You know how hero armor increases as they level up? It would be kinda cool if they did something like that for the weapons, only maybe instead of based on level, based on attribute. For example, a hero sword starts with starter sword stats. Then, as you raise Swordsmanship, the sword gets more powerful. Once you reach 9 swordsmanship, the Sword is max damage. Hero weapons are (obviously) only usable to heroes, but heroes can use non-hero weapons if they desire.
You never buy hero armor, just upgrade it. Under this system, weapons would work the same way, which would be pretty cool.
