FORWARD:

*Note this is a guide for getting armor pieces, if you want a high score use a 55*

After hours upon hours of struggling with this mission, I've successfully killed 13 lost souls in one run, earning my high score of 168 on lost souls alone (and netting me my final armor piece). After wurming through this challege for so long, I recorded all the locations that lost souls spawn to help others out. The RED areas are lost souls that require you to leave the wurm in order to get.

PHYSICS OF LOST SOULS:

Lost souls disappearing is a load of BS. Once one lost soul appears, it will stay in its designated area until you kill it. Only one lost soul appears at a time and after you kill it another will spawn in one of the random locations on the map in 30 seconds.

GENERAL STRATEGY:

Before we start change you secondary to assassin, put 12 in shadow arts and bring the following skills:

~Death's Charge
~Dark Escape
~Dash
~Shadow Form (E) *I haven't tested this to work vs. maddened strike, but it seems good in my head*
~One strong attack that casts in under 1 second (aftershock, flameburst, etc.)

The best way to do this challenge is to unlock all four chambers of the map ASAP by earning 60 points. In order to do this, kill 8 lesser infestations as soon as the clock starts using ONE NORMAL ATTACK THEN STRIKE. As soon as the "A lost soul has appeared" message pops on the screen immediately kill a greater infestation using BITE, STRIKE, and A NORMAL ATTACK. By then the maddened spirit that spawns 5 seconds after the message should be in range. Use your STOMP attack, BITE, STRIKE, and then finish him with a normal attack in order to minimize the damage you take from him. After killing the first maddened, kill 4 orbs then a greater. By this time another maddened should come out and you will be ready. Repeat this process until all 4 greaters in the central area have been eaten. After this you should have about 43-50 points. Kill 4 more lesser infestations and move out of the central area to an unlocked area of your choice. Find another greater and wait for the maddened spirit to come. Kill the greater when the maddened appears and then murder him for more points. This should put you at 60 or at least close to it.

After reaching 60, you will IGNORE EVERYTHING BUT LOST SOULS. Tunnel your way clockwise around the map using the burrow skill as a speed boost and also as a means of avoiding maddened spirits. If you run low on life use the burrow then BITE on a lesser infestation (This is safe to do as long as your are 1.25 aggro circles away from you tailing maddens). This will net you 500 free life, since the bite will cancel the burrow and force a knockdown before the attack. This is you main method of staying alive. As you tunnel around the map, be sure to stay away from the entrance to those big square temples because a maddened may suddenly spawn and get you by surprise.

Follow my handy dandy map to get to the locations of the lost souls and murder them with BITE. If you reach a lost soul that is RED, use the tunnel command to put a good distance between you and your maddened chasers. You will then RUN THE WORM AGROUND, forcing it to spit you out (You must have a distance of about 1.75 aggro circles from the maddens in order to get off the worm safely). Immediately use dark escape to gain some ground when the maddens catch up to you. Use dash when dark escape runs out. Use death's charge to shadow step to the lost soul that you are killing. Immediately use your strongest attacks to down the soul then use dash to escape the closing maddens. Keep spamming dash until you reach a worm spool. This should leave you plenty of room to get a new worm and leave the pesky maddens in the dust.

Thats about it, keep repeating the process until you get all your armor. Enjoy and good luck!

Just met you in Remains of Sahlahja when you told us of this thread. Great and organized, and very helpful map!

EDIT: Just after trying your map. First time out using your map and I killed 8 lost souls and got 3 armor pieces scoring 161 points just barely off the top 10 best right now :-(

As far as the skills ya I use bite as a first attack but its all the same amt of dmg in the combo so its really just a matter of preference...however using bite first gives more time to recharge. And I run a R/W with a hammer for this I have enough fast runs to get away from a spirit even if he is in my aggro circle jumping out of the worm.

Ive always juggled with the concept of using water snares or ironmist. for speed buffs use flame/wind djinn run buff enchants eles get in NF.

Then again my ele is the only char there so Im just making use of what I have at this point in time.

Not bad; needs more Bite in the beginning sequence though, one Bite is faster than Strike and one or two attacks (depending on your weapon choice). Also, the middle spawn location in the northeast corner is too far south. (I would've had my guide out sooner, but Imageshack refuses to log me in.)

@Misc Merik: Snares don't work on Maddened Spirits, at least not when you haven't killed a Greater Infestation which is when it matters.

Actually I did some testing. Junundu strike is a cancellable attack, meaning if you use it right after a normal attack it will hit right after with little delay. Think of how rangers can sneak an extra arrow into a dual shot with distracting shot or punishing. I still think doing this is faster than using bite, which takes an entire second and a half.

Very nice guide. Haven't gone for any of the armors yet (still working on the Elite Sunspear sets), but this should be very handy for when I do.

Even though you can use it to avoid the aftercast on a normal attack (which I haven't really looked into), there's still the aftercast on Strike. Strike takes 1.75 seconds total, the same as Bite, so no matter what you're still faster with a Bite.

A couple points, after getting the hang of it and snagging three of my armors:

With a couple souls (particularly the northeast one), where you have to backtrack to pull out, it may be easier to kill off the soul with a siege attack (if you have it), rather than closing to melee and giving the Maddened Spirits more time to catch up. It also speeds things up in the central area a bit.

The souls aren't always in the exact positions on the map, they seem to wander a little. I've passed one more than once because I don't move close enough for them to show up with Ctrl held down.

Lost Souls no longer drop armors, Maddened Spirits (the pink ghosts) do. So all you really have to do is camp a Greater Infestation, kill it when you see a Maddened Spirit, then kill the Maddened Spirit. Repeat.

For mapping, the primary profession doesn't matter but a secondary with running stances/shouts helps in the rocky terrain areas. Secondary Assassin with shadow stepping skills work really well.

I have been killing the "Maddened Spirits" but have not got a armor drop yet so not sure this is correct.

Also I read the "Maddened Spirits" spawn every 2 minutes well that is wrong as well it seems like it is every 45 seconds as I have enough time to kill one a single normal the have greater ready to drop when they pop.

If they do drop them then there has to be a better way to kill them because the greaters do not seem to respawn so you have to go long distances to get them thus end up with 2-3 "Maddened Spirits" following you. Even if you manage to kill a greater before they get to you, killing one is doable but two at once is impossible.

So I am thinking maybe massive ranger trapping them to death with out having to hunt and kill greaters might be possible or a combination of Ranger traps and Rit Spirits. Or maybe using consumables that give speed and or armor boosts, just not sure if they are still in affect while using a wurm.

This thread is 10 months old; you may have better success looking in my thread. You can kill more than half the Greater Infestations before the number of Maddened Spirits becomes a problem. Two or three are doable, more than that is suicide.

Also, drop rates get really low after you've gotten a few armors.
