A shame it's a change so big that, if implemented, would be for GW2 only... T-T...

/signed SASv2
SASv2 itself would be a huge improvement to the current system we have. In addition, I like the concept of "unlocking" armors and can be changed easily in towns/outposts. It goes inline with the current way we manage professions.
As long as armors do not take up inventory space or only takes up 5 slots (with the other armor arts changeable at will), I can see alot of benefits:
1) Longevity of the game is increased for players that aim to unlock all armor art.
2) Storage space problems are somewhat reduced alittle.
However, I'd honestly prefer that the idea be implemented only for unlocking armor art (which is in the same spirit to hero armor system). The difference is that the "+1 item attribute" helm is considered a different helm. With so little gold sink in GW, I think it's better to leave insignias and runes to be purchased by the players in order to make gold more worthwhile. Armors are too expensive to be used as a reliable gold sink, runes/insignias however can be treated like consumables.
What I mean is therefore:
Radiant [Primeval][\/] [Helmet][\/] of Minor Tactics

This would make my organized armor, even more organized. My boots constantly change from Strength to Tactics depending what the build needs. I don't feel like buying an extra pair of boots, which is more expensive than some, just to get a pair of Tactics boots.

Fabulous idea. It would still retain the gold sink idea as people would have to pay for the runes for each set of armour. Also agree with one of the above posts, where the helms have to be bought seperately in order to retain the gold sink there.
Does this mean that there would be a separate tab for all armour types also saving us the space in our inventories that is cluttered with armours?
I am sick to death of switching between axe and sword runes, tactics and strength on my warriors armour, so I welcome this with a nice big smile and open arms.

Come on Gaile, let`s get this to the bigwigs and get it enforced. The community needs a pickup after all the recent nerfs +D

After the request in made, developers have to decide if the change is necessary enough, possible, if there are resources and time, etc...
We can only hope they listed to our 'There is no room to get more than a couple sets of armor per character' plea.

Thank you all for the continued support, it is much appreciated.
@Lady Raenef:
Thanks for the support, aye.
That is the main purpose of this suggested change to the armor system, to let the players be able to better organize their armor.
For myself, I have more than one (1) pair of boots though.
@wolfmane:
Thanks for the support.
Correct, this whole Smart Armor System once properly implemented, would become the ultimate gold sink.
"Also agree with one of the above posts, where the helms have to be bought seperately in order to retain the gold sink there."
Aye, I kinda disagree with you, mate.
Helms can be made to be able to change their attributes based on what type of Rune is attached to it, this feature is introduced in Guild Wars : Eye of the North.
"Does this mean that there would be a separate tab for all armour types also saving us the space in our inventories that is cluttered with armours?"
Well, I believe that is up for ArenaNet to decide?
@MithranArkanere:
Thanks for the continued support all this while, much appreciated, mate.
Oh. Thanks for clearing that up for us aye.
So far Gaile Gray or any other representative from ArenaNet have not even posted in this thread, I wonder if they even know that there is a demand for such a feature from the community?

Well this beats armor storage by miles.
/signed for SaS v2
Now as to why 2 not 3:
v3 is tempting, but it implies a whole different ball game.
In that: 'you change the quality of your armor'.
That is no longer changes in things pasted to it or decorations on it.
To modify the quality, especially upwards;
It would become crafting, which is not a bad thing at all.
Implementing crafting that way would pretty much get rid of wearable armor all together, you would have 1 blank sheet of armor, with a possible skin for nakedness.
[scouts][>][no][>]leggings [of Expertise][>][0][X] ([X] 'cuz you can't have AL)
This armor would be your permanent armor, and you'd modify it for any skin or inscription type.
You would have to 'learn' armor skins, ranges of AL, minor, major and superior versions of every rune, and all different types of insignias
From rune masters(runes), blacksmiths(skins & AL ratings) and scribes(insignias).
You would have to teach each of your characters crafting, and high AL ratings and superior runes would only start to be available from lvl 20 area's, and cost more money and materials to learn, than minor ones.
Elite skins are exclusive to elite areas and still very expensive.
You'd be able to work your heroes armor with your own skill, instead of having their armor increase by itself.
That would mean you'd be able to learn runes and insigna's for your heroes their professions, but not be able to use them on yourself.
Would be a shame then if you could not do the same for other players, might be a good idea of that takes some materials though...
[EDIT]
Both into v3 is more like crafting and into the OP
What about the armor/you 'learning' paints as well; so that you'd be able to mix those around once added, as well.

Don't think Anet will care. If implemented, this would drastically reduce our goldsink in armor, which means we will grind less until WOW 2 comes out.

How many people you know that have made one set of each, including non-prestige ones?
With this, they would be able to keep all the sets crafted, thus encouraging much more people on getting more and more sets, spending more and more gold.
The ultimate gold sink.

Meh I just buy one set of armor (and I usually get around 2 sets due to multiple usage ect.), but that's just me though :/
Most people don't even have over 50k and I am sure everyone has no self-control about this "SHINY THING" you saw someone selling in town. I just don't like most "SHINY THINGS" :O

Had a similar idea myself in the shower lol, the whole absorb and recall in outpost bit.
Hell you could use the existing pvp armor creation template and only list the runes "absorbed" like the pvp ones can only use those "unlocked".
Would save a lot of people a lot of time and money.
Only problem i can see with it is this (and its pretty unlikely), but not having to buy several sets of armor and replacement runes etc could increase inflation slightly as it removes one of the ways of removing quite a lot of gold from the game. Not sure whether its a good or bad thing but its a consideration.
Nice idea

This is an AWESOME way to keep me from having to buy perfect salvage kits or a whole other set of armor just so I can run a different build. I like most of my armor as is and don't want to have to switch my looks to play, say, air instead of fire. In a game as varied as GW, where the same class can play a massive number of different ways, not being able to change primary stat givers/buffs is obnoxious and limiting. Dunno about the rest of you, but I don't have the storage for all that stuff as it is.

It's not needed, you can either make do with what you have or eat the extra costs, these are petty wants not needs.
Besides that, might be cool if partially implemented in GW2.

If you play with all your characters, you end up with no space for all the armors you get. And thus, you end up having to delete old armors to get new ones.

I think this is a brilliant idea and a storage saver. It might also get more PvE interested in PvP as this saves time for Armor builds for PvE characters doing PvP.

would realy like to see this actually, because :
a) it saves storage space for people that like to have multiple armor skins (i stopped buying armor cause i cannot store it)
b) it would make PvE toons more or less the same than PvP toons when it comes to picking armor bonusses/insignia's/...
might be wise to add some sort of notifier though when you start something (zone to instance/start mission/enter PvP) with less than your maximum AL ...

This would save so much room for armor.
And I like how it'd like, absorb the armor skins and stuff. Means we wont only have 1 armor skin.
And with the headsets, I also agree that it should be +1 to what ever the current rune is that is in there
But how would this work for heroes? Just the same?

Been wanting this for quite some time now, I limit myself to only the elite armors that I like the look of, but that is still 3 sets per char average. hell I have 6 on my ele... what do I need 6 for?
I know others have every set for a toon as well, this would be a much appriciated upgrade.
