Hate to break it to you, but you've got a bad memory chip somewhere in your RAM. I had that problem all the freaking time with D2 until I RMA'ed my RAM and got a new stick for the faulty one.

I went to the the uninstaller, told it to re-install, it finally launched without erroring, which was great (worried about missing another event) I finished with the -image command got both installs running

did a few runs and no errors as of yet, was only on for maybe an hour, /pray it keeps working... I dont think ill be defragin again for awhile, everytime I do something like this happens...

if it does happen again tho ill be sure to buy new ram... thanks for the insight.

Mine ONLY did it on the Catacombs waypoint. Nowhere else in D2, nowhere else in any other games or performing any other functions. But it did it without fault, without fail every single time I hit Catacombs waypoint. I'm trying to tell that although you may otherwise be running fine, be aware that the underlying cause of your problem is likely still there. You may want to download and run the memtest that is available and find out exactly where the problem is. (Memtest is searchable on Google.)

Me too thinks that there is a problem with a RAM module. If so, it probably will be back...

But as you are able to run the game now, the problem may be heat or dust-related... maybe time to check your pc to see if everything is clean, properly connected and if the vents are still working properly??

Is there not programs that can flag the faulty ram-bit(s) so that they are no longer used? (As with harddrives)

Jello, I have no idea. I have lifetime warranty RAM. I just RMA it.

Well, I had no idea, but I asked my brother-in-law. He said no. Unfortunately, you'll have to replace the RAM .

It can also be caused by a bad sector on your hard drive. Especially if it is a sector that is being used by Virtual RAM.

Try doing a drive check and a defrag. If you find any bad sectors on the hard drive, it is pretty much time for a new drive. Also listen to it in operation. If it makes any "clicking" noises, or if you hear the speed reving up and down during operation, that can also be a sign of impending failure.
