More so because I think they need more pets in Nightfall anyway.
So far (at70% exploration) ive only seen a warthog, flamingo (which ive charmed on hero), a rat (which also charmed on other hero), and a Lion.
I've seen an Elder Crocodile which was tamed by a creature. But im yet to find one to tame myself.
When you do find pets, their very few and far between. Other then the hords of flamingo on the training island and the pairs of rats you get.

I would like a little hippo pet, too, but alas, they are not going to come. I did a bit of tag-team checking on this. Started with Danial (Art Director) moved to Katy (artist), Matt (animator), John (programmer) and finally James (lead designer). James tells me that the hippo was removed sometime close to release, and he doesn't feel that it is likely that it will return, at least not as a tameable pet. (The removal was about download and technology concerns, not issues with using an endangered species or concerns about cultural issues.)
I'm really sorry to share that the hippo won't be in the game. I guess when Froggie mentioned having seen a hippo, he was recalling a time before release, cause he sees a lot coming and going in his multiple homes. Or maybe he's been somewhere we've not been, and seen an ambient creature we've not spotted??
(Oh and you guys who suggested maybe a new pet could be added later? I'm with you on that, and dropped a subtle hint about that yesterday.

Pure speculation, but maybe they just couldn't get the data files for the Hippo the way they wanted them and still have it look/sound/move/act as they wanted? Honestly, no clue, but maybe they had some issues with the data size? Compression? Compatability with things they added/changed after the NPE?
That would be my guess as to what Gaile means. Mind you, I'm no expert on this stuff, just speculation.
As for people saying it was because of hippos being endangered, arn't other animals still in GW endangered/protected? Tigers, white tigers, panthers (aka Melandru's Stalker)?
