Newbie Needs Help in the Catacombs!!!

Hello All!
I am a newbie in the Guild Wars world. I just recently created my first Warrior/Ranger. I just made it into the Catacombs. Cool stuff! I keep getting destroyed by the raging corpses though. I am at level 6. I see a Monk just hanging around in the catacombs but am unable to invite her to my party. Can you have someone join you in the Catacombs, or is it purely a solo mission? I also have a pet, but when I go into the Catacombs it does not show up with me, so I have to fight alone. For the most part all of the enemies are fairly simple. When I get to those raging corpses (or whatever they're called) I am getting killed. Any information would be appreciated.

Also, where is the first place I can go to upgrade my armor? I have a couple of char gear (and something else that I believe could be upgraded). I believe you have to go to some kind of crafter or something. Any info here would be apprecited also. I can't find anyone in Ascalon to increase my armor. Where is the first location to do this?

And, is there anyway to just walk around instead of always running? Just curious.

First of all, welcome to GW!

1) You can invite people to your party by clicking their names and hitting the green + on your party window. The party limit varies depending on what town you are in. When someone is in your party they will be with you when you leave towns. You will find that later on, you will often want to be in a party since going solo becomes harder as the game progresses.

2) To have your pet follow you, you must have the skill Charm Animal in your skill bar when you leave town.

3)Armor that drops for you cannot be worn. Better armor can be found from either certain collectors or armor crafters found later in the game. Later on you can get runes to upgrade your current armor as well.

4) While there are certain skills that affect speed, there is no way to toggle between a walk and run.

In pre-searing you can only team with other players, no henchmen.

Your pet will go with you any time you equip the skill Charm Animal.

The only armor upgrade in pre-searing is from collectors. Look around as you travel and you see people with like "Bob [Collector]" for a name. Talk to them and they will ask for trade items, like skale fins, and give you either weapons, armor, or misc things like a belt pouch. The upgrade is minor though and really won't impact the game, but they do look nicer.

There are crafters in Ascalon on the 2nd tier, see what they can do for you.

We always run, always in a hurry, no time to stop and smell the flowers.

By the way, try holding down the Alt key and looking around. Then try the Ctrl key. They highlight different things in a town or explorable area.

One thing that is easy to not notice in the catacombs is that if you're fighting in the water, you become diseased and your health will degenerate rapidly. Therefore, it's a good idea to equip a healing skill like healing signet or troll unguent. Also, try to keep the number of monsters you're fighting at the same time as low as possible. On the compass map, there is a circle around your character. This is called the aggro-bubble and any time an enemy (red dot) enters this circle, he sees you and will attack. You can sneak around some enemies by avoiding them or pull enemies to you by using a bow and attacking from as far away as possible.

The catacombs isnt an essential part of the game, you dont need to go in there if you dont want a monk secondary, so if you find that your getting beat everytime leave it until your a higher level, also if your using frenzy you might wanna drop it, especially when you have no monks around.

Also that monk that you were talking about, the one you saw in the catacombs is most likely an NPC, you can only see other real players in outposts unless that are already in your party when you go into an outpost.

Thanks guys! I think I did take out the charm animal skill when I got another axe skill from someone. That explanis why my animal didn't come along with me.

That Monk must be an NPC. I wasn't able to ask for her help. See, I told you I was a noob!

It is my understanding that I can't do anything with my armor until later in the game then correct? Should I hold on to these kit's I got in my inventory or just dump them for now?

The charr armor you found, belonged to the charr who you killed (you monster! Jk). You cannot ever wear that armor. However, you can purchase a salvage kit and use it on the armor to produce crafting materials, which CAN be used to craft armor later on.

When you take up Sir Tydus on his offer to send you through the academy... well, I will try not to give too much away, but only after you do that will you be able to pay for better armor. Til then, it's only collectors armor.

For the record, further on in the game, there are several places you can go to craft higher and higher armor. You can make better armor at these places, but many times the armor at the collectors around there, is higher. So save stuff if ya can.

Sounds like you are in what is referred to as pre-searing, where everything is green and pretty. I would first recommend that you not enter the Academy unless you are at least level 8. When you do you will be in post-searing Ascalon and while your party limit will go up to 4, monsters are more difficult and getting better armor costs gold and materials such as iron, cloth and leather. Make sure that you have at least 50g to pay for your storage that will become available in post-searing. You get materials by using a salvage kit on unwanted weapons and monster armor.

For this part of the game, armor upgrades are available from collectors who will require certain items dropped by monsters. Each collector has only one part of your armor.

For information, you can search and read this site's Q&A section and post your own questions as needed. Another great source on everything GW is guildwiki.org. Right now their site is very slow due to a combination of trying to get their new server installed and Nightfall starting.

The kits you're talking about sound like Salvage items. When you mouse over them does it say Salvage item? You have to buy a salvage kit, and use it by double clicking on the salvage kit then onto the item you want to salvage. You then get the raw materials (like cloth, wood planks, iron ingots etc) that you will need later to craft your armour. You can't use the drops directly as armour.
Once you go through the Academy, you will enter a new area of Ascalon, (don't want to spoil the surprise, so I won't elaborate on that further) where you will be able to upgrade your armour. For now I would collect up the drops and salvage as much as you can.

I'm in the midst of playing GW and WOW, both for the first time. I'm trying to decide which to keep. The more I play GW the more I like it. Any reasons why I should pick GW over WOW? I just want to make sure I've picked the right one. I really don't like the $15/month with WOW. GW also feels more realistic if ya know what I mean. I do like the aspect of just roaming around in WOW though. Hmmmmm....... what else should I know about these games?

I played WoW for 2 years, I obviously liked it, but I am in Guild Wars now.

Guild Wars is a deep game that appears very simple on the surface. You spend huge amounts of time in it but you don't have to spend it all in big chunks. In WoW, after a certain point, the time investment became a little too much to maintain for me. I don't miss the 40 man raids, I only miss the friends that I left behind.

I do miss the more open nature of WoW, but if you think about it most areas were instant death for the young adventurer. In Guild Wars you have the primary story you adventure through and all the myriad of quests that you can take.

Guild Wars takes an understated and elegant approach to loot. There are "hot" items but nothing too earthshaking or god-like in stats. Most trade prices are dictated by the skin of an item often more than anything else. But, with Runes and upgrades weapons and armor can be nicely customized.And being able to Dye nearly everything is nice as well.

Character Level is nearly irrelevant in Guild wars, it's more a matter of how many skills your character can have access to and use effectively.

Generally you won't find yourself being killed in one hit in Guild Wars. Things are toned down and take a balanced approach. I remember my surprise when I was in a fight that lasted several minutes, it was very intense.

Guild Wars has no monthly fee, so when you take a break from it, you aren't paying for it.

PvP is a Guild Wars specialty and it's done very well. The Random Arenas are a blast I look forward to big boy PvP soon after I become more adept.
