well first off they are all stand alone games... and if you want the full "guildwars experience" buy all three... but if i were you being new maybe buy the nightfall one first because since its new that means more people will be willing to do quests and missions with you and if you enjoy that then buy the other two. also you have to look at the fact that GW is more really for pvp and that pve is somewhat like a side thing to do for maybe many players... so if youre really looking for a nice pve game gw doesnt really do that since its more focused on pvp for the most

Nightfall is a good PvE game, as are Factions and Prophecies. Start with Nightfall, see if you like it, then go on to the other two. PvP is very good in GW but is optional. I play it only for PvE and like it.

I think everyone will agree to avoid Factions for now though.
I think Prophecies is good for new players but more people are playing Nightfall at the moment, nothing wrong with nightfall but i feel Prophecies is better for beginners..

Factions has the quickest way to gain level 20 (level cap) and is the first of the Guild Wars to provide in game tutorials. Nightfall has followed Factions and has an in game tutorials too, but I'm not sure how they compare to the Factions tutorials yet.

The original Guild Wars was fun, but took longer to reach level cap.

I've enjoyed Guild Wars very much. Factions I wasn't as fun for me, but it was enjoyable.

Each game is a stand alone game in that you don't need any of the others if you want to play just one. They can also be treated as an expansion to whichever chapter you have initially installed. All you hve to do is add the access key to your existing account and you'll be able to take your characters to each of the lands that you've got access to.

As for which to try first, I'd suggest Nightfall. A good tutorial, excellent story line, and the learning curve is not too steep. Besides, Nightfall has the vast majority of players since it's so new. Prophecies is the first one and is good too, but there aren't as many people there right now. Which is only a problem for asking questions when you need help, but you can still do everything with AI henchmen.

I wouldn't bother with factions at all, it's by far the worst (relatively speaking) of the three and isn't new player friendly at all.

Yes, the original Guild Wars is now known as Prophecies. It is a good place to start, as would be Nightfall.

I only do PvE and have been playing for about a year and a half so it just depends on the person whether they like PvE or PvP or both.
