Breaking out Koss
Cygnus_Zero
How do I break out Koss in The Great Escape mission?
Arkantos
The northern gate should open. If it doesn't, you have to rezone.

I've tried it 3 times, never opened
ANet clearly hates me

Cygnus_Zero
I finally rezoned, went back, and it wouldnt open again. I wanted around for a while and then it opened.

after some minutes on my third try, the gates opened O_o ...
EroChrono
Same here, tried 3 times, went back and forth but gates remain closed
-edit-
Finally worked, no clue how i triggered it though... was afk for 15 minutes and still didnt open, i think the best thing to do is walk back and forth from the northern gate, just outside aggro range and to it, etc

It worked on my first try, but not immediately. You need to move back and forth and just be patient. Kinda annoying... needs to be fixed.

I was having trouble too, but we killed all of the Kournan groups around the fort and then the gate opened.
Basically, kill everything

I think I have a theory about it. I tried this around 5-6 times and every time the commander actaully talked when I killed the scout groups.
The sucessful run, he only said something at the end. What I did different want this time I lured all the scouts AWAY from the gates. I had assumed that this was a sneakyesk quest.
I followed the route directly and tried to avoid as many of the enemies as I could on the way.

There seemed to be no pattern to the doors opening.
My party killed everyone and wandered around all over the map looking for an alternate route.
On about the third or fourth approach to the doors they opened, but we hadn't done anything different.
At least we did it first time, even if it did take forever. I'd have hated to rezone and start that again.

I don't believe the "kill everything" claim. I have literally killed everything and the doors ain't opening.

-shrug- By killing everything, my party probably waited long enough for the gates to open.
It seems like the gates open at random =/

Gate doesn't open until you kill the patrols around it on both sides
thelessa
The same happened to me too. We rezoned and started the quest again and followed the arrow and killed in the order the quest told us to. That seemed to do the trick, for us at least

No you dont have to kill every group. But if you get too close to the fort you will be spotted, you will fail and they wont open. Just follow your markers exactly. Kill the southern group first and then move away from the fort (i.e do not move accross the bridge). Then go back and around to the northern group. Then you can approach the fort and they should open.

I have done it a few times now (successfully) and every time we got a dialogue when we killed certain kournan patrols. I'm pretty sure thats the key, killing the 2 or 3 patrols around where the icon tells you to go, but then also standing somewhere that triggers the Captain to spout off his little speech. Just a theory, though...

I had trouble with this before. I read on wiki that if you approach from and clear out the north first, the gate will open. I've done this several times and each time the gate has opened for me using this method. After you clear out everything from the north - go around and take out the group(s) at the other gate, and you'll get in.
ramma77
i did what the quest said to do.
Dazzler
I wondered the area last night mowing everything down. I killed the patrols form the north and worked my way south. Before killing the last patrol I even went and knocked on the gates wondering how to get in (not familiar with the quest) then went and killed the last patrol and the commander said something and the gates opened.

I have tried to kill both entrances first (started as the quest stated (west - north) , on later characters moved to the north gate first).
This did not make a difference.
You kill three groups (two north, one west) and you are in.
Btw, I like those priest running towards me, far ahead of the mob

I found that exactly following the markers made the quest work as it should. It was when we took some other groups closer to the fort that the gates wouldn't open.
Div
Yeah, I just followed the markers for the quest and no problems with two characters through that quest...

I took the advice from someone on this board and attacked the northern groups first, then the wester groups, and it worked on both my toons on my first tries, 2/2. Go figure.
I'd definitely be careful and not get too close to the fort, particularly on that western side.

When I attack them in the order my quest log stars them I have no trouble, when I attack them in any other order I have to go back and correct it, making sure I take out the ones I skipped, to get in.
I also recommend doing the first Command Post quest first, to unlock the profession changer. You want your primary or secondary profession to be ranger on this quest in order to capture the elite skill at the end (Barrage), unless you already have it from a previous chapter.

Follow the arrows/stars and kill each mob in turn and it should open like clockwork. It has on my most recent chars through that area anyway.
The first time I did it I was wandering/killing and I had to wait and back away for it to open but all recent times I've just followed the pointers and it opens before I can even see the gate.
