So...locked gates in Nightfall?

My biggest issue with Factions was that I was forced to play through the entire story with EVERY character, if I wanted all my characters to have access to the entire map.

Is it the same in Nightfall, or can you get ferried through the game (like in Prophecies) if you want to?

PLEASE NOTE: Dont turn this into a debate on whether ferries are bad or good, because I dont really care. I just want to know if its possible in Nightfall like it was in Prophecies.

You can run to places...but to get to certain places or carry on the story you basically have to travel from point A to point B with an NPC.

But if you only want to get there for the things there not to carry on with the game, then its OK.

So long as you have the right hero in the group, you can access the town, as far as i can tell.

However, to do most of the missions, you need to have finished a primary quest.

There are *some* locked gates. But, not many... You cannot however explore the entire map without following the story line. Many missions you cannot get past without completion (there were a few of those in tyria as well). But, there is a lot to explore by not following the main quest line. There won't be any rushing through the game (like a droks run) in NF.

Yeah the trick with the missions is many towns dont actually become mission towns until you complete another objective. It's pretty clear ANET does not like running or farming. They've been beating that into our heads since day one. And I actually think they go too far sometimes. It's at the point now where just to get rid of solo farming, they ruin other aspects of the game just to accomplish that one goal. I'm convinced they have people just sitting around a conference table just coming up with ideas to get rid of running and farming. It's really pretty ridiculous that they think those 2 things will run guild wars into the ground.

What I dont understand is how do they expect us to make money? If they dont like farming, why put armor in this game that costs a million gold? I'm pretty sure you will never make that kind of money randomly finding items and gold from quest rewards. It requires you to either farm, or ebay gold. They are forcing people into one of those 2 situations, when they think they are trying to stop it. Their whole effort to do away with farming is contradictive of some of the items they put in the game. I don't get it and never will. Noone can ever convince me that ruining running and farming is a good idea.

for the locked gates thing, its only for capital citys(im not sure only on 7th mission) but you cant do a mission unless you have completed the quests and missions before that

The point is you can get your 1.5k armor without farming/ebaying easily, and the rest is just "Bonus" stuff. You don't really 'need' FoW or any of the 15k armors to do anything in game, be it PvP or PvE.

Those armor are just there to give you an incentive to keep earning money - otherwise you'd just get your 1.5k and be like, "Ok...um...what do I do with all this money now?"

If you just farm/ebay up the gold to buy every rare and expensive item immediately - um...now, what're you going to do with all your money now?

It's an issue of 'replay value'. Basically you're NOT supposed to be able to buy the more expensive armors. Not on any reasonable timeframe, anyway. They're a high-end, end-game type goal.

Farming and whatnot nerfs that for Anet. And I'm sure, just like us players, Anet hates to get nerfed. That's why they hate farming.

Also, getting run through the game means you skip all the content, play the game on turbo mode and, usually, burn out on the game 10x faster. So, in efforts to keep players in game longer, and therefore, more likely to purchase more character slots, the next expansion, etc, ANet nerfs running.

Get it?

It aint.. besides :
To get off the starters island you must do a real shitload of quests
as in : 90% of the quests you get. Don't worry when you enter a town the first time it seems like they nearly all get green marks above theyre heads..

Btw : I started to play guildwars for the freedom it gave (yet not as much as wow but at least free)
I was doubting wether to buy or not.. but nightfall will be the last chapter. As the feeling of freedom is totaly lost this way, it became a linear game. En when it comes to linear games I have other preferences.

I'm disappointed that they have any locked gates at all in Nightfall. Didn't ANet get the point that most people hate them?

At least the rest of the game seems well done.

Some of the areas which are locked... well, there are ways in which you can go around them, it just takes a little longer.

Basically yes, unless you have the quest OR you have a high enough sunspear or lightbringer rank. SO yea. there is still a block here or there is that is what you are looking for. You do have to play the game to progress.

Sorry, running is still basically obsolete, as is oh so many other ludicrous ventures...

I have run to so many places but it still seems that you find a locked gate here or there for storyline purposes. However I am not sure you can "skip" ahead like you could before, I think you need to complete at least most of the missions even if you can get to them via running.

Overall tho for the adventurer in me I think its pretty great. Of course I might object once I had to mission/quest my 6th char through >_<

The thing is, there are almost no locked gates in Nightfall. It isn't like Factions where you couldn't even get to Minister Cho's Estate. I'd say its more like Tyria. You have to complete Sanctum Clay to get to the desert. You have to do THK to get to the RoF. I'm suprised people aren't whining about that being "OMG I can't go everywhere right away."

My Dervish is pretty much done with most of the storyline missions, but my Elementalist just finished "A Hero Will Lead Them." I've ran my elementalist to a couple places available on the map, but i've been unable to find a way to get to Moddok's Crevice. I'm fine with the idea of not being able to access the missions without having the previous primary quest finished, but does not having done the quests stop me from even getting to some places?
I have 8 characters and having to do all the missions and quests just to get to certain places would suck....
Missions can be fun the first couple times, 8 times into it I think it would be worse than work...
Any ideas? Is Moddok's Crevice locked or am i missing something here?

none as inhibiting as factions, thank goodness anet learned their lesson in that regard, heh.

woot for nightfall exploration -- ive taken my time (im a casual gamer, though, not like "hardcore i play 8 hours a day instead of working!" heh) exploring and enjoying the scenery and so and and so forth, between missions and during quests and shiz. aside from not being able to get into blacktide den (was surprised but i still had plenty to do so no big loss ) i haven't come across any horrible restrictions yet!
