Requesting Help. Game Freeze everytime.

Hi, 3 weeks ago I buyed a new VideoCard a Nvidia Geforce 6800XT. I needed this card for other games like Battlefield 2142, Need For Speed Carbon etc. But as soon I started Guild Wars playing again, the game began to freeze after some minutes playing. Before this I had a ATI Radeon 9800Pro, with no problems. I updated reinstalled GW, Windows and changed some settings at Nvidia control panel, but it doesnt help.

System Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz
Memory Ram: 2048MB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 6800XT
Soundcard: Hercules Muse 5.1
1 CD/DVD drive.
160GB Hard-disk.
And a 300 WATT PSU (Power Supply Unit)

(PSU must be good becaus all other games I play at High, with no problems. And it doesnt get hot).

Although your machine may perform well with most games, I would suggest upgrading your PSU. The 6800xt is a demanding beast, and when compounding with the other devices in your system, that 300W PSU can be getting more work than it can handle.

Another thing to look at are the temps on that card under load, as well as the temps for your system and CPU. This is more of a precautionary step to ensure that there is no chance of malfunction due to heat failure.

Freeze as in completely lock up, never to return again or an extended freeze/stutter that you recover from?

Just asking as I had the extended stutter lock after installing the latest directsong soundtrack and that just required a media player upgrade to fix.

The PSU is fine. Ultra version of 6800 get 80 W if i remember, if im right mine get almost the same. Company's of all their grapichs cards dont want to give excactly their Power that the card need minimum. Totaly i get is between 250W 290W, so thats fine.(Becaus i dont use alot of things on my pc). Overheating is also not a problem, the tempature = 50C

I think i found the problem right now, im just checking now.

Actually, a 300W PSU isn't just fine. It may say 300W, but if it's a generic PSU, i.e. not a branded one like Hiper or Antec, then it may be putting out slightly less than 300W. Seen as you say you've calculated that you use 290W that doesn't leave you much room at all.

When the game locks up, do you still have cursor control? Does the sound seem to be in an infinite loop? Also, has this occured from the initial installation of your GFX card, or something that seems to have occured only recently (i.e. since the latest GW update)?

Its fixed, now the problems where:

Bios settings.
Video Card settings.


BTW CPU is fine it only get warm if i play bf2142, becaus its a heavy game.
With gw not.

I also saw that the XT version needs 300 (not excactly) watt minimum for a system like me. Fine all here.

First replace the PSU with one that has at least 420 watts. Then uninstall the Video card drivers completely and all related software(anything that says Nvidea in the add remove software settings). Then reinstall the newest drivers from nvidea.
I do stress replace the PSU 300 watts isnt enough to handle most of the video cards out there, and most people dont factor in the power requirements of the Hard drive, cpu, optical drives, and any extgra fans they may have. Everything that you have in you computer requires power to run, and if there isnt enough it can lead to instability, including lockups.
