Hero Hype?
Riceboi
Hello Everyone
I've been playing Guild Wars since Prophecies, so I'm not new. Hero's are a pretty new and unique concept to Guild Wars. I think Anet did a good job putting them in the game because it gives the game an extra someting.
In my opinion though I could care less about hero's. I mean yeah it's cool, but I would still think this game was awesome without them. It seems like most people are going crazy over heros. Of course I could change my mind later. So what does everyone else think? Are Hero's all hype?
See you in game sometime!

Truly, I don't like them very much. I was in a group yesterday, and everyone was insisting we make half the group heroes. Big mistake. heroes to me are just henchmen with added controls.

In my experience the heros are quite smart.... alot smarter than the average PuG and always listen. GG pugs.
Most groups I've had success with are 2-3 players and the rest beefed heros. If your smart enough with the game's mechanics you can easily make you heros into gods.

I beat the Nightfall campaign with heros, and went and mopped up Unwaking Waters and Raisu Palace and Shiro with them. Used correctly they're quite useful, they certainly help with the lack of players in some missions. Assassins will actually be able to get through Factions without guild help using heros...

hear hear.
Hell, I even take henches and wont go into a random pug.
To the OP, heros are just amazing, just the fact that you can customize their skills makes all the difference.
I had Olias do MM, masters of whisper is SS, and one of the eles is nuking.
Mobs cannot last a chance with all this damage.

Heroes are no better than henchmen, the flagging system would have sufficed - which thankfully works on henchmen anyway. Their only use is when you need a highly specialised skill that you can't be bothered to take yourself, e.g. removing all conditions at abaddon.
At a lot of places they are actually a burden, because you are required to take them on some missions and if you're like me, they will still be lvl10 or less. I did use koss because I liked the cut of his jib, and devona sucks most of the time, hands up who thought they only gave us 1 hammer warrior to force us to use koss...

If that is what you think heros are best for then you not using them right.
For me, having a Necro MM hero is a dream come true. The MM build works great with my Barrage Ranger build.
Being able to command them, set their attack modes (To prevent Healers for fighting for example) and being able to set the skills makes them more then just henchmen.
People who think heros are just plain old henchmen aren't using them to their fullist.

Heros are amazing, given the right skills. My guild leader and I took 6 heros into Sorrow's Furnace, and proceeded to annihilate everything. Olias(MM) and Zenmai(A/R Crit Barrager)were the highest level, at 15, the rest, including our monks, were ~12-13, and one level 8. Henchies don't compare, not at all.
Zenmai died once, and was ressed immediately by Res Sig. No other deaths occurred.

they are amazing. I just love how you can set them up.
For example the water pump mission. I got owned by the boss at the end, so I go back to town, change a hero into an interrupter and fly through the mission.
Gates of Desolation mission. I couldn't kill a boss because he kept ressing his healer with some signet. So I set a hero up to take frozen soil with him, and it's easy as pie. Normally you do that on your own character, but that's a waste of secondary and skill slot as a monk, while it isn't really a problem for heroes. Awesome, really.

Heroes are excellent for PvE. In fact, i think most it actually promotes less cooperative gameplay. At least parties consisting of smaller numbers of real life players.
Heroes have the potential to be very deep tactically. I already predict that future farming build will consist of one real player and a Hero.
Simple tips to get you started ---
1. Put FLAIL, not Frenzy or Tigers Fury or Flurry on Koss.
2. Don't equip more than skill that cause exhaustion. And make sure you manage it.
3. On offensive characters, like Koss, it is better if you load them with offensive skills. No defensive skill are necessary if you have capable monks.

They are pretty cool... apart from the centaur dude.. zhed i think his name is.. constantly thinks he's a tank and steams into the enemy unless you tell him not to.
And the master of whispers has a tendency to go back to someone who has died even if you dont tell him to, whilst ignoring the marker i place on the map.
Few bugs to iron out but then it will be awesome.

Heroes are what you make of them. In my mind my character just became 4 times as powerful, and I feel like I'm level 80

This has been said but it merits saying again. Henchmen beat PUG's hands down. They always listen, they never rage quit, they always bring the right skills and they don't pull a Leroy or lag out.

Also another thing I don't like is that players that have a high level hero (or have all the heros) have an advantage over a player that doesn't want or care to use heros. By advantage I mean having an easier time through the game or perhaps better farming opportunities.
I'm not sure how many of you played or play Warcraft 3 (awesome game) but I didn't like the hero part. How you had to level your hero or else you are at a pretty big disadvantage against your enemy. Warcraft 3 players know what I mean, it kind of feels like the part of Warcraft 3 I didn't like.

I haven't played through Nightfall that much, but by and large I do like the hero concept.
One thing that I don't understand is whether or not you have to level heroes for each of your regular characters. Is this how it works?

So far I like the heroes quite a bit. My only issues are when I got my Canthan Mesmer into Elona, I got several heroes unlocked and basically got the Consulate Docks mission.. Fine. But You HAVE to have Dunkoro to take the mission and he's only lvl 6 and poor Koss was only lvl 2. So basically I've had to tool around the training isle to make the lower level heroes useful for the higher level part of the game.
I did make the mistake of leaving Healing Breeze in my first monk heroes skillset and he spammed it til he had NO energy and about got us all killed.. But I remedied that and he's much better although the monks seem to have a hard tiem remembering to heal themselves as well as the rest of the party.
I love having my necro hero running MM.. Makes life easier and my own necro can run SS or blood at the same time and of course Acolyte Jin seems to just LOVE Barrage as well as Apply poison and Chiking Gas..
Can't wait to go around Cantha and Tyria with these guys.

Having a minion master hero turns the entire game into ezmode.

I do quite like my heroes, though I do also feel that it is causing people not to form human parties. I have only seen about two people form human parties since I started! However, I only just reached the mainland, so I'm not sure if this trend continues.

I love being able to work with Heroes, it gives me options. I love taking them with me, but I don't have to. There's options.
Me, most of my GW time is in spurts between various things going on, so sometimes I don't want to commit to finishing a whole mission with other players, just in case I have to run off and stop playing. Heroes give me a better way to do that, so I don't end up screwing up a group because I leave. They also don't yell or freak out or complain, and they never insist on skipping cutscenes.
I don't mind PUGs one bit, as I've had decent luck with PUGs, but I think Heroes are a great option.
My one worry is the same one that many probably have - that there won't be enough people to form human teams. Alternately, though, now when there's those situations, two people could team up with 3 heroes each for a mission, and thus not have to sit around spamming "LFG" for an hour.

I just wish i could bind their skills slots to alt, ctrl, and shift combinations. Other than that, i find the hero behavior and skill usage selection far superior than the old style henchmen. My only complaint would be how sparingly Koss decides to use energy based attacks like triple chop if other energy based skills are on his bar.
desolatorman
technically i think heroes are only good for those time when ur like "GLF one monk" and there are no monks there. Then A hero would be useful, because someone may already have a skill set for an at least decent healer.
eloc_jcg
I like the fact that you can level them up and change around their skills. I now have the ability to bring an MM instead of some blood/cultist henchy.

Any player can have high level heros, they just need to spend some time on them. My heros are all level 20 because i grinded out their levels. It really wasn't difficult, I was killing all creatures level 20 and above when Koss was level 2. He leveled extremely quickly, it is not a difficult task, so really I see no reason why every player can't have high level heros.

I am absolutely amazed by the quality of the AI on the Heros. People say they are just skill pack horses. But that's nonsense. If you take the time to plan the build, the Heros execute it quite effectively. I get the feeling the programs took some PvP data and built in some real people smarts into the behavioral algorithms.
The regular henchmen aren't to shabby either...most have decent build set ups and seem a bit easier to disengage from combat.
This system is great because truthfully you're probably gonna have 1-3 friends, now you can team with them and still have full groups.

Human parties get you killed.
You can guarantee that someone is gonna lure all those monsters over there that you DONT want luring.
Or fail to bring a res, or maybe they are eating tea whilst you do the mission for them.
They hardly ever listen, and are too unpredictable (running off to uncover the maps or open chests)
They talk too much, or maybe just lose interest and leave (GRRR) or get the dreaded 007 (NOOO).
HEROES FTW I SAY
The only problem is that you can only take 3 of em, i SOOO WISH we could take 8 so i would'nt have to use those dumb henchies.

I am having trouble setting up their skill bars. Since I have never played a monk I have no clue as to what a "good" healing skill bar consists of. Ditto for having a Protection monk. Any threads about what are good set-ups for each Hero's skills?
Also, Do you all leave your Hero as one Primary profession or are you giving them secodaries as well?
Its just me and my liking games to be simple, but I can see myself getting mired down in all the choices I need to make in my Hero's skills, armor, order, and so on.
