it is important to note that this is not just something to complain about.
it is not about the fact that we can download the client. the point is that we as consumers should not have to do this. we should not have to work around a product that we paid for with our hard earned money. we as consumers have rights that large coorporations are taking advantage of. in a world that has several different types of media that a product can be released on, the maufacturer needs to cater to the needs of its consumers. it is unfortunate that these corporations dont listen and are only concerned with money. the only way to make them change their ways is to be vocal about our concerns. to demand equal treatment for all consumers. not just the ones with DVD drives. many will find my views rigid and maybe a bit silly. but the fact remains...if you let corporations take just a little of your rights away, they will take all of them away. |
| JS: Let me give you an anecdote of the technological aspect of the game that people don’t really realize. You know, we ship Factions on the 28th (Today), but what people don’t realize is that every Guild Wars gamer right now has factions sitting on their hard drive. We have this streaming technology that we’ve build into the game from day one that allows us to quickly add content to the game and fix unbalance issues. We also use it to drive these big global events that we have – five or six times a year, we have either worldwide open events or beta preview events, things like that. People are able to jump in, see the new content, and play 72 hours over the weekend, but they don’t ever have to download a huge client. Gamers are so used to it now that they don’t question how it works, well the way it works is that 3 weeks or sometimes a month before we start an event, we start using idle bandwidth as they play Guild Wars to stream down the assets for the event to their computer so that when the event starts, almost everybody already has it on their hard drive. |
