Monk PVE Builds (That don't need Elites)
Phantom Flux
I just started a Monk from Nightfalls. Does anyone have any very effective builds? What's the most favored secondary? I would check up Wiki if it wasn't so ghetto slow or just not working.
Lurid
I've never attempted to make a build for late game usage without the use of elites, however imo the most effective secondary for this would be Mesmer. Simply because of the non-elite energy management skills they bring to the table. You can always unlock the elites via PvP unlocking, can you not?
Poison Ivy
Slap on some healing skills, bring Channeling and Signet of Devotion, watch your position and your set.

yes you can, but you still cant buy them for your PVE char, can you?;p im assuming he doesnt care about PVP for now, but if you do, or will later, go with /assasin secondary. theres not really many builds you will find for the noob island, and youll soon have some elites anyways, so just watch some stuff; bring hex, and condition removal. try to avoid 10e spells, or if you have them, make sure you can handle your energy well. signets are nice, free heal for most cases. dont ever use healing breeze. dont try to mix prot/DF/heal at the start, or later if you want; its not too effective due to the lack of attribute points to spend. - suppose thats about all i got to say for now. good luck carbajac
I'd go with:
Ethereal Light/Vigorous Spirit/Heal Touch Orison of Healing Dwayna's Kiss Divine Healing Heal Party Mend Condition Holy Veil Rebirth Max Healing Max Divine Favor Rest in Protection I like Ethereal Light, use it if you have access to Factions. Healing touch would also be real nice. I'm not a huge fan of Vigorous Spirit, but use it if you like it. To me, energy management isn't a huge problem in PvE to necessitate a mesmer secondary. Especially at low levels, you don't have the attribute points to spread yourself out across three attributes (4 if you put more than your leftovers in Protection Prayers for Mend Condition). Don't spam Heal Party too much or Divine Healing and you should be good. Lurid

Oh, I was under the impression that you could buy any unlocked skill at the Hero Skills trader. Now that I re-think that, I now it to be false...

Carbajac's build would work except I'd throw in an energy management mesmer skill seeing as you can't have max anything either. Overall I'd say 4 basic heals (Orison of Healing, Dwayna's Kiss, etc.), 1 condition removal (Mend Ailment, Mending Touch, Mend Condition,) 1 hex removal (Holy Veil, Remove Hex, etc.), then an energy management skill (Energy Tap, etc.) and finally rebirth. That should suffice with as much as you can get into Inspiration and still do decent heals through healing and divine favor atts.
Effigy
Energy Tap on a monk is a no-no. Long cast time and it doesn't return that much energy. It's not even that useful on a mesmer.
You best PvE energy management skills will be Signet of Devotion, Signet of Revujenation (maybe), Power Drain, Leech Signet, and 5e monk spells. Drain Enchantment and Inspired Hex got nerfed so I don't think they're worth bothering with anymore. Channeling can be very good, but you might draw too much aggro on yourself if you use it in PvE. On the other hand, you could just play boon prot and use elite energy management. To the OP, no build should be designed without an elite skill. If you are still at the beginning of the campaign, then you won't have enough skills unlocked to make a decent build anyway. Just use the best of what you have until you get far enough along to make a real build. bungusmaximus
Throw in inspired hex as hex removal, it's free energy with points in inspiration magic. It has a longer recharge than remove hex, but remove hex takes longer to cast. If u have quick fingers throw in power drain as well, it interrupts spells and gives u energy at the same time. Energy drain has a very long cast time, a lot can die in 2 secs. theres also a signet that gives u energy when its low, i forgot the name though, but it's also inspiration magic.
The build I would run is the following: -Healing touch (self heal, double divine favor bonus) -Orison of healing (cheap and decent 5e heal) -Jamei's Gaze (expensive 10e spike heal, u should replace it by glimmer of light asap) -Heal Party (Don't over-use, it costs 15 energy, so use if u want to heal more then 3 peeps) -Mend condition (very fast recharge, drawback: it only works on others, u can also use mend ailment but the recharge is longer) -Inspired hex (Hex remove that gives u energy) -Energy tap/power drain (pros/cons are stated above, I prefer mantra of recall, but thats an elite) -Resurrect (Don't let noobs that say monks should resurrect fool you, a monk has no time to resurrect peeps, he should heal the ones that are still alive) As for the elite, You can cap glimmer of light in an early stage in the game already from a fairly easy to kill boss. I recommend to cross the water to cantha though, to cap the necessary elites. A monk's duty is to keep a party alive so people will be quite grateful if you have a complete build when you join a group). Bankai
As said before, Glimmer of light is cappable very easily and early (after the mission to cross the water, you take a main quest and arrive at an outpost. From there you can already easily cap it). I still use it.
Eilsys
Vigorous Spirit is nice. Cheap, lasts a long time, and allows Leeroys to heal themselves up. I usually bring Vigorous, Dwayna's Kiss, and Healing Touch for myself in most of my healing bars (for PvE). I'd also bring Mend Condition, for all the disease you'll get from Skale Blighters.

And Ressurect kind of sucks... don't remember what the new Nightfall res spell is, but it's probably better. bungusmaximus

Oops, my bad, my char is Cantha-born (I don't know about a good elonian spike-heal either), thats why i never use enchants either, they get raped too often. Too bad, cos vigorous spirit is indeed a very nice skill. I never resurrect during a fight, so crappy resurrect will cut it (never bothered about looking at another one). Nightfall sucks when it comes to skills anyway, i started playing to get/level my heroes, but after that I took the boat to tyria. Ensign
Gift of Health
Signet of Devotion Protective Spirit Dismiss Condition Add elite of choice and flavor to taste Peace, -CxE Phantom Flux
Wow thanks guys. Well one thiing I just learned about the monk. DAMN! You can easily spend all your skill points and I just about did that. I bought all the core monks skill, as much as I could in Tyria and now I'm trying to work on Cantha, which is probably i'll now just stick to saving and ensuring I get the build I can just use universally.
I just got my monk to a lvl 20 and the survivor title. Thanks guys, as a mesmer secondary, I bought no skills because I wasn't sure what to get. Another issue im having is energy. I bought her maxed armor and used radiant insignias. Her energy is at 48 and I believe I saw another level 20 monk player (actually a mo/rt) with greater.) Ensign
Max energy won't fix your energy problems. You need to use more efficient spells to make your energy smooth. This is the biggest problem that new (and not so new) Monks (and characters of most professions) face - they aren't good at alocating resources. Bad Monks dump all their energy into Heal Party, Healing Breeze, and Orison of Healing and wonder how they're supposed to keep people alive. Max energy gives you maybe one more spell with bad habits. Good habits will let you keep going for long periods of time.

Ok Cool. Now I have access to tyria and cantha. What are you 8 skill list suggestions for Mo/Me?

The benefit of Mesmer secondary is a lot less than it used to be. The nerf to Inspiration Magic made all the traditional ways of gaining energy a lot less effective. Power Drain and Leech Signet are the best non-elite that I see now.
Inspired/Revealed Hex don't give you energy any more, they are just free hex removal unless you put a lot of points into Inspiration, and then you get what? 1-3 energy every 20 seconds. Drain Enchantment now loses you energy unless you put lots of points in. Really it annoys me it does. Even good old MoR and Edrain don't give as much energy as they used to. Hardly sustainable energy management and more like delaying the inevitable. MoR with 10 points in Insp gives my boon prot a net gain of 10 energy, but 1 5e spell costs me 7 energy. Phantom Flux
AWWWW!! lol. I was thinking of switching to a MO/P because there's the elite: Caultry of Signet (something like that) where it removes 1 condition from the entire party and only costs some adrenaline.
Lurid
There are much better Elites, than that one. Atleast as far as traditional Monking is concerned. You'd be better off saving that slot for MoR or OoB. (Assuming they haven't / won't be nerfed soon)
Carth`
Both have been nerfed. Or you mean nerfed even more? Surely even Anet wouldn't nerf something so much that it will never ever be used again.

The best energy management you could ever have is prudent play style. For PvE, Sig of Rejuvination isn't a bad idea if you go with a straight healer build. Learn that your allies don't really need to be at 100% health all the time and you should be fine. The biggest mistake by monks in healing monks is that they waste energy using a big heal to top off a barely dented health bar. One of the best examples of this are from hench and heroes. Take a small hit at the beggining of a battle and watch your screen explode in blue numbers, lol.
Titan Chrae
I prefer protection with high DF.
I use Divine Favor as my energy managment and never have energy problems. Other Handy skills: Aegis Mend Condition Some hex removal (This is where I use the elite Blessed Light but there are non-elites) Reversal of Fortune Rebirth Divine Healing Divine Boon (If you can manage energy well) Notice there is very little actual healing in this build but it is usually more than enough. Ensign
Gift of Health, Signet of Devotion, Mend/Dismiss Condition, Protective Spirit, Shield of Absorption, Holy Veil. Other two skill slots aren't terribly important in PvE, I carry Signets of Capture. Take elite of choice and shuffle skills slightly around it - drop Veil if you want Blessed Light, Gift of Health if Zealous Benediction (and bring Dismiss), etc. Or drop a Signet of Capture. Really it's all about the Gift/Signet of Devotion/Condition removal trio and getting used to using those heavily. Work in Reversal of Fortune if you like, it's critical in PvP but not all that neccessary in PvE.

Dismiss is a very nice addition as pointed out since it not only removes conditions, but also doubles as a decent heal skill on enchanted allies.
