Well, there are so many things it could be.
The first thing I suggest you do is check your system. Open the case, and look at the motherboard. There should be several capacitors on the motherboard (they are the round things that look like little cans).
Look to see if any of them are swollen. If any are swollen or leaking, that means your motherboard is bad. That frequently shows up as causing systems to crash or reboot when put under stress (like loading or running a program).
Also check for cooling. Excess heat can also cause that. An underpowered power supply can also cause that. Make sure that your power supply is at least 350 watts minimum (this is normally printed on the side of the power supply).
Because you said it crashes the computer, I am thinking this may be more of a computer issue then a GW issue. Normally game crashes on Windows 2000 or XP do not cause the entire computer to crash.

Yeah, for any crash or shutdown problem, here are the general steps to solving it:
1) Close the program and reopen it. If this doesn't work...
2) Restart your computer. If this doesn't work...
3) Reinstall the program. If this doesn't work...
4) Install the program to a different location and see if it works. If it does, it's a problem somewhere on your computer or network. If it doesn't, it's a problem with the program itself.
5) Assuming 4 revealed that it was a computer problem, check for overheating issues. Most newer CPUs and graphics cards come with built-in temperature sensors and allow you to check the temperature somewhere. Generally, anything below 75 degrees Celsius, is safe, with 75-100 being runnable. Anything higher than 100 is dangerous.
6) If it's not an overheating problem, check to make sure that all the parts of the computer are seated correctly. Reseat the RAM, check connections, etc.
7) If all else fails, reinstall your operating system. The problem could've been caused by a problem with an OS file, and reinstalling would hopefully fix the file.
8) If that doesn't work, call Geek Squad or Geeks on Call.
