Well, it's not that they don't like the game as a whole, it's that they don't like parts of it. They may enjoy 80% of the game, but hate the other 20% of it. Overall, they had fun playing, even though they wish that 20% they didn't like had been better. I think they also realise that future chapters will more than likely be better than previous chapters, because ANET is aware of what players liked, and what they didn't like in previous chapters. That way, they can make all of their upcoming games better. As long as people feel they've gotten their moneys worth, they will continue to purchase upcoming chapters if they are able to.
If ANET goes and makes an enitre chapter based around killing level 0 Aloe Seeds like the ones found in Pre-Searing Ascalon, you can bet people will not play that chapter very much, and perhaps stop playing Guild Wars altogether. So far, though they've kept people mostly happy.
Even if the playerbase is divided into two groups, and both groups can only agree on both liking 20% of the game, but each group may still like 40% of the game that the other group does not. So, everyone enjoyed most of their time playing, and will most likely purchase the game again. Even though they hated 40% of the content.
They just don't want to make one chapter that is, so good that tops all of the others, even future ones. They don't want to spread out the community, either, because if they do that less people have fun(which means less people buy future chapters, too). That's one reason why they're not updating past chapters to make them all players ever hoped for. It would draw many players away from the current chapter, and future chapters. Another, reason is because doing so costs money, and they would not make a profit off of updating old content.
You're right, old games will be mostly deserted. The same is true for Diablo complared to Diablo 2, and Diablo 2 LoD. You find more people playing D2LoD than you do playing D2, or plain Diablo. It's newer, and it's got more content, which is better content. It's sad that old chapters will be mostly deserted, yes, but you can still go back and play them with friends, guildies, or your trusty henchmen. Either way, even if no other chapters were released, intrest in Prophicies would get smaller and smaller. People would get tired of the content, and move onto other games.
I hope I've explained it well enough. It's a complicated subject that one could talk about for a very long time, because it involves what players want, which is almost entirely subjective because it is all about what an individual wants out of a game, why they play that game, what they enjoy in that game, et cetera, and ANETs buisness model as it relates to each player(you could probably break players down into about ~15 general groups, which cover most everyone). But like I said, it's a very complex subject, and it doesn't have much to do with the suggestion :P
