question about scams

What exactly is Anet's definition of a scam? For example, if I sell something for 100k, and but the thing was probably worth about 5k, is that a 'scam'? From what I understand, scamming someone would be offering 50 gold instead of 50 plat for an item. If we catch that person in the act (regardless of whether or not we sell the item) are we allowed to send them in for a scam? Thanks

There could always be some counter. like if you put 50g up, you could say "Sorry, I was tired" etc.

With the 100k thing, maybe the buyer really really wanted it, and if the guy was experienced enough and had 100k to buy the items, he would know they dont go for that much. he probably would have Ebayed the cash.

Value of an item is decided between the two parties therefore no its not scamming.

As for the 50g instead of 50k that is scamming BUT only stupid people fall for that (yes you can report)

if you sell an item for less because you dont know the value, that is your fault, not to sound crass.
overall, its a general rule of thumb that you should ask around before you sell anything you are unsure of, just to be certain you arent selling a diamond for dogshit.
that having been said, if someone pulls a "bait&switch" where they say "ill offer 100k!" and then puts in 100gp, and you accept without checking; that, is a scam.
pretty much any time someone dilberatly uses wordplay to try and solicit the other party into overpaying its considered a scam.
whether or not anet does anythign about it is another matter; and in either case, you wont get the money back.

Since the update you wont be seeing the 50g instead of 50k anymore... unless some people are mentally retarted.

Actually, the value is determined buy the demand from the general population, and can be modified by the 2 parties. Just try to buy a req9 max damage 15^50 Chaos axe w/+7 vs physical damage for 2k, bet you wont get it. : D
As to the 50g for 50k you mention, thats not just a scam, its also a lack of observation on the sellers part. Personally, I almost never buy/sell anything to players, as the pricing makes no sense to me. Ive had items Idve paid a bundle for, to find out theyre worthless to others. Have also had items that I couldnt understand why they were so high priced, like 15^50 mods costing more than 15^stance mods. If you go under 50% health, you lose the damage bonus, but you can ALWAYS(unless prevented somehow) use a stance. The flip side is the -50hp cesta. I know what its used for now, but didnt when I started, checked around, sold one for 5k. Dont know why theyre so high, even considering their use. Its not like theyre rare or anything.

No, Admins Bane is right. If I choose to sell that chaos axe for 2k, thats my perogative - maybe I want to be nice (if i had lots of money, or 20 chaos axes then the value to me is much lower)? General concensus is a guide at most. YOU decide the value.

Having said that - scamming is generally any situation where one party tries to coerce or trick the other party into an agreement. If I offer to sell you that chaos axe for 2k, thats fine. But if you try to trick me into selling it to you for that price because you tell me that chaos axes just like it drop regularly now, or conversely try to sell me some cheap item for an exhorbitant amount of gold because you say it doesn't drop anymore - thats scamming.

There is also the bait and switch routine with items. Be sure the item in the window is exactly what the seller says it is, each and every time they modify the offer. When they do modify the trade, that's a RED FLAG warning sign to double check the item(s) in the window.

If both parties are clear on what the thing you are selling is, and what the price you/they want is, you can sell it for whatever you want.

e.g:

Bob:Selling Ascalon Longsword, Max damage! 100k
n00b:Ok, I'll buy!
Bob:Sure, here ya go!
n00b:Thanks.

^That is not scamming. You were selling a Max damage Ascalon longsword, and some n00b wanted to buy it for 100k. Sure, its not very nice taking advantage of n00bs like that, but its not scamming.

However, if Bob makes a false claim about the item, such as:

Bob:Selling Ascalon Longsword, Rarest and most powerful item in the game! Only one available in the whole game and I have it!! 100k
n00b:Wowzers!!!! I'll buy!
Bob:OK, here ya go.
n00b:Thanks
Bob (aside): Hehe, sucker.

True. In fact, I screenshot all my trades, the acceptance, as well as the final result(you traded "player" item X "Player" Traded you ItemY(or X amount of gold), just to be on the safe side.
