The pets are all balanced and other than the type of physical damage they do (slashing, etc) really are not any different from each other. The exception is the bear whose special attack just slows down the attack rate without any benefit.
Adding a ranged pet (porcupine that flings spines? scorpion that shoots stingers? spitting snake?) would throw off that balance and so would not be a good thing.
Besides that, some of the pet attacks wouldn't make sense (poison bite when it is flinging a thorn?) and adding ranged attacks wouldn't work with the melee-based pets.

If there were another rangerish/beastmasterish profession that had ranged pets then it wouldn't be an issue as that profession would need to be balanced with the existing professions.
