What's the big deal? Why does anyone care about what color the weapon is? I would gladly buy a blue weapon over a gold weapon with the same stats.

Golds have a greater range fo skins than collector/crafter items and greens dont need to be modded, so you have a choice of nicer skin or free mods. collector/crafter items have a standard skin and still need to be modded.

Maybe people would start using blue weapons too if they ever dropped with maximum stats/mods 
But the weapon's color shows it's rarity, and more often than not the quality of it's mods too. Perhaps it makes people feel warm and fuzzy inside to carry around the rarer versions of the weapons even if the purple one's can drop in maximum damage variety and can be modded with maximum mods.

gold is a cooler color? i do like the green but just doesnt have stats i want..oo and 15 damage mod is cooler than 14 because the number 14 is ugly

Pink <gay than purple? I agree with the OP though, if they have the same stats, I dont care what it looks like. Funtionality > appearance.

Only a few modifiers and upgrades can be max on purples:
- of Defense
- Armor +5 (while Health is above 50%/while enchanted/vs physical attacks/vs elemental attacks)
- Received physical damage -2 (while in a Stance/while enchanted/while Hexed)
