Avatar question

I made a new screen name and wanted to upload the same animated icon I used for my former screen name. However when I try to do this I get the message "You may not upload animated images".

Am I doing something wrong or can we no longer use animated icons? I'm just a little confused since I already use one.

Animated avatars can no longer be uploaded by users. Those who already had them can keep them as long as they don't change them.

Dang. I have a nice animated avatar I was going to upload.

Just for curiosity's sake, I wonder why we can't use them. The one I tried to upload was less than the 20Kb limit. <---------Not complaining, or arguing, just curious. -Thx

They cause more server strain or something along those lines...those that have animated avatars had them before the ban was put in place.

But I saw some-one who joined in October 2006 with one. :/
