can anyone explain heros to me?

read the thread and there is nothing really on what a hero does or how you get them. getting nightfall this weekend and want to know what i would potentially be getting into with them. any input would be much appreciated. thanks.

Play through nightfall, youll unlock them. You give them skills like you would give yourself, and you control em in battle, or just letm go free.
