An opinion about privacy.......
If you think all your phone calls, e-mails, PM's and such are private and rely on them to be private, then I suggest alternate forms of communication with others. Yes, by the rules, companies say their info is private, but as the goverment has shown time and time again, communications in whatever form can and will be monitored at their discretion (right or wrong).
Now, that being said, if Anet monitors my chats or the government monitors my phone calls/e-mails, that's fine. Heck, most of the time I have a private conversation in my office, and the rumours get around in about 20 minutes or so anyway.
Point of this, I support Anet monitoring the chats and PMs. I can't tell you how many times I dropped into Ascalon and heard a bunch of idiots making racial and religious slurs at others- even I got called one just for haggling a price with someone. I have not seen that type of vugarity in a while and I beleive it is due to Anet's efforts and the efforts of the 99% of us who are respectful players.

Anet's censoring of in-game chat and offensive names does not impinge on your first amendment rights.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
the key words there are "Congress shall make no law". Anet is not congress. you signed a legal agreement with Anet, giving them the authority to monitor and censor as they see fit. you waived your rights when you signed the EULA. if it bothers you that much you can either try to renegotiate the terms of your agreement with Anet, or don't play. you can't really complain about what Anet is doing. after all, technically you asked for it by signing the EULA.
i personally don't like government censorship, but in the real world you will always be in situations that will require some type of code of conduct. when you get a job you're required to behave in a certain way. if you're in school you're required to behave in a certain way. people enter into agreements requiring some type of censorship all the time. it's just part of life.
and i really feel that i should put this link here:

so many times when i see people talking about their constitutional rights i wonder when was the last time they actually bothered to read it and see what it actually says, as opposed to what they think it says.

wasnt swearing/insults/slurs for me - I could care less usually myself
it was all the chatter for shock effect, quite frankly it rarely past any of the regular lines, painted some rather nasty pictures, and most disturbing is the type of people who want to speak like that - I had chat off pretty much through the entire day, and when I popped it back on, had reason to take it back off
I'm not easily offended, but at the same time I dont need to listen to attention starved children trying to one-up eachother for disgusting shock value

hey, i just want to know if i could get banned for swearing in guild or team chat?? my guildies and i talk trashy and swear on guild chat all the time, but we're all buddies and are not offended by it. its just all in good fun. and sometimes when i'm in a mission or a party i may swear about something, but not at people or call people down. like something i did last night, playin a mission with another person, i had to place 1 of 2 tablets on a pedestal. i clicked on the pedestal, and as soon as i placed it there i see the other person say don't place it yet. of course too late now, so my response was ****... i'm sorry. will i get banned for that? i mean, i never swear on public chat and didn't even know i could turn the chat filter off until i read some posts here.
I don't try to be offensive, but i don't censor the way i talk either. I don't want to try to log in and play to find out i've been banned just cause i swore on team chat or in guild chat. I agree with banning people who repeatedly swear on public chat or call people down, but to me swearing isn't as bad as all the people calling others NOOB and Idiot and all that other derogatory stuff i saw goin on during the mad kings games. Just cause someone couldn't type fast enough or maybe made a typo is no reason to call them a stupid noob.

I kinda doubt that people at ANet would say "Oh noes! He made a swear! /permaban" if you just do it once, but I don't really know.
Clawdius_Talonious
Swearing on guild chat and team chat is probably fine as long as you don't offend anyone.

I can deal with the language and the insults. I keep the chat filter on and ignore the main chat area anyway. Too much trade/sell spam or ppl having conversations that I am not apart of so I dont get involved.
The one thing that tickedme off was one moron who felt it was his duty to spoil the Nightfall storyline secrets in the main chat (the one time I had the main chat open). He just went" What? Im just saving you the time so you dont have to play Nightfall." I think about a dozen ppl reported him.
