Hey, so I was able to hop on the Guru mIRC channel over the weekend because I was home. I can't while I'm at school because my school blocks the necessary port.

Anyway, I was hoping someone could tell me if there was a way to change the port that's used so that I could connect. I've never used mIRC before so a step-by-step would be great

Thanks!

I am REALLY REALLY ignorant about irc, but try to do this: in View menu, select Options, then Connect. There you should see the port the program uses. Maybe if you change it you will be able to connect.

Most schools and businesses block the ports used by IRC clients. This is done to prevent hackers from taking them over and useing them as "Zombie" machines.

What you need to do is talk to the Network Administrators, and ask them what ports to reassign IRC to on their network.

No dice on asking the Itech guys. They usually aren't too receptive to the problems of students (they're kind of like that SNL skit- Nick Burns Your Company's Computer Guy).

Can anyone else point me in the right direction?

Then you are gonna be SOL, unless you are willing to try and hack your way through the firewall.

This is not an IRC issue, it is a port and firewall issue. And there is no simple answer, since every network and firewall is set up differently. There are hundreds of ways they could have done it, and hundreds of ways to work around it, depending on how it was done in the first place.

They may have redirected the ports to some obscure port, or they may have totally blocked it and all IRC traffic from their network. Without either hacking or inside information (or assistance), you will not be able to fix it.
