shouldnt they drop the price of the old chapters?
audioaxes
i couldnt believe my eyes seeing the first 2 chapters at walmart and they cost the same price as nightfall
how on earth does anet expect to pick up new players like this?
i dont know about anyone else but if i was deciding to check out guild wars my interest will quickly drop once i find out id had to buy the older chapters at full retail price to have all the skills and such
they should include all older chapters in a special edition bundle with a new release and no more than $15 premium above the stand alone new chapter

Why would they lower the price when all the engine updates, extras, and continued support is still in place.
Don't confuse Guild Wars with a stand alone off-line with some multiplayer capability game that drops in price 3 months after release.

its' not up to Anet to drop the prices, but the retailers themselves. For example, I work for GAME in the uk. Since Factions came out, the Prophecies SE has been at £9.99 almost permanently, very rarely jumping back up to £19.99 occasionally.
Factions stayed at £29.99 until Nightfall came out; its currently £19.99 when bought with Nightfall. But as said above, they're all full games in their own right, particularly Prophecies (in my mind) so there is no reason for the companies to drop prices. The only influence Anet will have is what they sell them to the retailers for; obviously if GAME buys in 30 copies at £5 each, they're not gonna sell those copies for £1.99.

How many new players will be playing guild wars for the first time via Nighfall? Now assuming they enjoy it and wish to purchase another volume, sales of the other chapters should increase significantly, and given the no fees pricing structure, it actually suprises me that the older chapters are not advertised more to take advantage of this fact
New players playing the other campaigns also helps keep the community alive.
The only downside for potential purchasers of the other chapters (particularly for new players who may want to start with chapter 1) is that all new features are not implemented across all the games.

Depends on the outlet. Wal~Mart is known to NOT be the best prices at software vs other outlets.
I just picked up a sealed copy of SE version of guildwars "Special Edition" that retails for $59.99 for $40 (oversea's shipping + money conversion) via ebay.
I have noticed that Nightfall is cheaper then original GuildWars in most retail places.

Having them all the same price provides no incentive to buy previous chapters.... why buy Prophecies for 49.99 when you can buy Factions for 49.99... why buy Factions for 49.99 when you can buy Nightfall for 49.99
If I were a new player, knew nothing about Guild Wars, I'd probably buy the most recent version of the game if they all costed the same.... that's just me though.

I look at it this way. No monthly fees. I'd much rather see all of em @ $49.99 or #39.99 and have no monthly fees than them mark them down to $19.99 per say and then have $9.99 monthly fees for the games.
I have several friends as well as guild members who started off with Factions as their number 1 game, and bought Prophecies a month or two later. The same thing will happen with Nightfall. If people like one game/expansion they'll buy the others regardless of price. It won't hinder the fact simply because they know no other MMORPG has free monthly play. I dunno, I can see the arguement, but I feel that aNet is doign a stand-up job on keeping the rates where they are.

well in my local Game shop they have already reduced the price on both prophecies and factions now.

Maybe it's just US stores that haven't lowered prices *shrug*

Only worldwide ones?! Well, it is better then none in my opinion. Some features you have in Nightfall can be used in Prophecies; Heros. Another worldwide update is the template system, dye system and other things... another good update. I can't see why you listed bug fixes... that is absurd... it's good enough for me that they help fix most problems I experience in any chapter. And every now and then, professions get buffed... or nerfed...
So yea... I agree with Kyosuke and Dougal.

Most of my friends would buy the older chapters if they were 20 bucks, but there's no way they'd pay full price for them, since they wouldn't even bother playing through them (mostly just want the skill unlocks).

In the UK anyway, prophecies ce has been £9.99 for months.

As a late comer to GW, I think it would be great for retailers to drop the price on older chapters. While I am waist deep in both Factions and NF, I wouldn't rule out curling up with Prophecies on many rainy winter nights and just henching the whole campaign. (of course, i'm assuming not many players are still in Tyria..) But... i'm not really interested in buying an old game for full retail price, y'know?
Pevil Lihatuh
Unless they're leftover stock, its the SE, not the CE that is still around of Prophecies for £9.99. I've not seen a CE since release, but I have heard play.com still has them.

The way I see it - any Guild Wars you buy is still funding the operation of the servers, so I actually don't see any good reason for a major price drop, unless it's a voucher/rebate system for people who buy more than one installment.
For that same reason, I don't think we should have to put up with the drop in support for older chapters. Newcomers who pick up Prophecies or Factions should be getting the same double drop etc weekends, as people who bought Nightfall, because they are often putting in the same investment.

Since Anet doesnt have any monthly fees, all their profit is from selling the games, so i guess thats why the prices havnt gone down....

The price for Prophecies has dropped about 10$ in Estonia. I say about 10, because i don't remember the exact conversion (so it costs somewhere near 35$ here). Anyways, i'm gonna buy Prophecies before Nightfall, since i don't already have it. Sure Nightfall has heroes and lip-synch and dervish, but Prophecies has skills that i need to make some builds more useful. Simple as that.
So yes, it depends on the places the games are sold.

If you are a new player to Guild wars, you have a choice between 3 chapters, which to you, all look pretty much the same (Just with different features). They all have pretty much the same amount of content, so why should one just be cheaper?

This all rings true to me minus prophecies... Continued versions of the game should run full price... However i think that if you own say factions or nightfall you should be able to buy the prophecies story campaign for extremly cheap... Reason being that alot of the content you supposidly got originally with prohphecies comes with the other chapters....
If you take it all away prophocies is a game with NO professions and NO skills.... It is only a story line... There is no extra game elements...
So if it wasn't for the fact that they cannot undercut the retailers in the onlin store.. I would do it like this...
You go to the store and the only thing offered is "Guild Wars" this would be considered the core version this would come with one "campaign" which is just the story line(basically what they already do)... This would be your most expensive purchase since it comes with the core guild wars already... Then you can buy online any future campaigns that go on top of this, or go to the store where the price is smaller for just a campaign upgrade... More or less its like a real expansion rather then a stand alone...
That may seem confusing but all im really saying is you could buy either Stand alone editions of the games, or expansion editions of the games...

I own all the D&D style RPG computer games. As of now, they are very dated as far as game engine goes and no one would ever pay anywhere near original retail for any of them. This is what everyone is used to having.
The GW line is completely different. The original game that you downloaded back in 2005 is not the same one a new purchaser would download today. And if you buy Prophecies in another 12 months, it will have changed immensely again.
So, as you are not purchasing an "outdated" game, why should you get bargain prices.

i own them all already.... My only thing is from a perspective of a new player/buyer.... It's intimidating to know I have to pay 150 bucks for a game... The reason I say that is because the way I play and buy games is in entirety... When I bought Diablo II for instance, I bought it with the expansion... I waited till i could afford both before buying either... The way I look at guild wars is... If I didnt have an account, I'd need 150 bucks in order to start playing again... Thats not good business... People will be turned off from it...
EternalTempest
I do think once Chapter 4 comes out (since NF is the end of the 1st "trilligy" if GuildWars) they will start do bundles or make the MSRP $29.99 or less at the least. That would force retailers to lower there price if they haven't done so.
coldplay
They should drop price for previous chapters and release some sort of triology pack in near future.
gentrinity
i went to Ebay and for a Prophecies CE edition -- pretty decent buy -- though, there are hardly any left available to purchase.

$150 before you start playing? Do you know how long it will take you to get thru prophecies if you don't cheat & get ran thru areas? You will have plenty of time to earn money for the next chapter before you finish the first. Just enjoy each storyline without going over to the next one prematurely.
Bandwidth & servers are not cheap, nor are the people that maintain them, that's why you don't get Guildwars cheap....if you think that is expensive, go play WoW. I think the game has hit a low of 19.99-29.99 U.S. Dollars.....but it's still about $12-15 per month to play....so that's about $165 a year at least....and if you want to keep playing after a year, you still pay monthly fees or prepay for several months....the entertainment I get vs the money I spent on these games was well worth it.
Also, if you are looking here in the U.S. for Prophecies, look for the Game of the Year edition, you get some nice max weapons & off hands & I got mine for the same price as the non GotY edition. Also, I saw plenty of people selling on ebay cheap. Even if they already played, you can just pay them for the login & you download the client from GW. Just delete the toons they have & start over.
