Unwieldy size of Gw.dat creates defrag problems
Thomas Kempis
I am not sure what can be done about this, or if this is where this suggestion goes, but my gw.dat file is ~2.5 Gb now. After Nightfall comes out, it will no doubt become even larger. Every time a new build is downloaded or new area visited, it becomes slightly larger - and fragmented. To defrag the file, the whole 2.5 Gb must be moved to the inside of the drive and then written as one piece back in place on the outside tracks. This is time consuming and creates unnecesary wear on the drive. Is there some way the info could be broken down into smaller files that could be more easily managed? (by the developers, of course) Thanks in advance for any advice or opinions.

I'm also experiencing performance problems with this.

No, there is no way to break it down. The .dat file has always been a single large data file.
Sorry, but no way around it. You'll have to keep defragging I guess.

That sticky at the top of this forum really helped me with that file. I almost have no lag thanks to it.
