I love that game. Everyone who hasn't played that hasn't lived.

Guild Wars Prophecies (the first one) has only 1 melee class - a Warrior. Warriors function much like fighters do in BG. They have high amounts of armor, use swords, axes, or hammers (keep in mind that in GW all swords and axes are 1 handed and all hammers are 2 handed), are capable of doing and taking large amounts of damage, and are essential to most teams.
Guild Wars Factions (the second one) brings another melee class to players - the Assassin. The Assassin is like a Thief/Mage in BG. They use daggers to cause large amounts of damage to a single target, and when they are dead (the target), the Assassin runs from the melee and finds another target. They also have degenerative hexes and the ability to 'shadow step', which means they can teleport to other people/places. Keep in mind that Factions focuses on PvP a bit more than the other games do.
Guild Wars Nightfall (the third one) has a Dervish as the melee class. They have crappy armor but use enchantments to keep themselves alive. Their scythes can attack multiple foes at once and do large amounts of damage. Nightfall isn't out yet so I don't know much else. It's supposed to be very PvE based so you should like this one.
Overall, I think a Warrior/Ranger is for you. When a character is made they only have 1 profession, and as you go along there are quests that let you pick a second. It is definitely NOT like dual-classing in BG. There is no downside to taking a secondary proffesion.
The Warrior primary brings higher armor than the ranger and is better suited to melee than a Ranger/Warrior would (each proffesion has their own armor sets and they all have different armor levels and bonuses. You cannot use the armor of your secondary proffesion). The Ranger secondary is good for support, whether you use it for a pet (which levels alongside you and will not turn against you no matter what), or 'Wilderness Survival', which helps you survive in the wilderness (you probably guessed that).

Thats no problem. With the level cap at 20 (its not that high, and everyone who wants it raised is just a WoW fan trying to make GW exactly like it) you don't feel pressured to have to grind 24/7. Also, you don't need 'uber leet' weapons or armor to finish the game. You can go through the whole game without having to even think about farming.

Definately. I'd start with Prophecies, as it has a very good introduction for new players and does not rush you into everything. Factions is very much a PvP thing and for PvE lovers it only offers half the missions Prophecies does. I'd skip it and go for Nightfall.
