Why are people pimping their heroes?

Why do people seem so intent on pimping their heroes?
I've completed the Elona campaign, capped some nasty skills, filled in gaps in my Tyria and Canthan maps, and generally played most of the game with a few heroes at my side. I mapped all the odd corners of Lornar's Pass with just three heroes last night.
The heroes I use (Koss, Dunkoro, Tahlkora, Zhed, Olias) have good green or gold items, and a couple runes or insignias each. None have vigor runes, none have full sets of insignia, and the other 9 heroes are still using pretty basic equipment I found.
The heroes kick butt; I took out eight Avicara near Droks with just Koss, Dunkoro, and Tahlkora. Without any expensive equipment or runes. If I find something useful, I'll give it to a hero, but why waste tons of money and effort on glorified henchmen?
Okay, I spend money on armor and runes and insignias for my characters. But why put so much effort into heroes when they're effective with much less expense?

Simply because the classic wammo with his crystalline wants to be "uber leetz0r" and thinks by kitting out his heroes he will be "1337".
Thats it simply.

there are players out there that have loads of plat. that they have nothing else to do with it but pimp out their heroes.
If players are actually going out of their way to farm for their heroes, then I feel sorry for them that they think that it is important to do so.

I dont purchase anything for my hero's. Everything they have equiped is from drops and salvages of those drops.
justadude
Koss is teh pimpster. Having him in my party pimps me.
I don't know about others, but I just give them what they need. I got Dunkoro a sup protection rune to run his build better and gave him an 20% enchant staff. Koss got a good sword beinbg my primary tank. Other that that I have been relying on drops.

I could see a point if the heros were account wide, but they arent so its just a waste of time.

I will never buy anything for my heroes. They'll get equipped with what drops for me, nothing more. And if it is something rare and precious I will give it to my guildies or friends or just sell it right away and not give it to my heroes. After all, it's just henchmen. I will most definitely not start farming to equip all the heroes of all my characters with Superior Vigors and the like.

I saw a thread the other day that consisted of complaints about the cost of fully equipping multiple sets of heroes. I couldn't believe it. Why would you?
I have a new Dervish and a Tyrian warrior using heroes right now. The warrior gave a collector sword from inventory to her Koss and that was it. Everyone else is getting whatever drops. I guess I could transfer an unused green sword to the Dervish's Koss. My guildmate suggested I give a Koss one of my chaos axes and I got a pain in my chest.
By the way, the heroes get their own percentage of the drops, why can't they upgrade their own equipment?

Why do people buy FoW armor just for the looks and don't pimp their heroes with stuff that actually DOES something, strange, very strange...
jimmy_logic
I spent plats on upgrading my heroes armor and that.. and spent quite little getting them greens from Prophecies and crafted the rest. Its good to have your heroes setup becuase its fun to try to actually play 2 people... quite hard if you ask me.
KamikazeChicken
It costs nearly nothing to "pimp" out a hero, so why should anyone care what someone chooses to spend ~5k on?
Rusty Deth
i bought a couple things for my heroes...
But yeah, they really get the job done as is. Most I spent was to get one of the monks a Sup Divine Favor and that was about it on over spending. My guess is Sup Helaing went up because of the Heroes.
But from now on whatever drops is theres. I have gotten some good items out of chests that would be good to use, but hard to sell. So why put them to waste. Just save them for Heroes.
I have a good streak of getting loads of Mesmer stuff. Now that I got the Mesmer hero I'll just need to pop a few more chests and he'll be pimped out.

I give my heroes perfect weapons I customized for my self and save the trouble of buying them, they can use them just as well.

People spend their money on much dumber things than making Heroes more effective.

Why do people (generally) do anything?
A very simple answer: Because they WANT to.
In the end, it's personal choice. If they want to spend tons of money on pimping their heroes, let them. If you don't want to, fine. If someone else wants to just use stuff from drops, that their choice. See what I mean? It's all personal choice, so why are we complaining about it? Do you feel pressured to do the same so that you 'fit in' with the crowd?
Personally I give my heroes stuff occassionally because I feel it does make them just a little bit more effective. Why? Because I can and because I feel like it. Am I made out of gold, no but unlike many my game play isn't driven by the need to amass massive amounts of gold to 'feel good about myself' or to make me seem 'better' than anyone else. The whole point of playing/doing certain things is because you enjoy it, is it not?

I've picked up runes and insignias for my ritualist's and paragon's heroes, along with the golds and greens I saved before Nightfall, but other than that I won't be going crazy with my heroes. I'll use what I find for them, pick up some minor runes here and there, and that's about it. I think runes are a must for heroes like Olias and Dunkoro, since I rely on them a lot in PvE.
Some people just simply have to have the best of everything, and will go and buy superior vigors and rare skinned weapons for their heroes because they can.

I play with Heros more then people there for I want them to be as effective as possible.
I play maby 2 of my accounts often only 1 that I work on titles and such. Not playing on sup vigors atm and such but a major vigor is an extra 41 hp and I only "pimp" the ones I use often.

Well, why equip yourself? If henchies are good enough with no runes, and attrubutes maxed at 12, and real players are better than henchies, then why should playable characters get equipped with runes and weapon mods?
Right...because it makes them more effective.
I have a MM hero, and he has a Superior Death rune. Why? Because I'd rather have 10 level 18 minions than 8 level 14's.
Have you ever been in a PUG in which the MM started rasing level 14 minions? Was the group happy that they chose that MM over another one? Heroes aren't just for soloing the game - they're also for fleshing out groups of real players. I'd like for my heroes to be on par stat-wise with the player that my group wants, but can't find.
And I can afford it, because I use 1.5k armor and collector's weapons.

I bought a full set of runes and insignias for my heroes, but I'll salvage and reuse them when I'm ready to play through the game with my next character. Well worth the money.
I'm customizing hero weapons where it matters, such as bows and axes, but I'm not bothering with caster weapons - they can be shared around. One good staff will do the job for all my Dunkoros.

Because ... well, what else am I going to spend my money on? I have too many sets of weapons, too many sets of armour, and a sack full of cash I'm not using otherwise.

Not much use for gold, so pamper yourselves, your heroes, your friends...whoever you wish.

I invested ~30k in green staves from ToPK specifically for my caster heroes. My Koss on my monk has a perfect 15% while stanced req8 chaos axe. Why? I couldn't sell it for a decent price and now that NF is out everyone wants the hot new skins and inscribable weapons. Being locked into 15% stanced isn't as attractive anymore. So selling it now is just gonna be a pain in the arse. My other Koss heroes have shadow blades and miscellaneous axes from various sources. All high req and with silly mods like 20%<50%hp. Impossible to sell. Good enough for my heroes to use.
fgarvin
Every player has different goals. I'm all about Collector items for my heros, while some only want Golds and Greens for theirs. To each their own.
Velvet Wing
Since I finished my 12 chars before Nightfall came out (at least one of every prof) and already spend my heard earned cash (little farming, mostly made by playing trough the game) on some nice weapons (greenies mostly). It was easy for me to equip my henchies with great weaponry.
The armor they have will be upgraded with insignias, just to make them more usefull.. like in the example of minions being better with higher death, I prefer them to rock instead of suck.. If that makes me spend a bit of cash, so be it

Maybe because things cost 20g to remove if you change your mind? All my heroes I use reguarly have a full set of runes, I give them insignias if I find them.
Clawdius_Talonious
Most of my heroes are pimping collectors weapons and whatever runes I find as far as vigors are concerned, along with a pair of major runes. They're cheap enough to equip, none of my heroes have insignias yet, besides Koss sporting a few Dreadnoughts insignias I found.
Jetdoc
Because they want other players (that they never team up with anymore because they use their heroes) to see how good their heroes look?
Darakus
As I have neither the time, the willingness or the money to spend on turning my heroes into tuned up machines I will not do it.
I'm of the opinion that it would be much nicer for the heroes to do it themselves with the share of the the money they get.
Frankly speaking I don't see why I should spend time in a challenge mission to get a green item meant to allow my hero to change armor where he most likely has more than enough from his share of the drops to buy a decent armor from an armorer. If my hero doesn't do it why should I?
As a side not I know myself well enough to be aware of the fact that one hero boosted would never be enough for me and that I would want all 16 in the same state, 16 times 8 characters is 128 which means a huge time spent on this and I call that grind (grind = huge amount of time spent doing something I don't find fun to do). If I had sticked with one character I might have done it but the only two classes I couls have seen myself as playing for the full trilogy would have been mesmer or ranger and I experienced them on an account that has neither faction nor nightfall.
I'm almost to the point where I'd hope for a fresh start from ANet in the next chapter (A guildwars 2 providing us with the whole continent and having us restart from scratch) but this time with a means to change primary profession once one primary is mastered (the ultimate flexibility in terms of profession, without being overpowered as you still can't play more than one at once) and the best thing is you only would need one character slot for it.

I'm quite happy with collectors items and crappy drops from chests / mobs to kit out my heroes ... all except one. My ele is my first character...and my favourite. As such I try to get her the best of everything, and now unfortunately I feel I want to do the same for her heroes. So I have a Scar Eater on Dunkoro...a near perfect Gold Hammer on Koss...and that's about as far as I have got. All my other character's heroes can have collectors / purple stuff since there's nothing wrong with it but...I dunno...my ele has all the titles and I feel she just deserves it. Call it a project if you wish...something to do with her now she's finished the game...
As for insignias...if they drop I will apply them to heroes armor, otherwise they go without

Alll of my Tahlkoras and Dunkoros have the collector healing staff from Witman's Folly. That's where I level my heroes and get the collector items. All of my Kosses have collector or dropped shields and the unsellable high req, 12-14^50 non-popular skin swords/hammers/axes. All my other casters gets the death staves from the Snake dance collector, even my non necro heroes. I don't really care about the req not matching the attributes, because I want my casters to have more energy for casting. Jin gets bows from my ranger's collection.

Just a guess here, but maybe some people have a shite load of money and now have something practical (even considering decreasing margins of return) to spend it on.

koss = easy to equip. SSaki's sword = 5k, grognars defender = 5k. warrior hench with a decent skillbar = priceless.
same with monk hero's. scar eater = 10k
elswyths recurve bow = 5k
gihals staff was around 12k.
you can get cheap daggers for sin hero for around 5-10k.
crafted fire staff from kaineg center = like 6k after materials, then like 10k for upgrades.
total = less than ONE good 15>50 rare skinned weapon for any certian character

My heroes get the items that I think look cool on them and I don't use in my weapon sets. No runes so far.
So they are some kind of extra storage for the weapons I don't use myself, but kept in inventory because of the looks.
I'm not spending cash on the weapons, they are just regular drops.

My caster heroes are quite happy to start with the pre-order Ritualist staff. I have given my Kosses the Sskai's sword and Sunreach shields that I got during triple green weekend. I don't mind putting runes on them because I look at it as only temporary. When I need the rune - there it is.
******** TIP *********
If you have runes in your inventory taking up space - put them on your heroes. You will be able to salvage them back 100% of the time and the armor won't be destroyed. So, hero armor is like "increased rune storage".
********************
Anyways, I just bought a few superior vigors since the price dropped because I will be buying some 15k sets. For now, they will be applied to various heroes until I get the armor.
When you want to play on a different character, simply take the runes and weapons off the heroes and give them to your heroes on your active character. I guess this isn't a big deal if you only have a couple of characters, but I have many, so it gets to be a problem with a solution.

Not only are heros free rune and insignia storage, they're also free weapon & offhand storage. Switch in a hero, give 'em a weapon & offhand, switch 'em out. Out of your inventory for the time being.

Because I have millions in the bank and no longer need to kit out PvE characters for PvP.

Like Ensign said people with a lot of spare cash will "pimp" their heroes just because they can.
