When I turn on GW I occasionally get a Lightning bolt symbol with a number in MBs behind it. WTF does this mean??

They are stealing your megabits!!11!

More seriously: you are downloading Nightfall (& halloween content), the bolt is download icon & mb is how much has been downloaded in that session. So nothing to worry about really, its the "streaming technology" at work.

I advise you to let it run and then play the game to avoid things that are not loaded and lag.

You can also download everything that is available at one time with the command line "-image" option - something to do overnight.
