good thing in my opinion.

Using your own characters as heroes has already been suggested and will likely never happen. Skillsets are already confirmed with Nightfall.

I hear your points and I have to say... I'd see your points more clearly if you'd shave your heads!
Seriously, I think only allowing your own characters to join once you've reached lvl 20 would be a fine comprimise. I'm not trying to "Power level" or bypass anything... I just think it would be cool.
And, regardless of previous suggestions... the more AreaNet hears users/customers asking for something the more wieght they'll place on that idea.
Make it so!

The feature is expected to work fully when the game is released.

It would certainly be great fun to be able to adventure alongside one's other characters, once one had ascended, so I'd be in favour of that, for sure. It would be a nice incentive to make one's characters a balanced team.
Saving skillbars will be very useful, especially for the poor necromancer who has to switch from MM to Order at the last minute before the team sets out. It would be useful if you changed your attribute point allocation automatically too, though swapping scar and weapon could be left to do manually, after all you can at least do such changes after you've gone through the portal.

#1 is a bad idea, security issues and whatnot which relates to the quick character switching people are trying to suggest.
