I actually saw and got my first dead sword yesterday when helping a guildmate do the Undead quest on the noob island.
The sword is gold, 10/9 zealous, 14^50, and swordsmanship+1 19%, but unfortunately it was only 10-16 dmg or something like that! LOL
As for max dead swords, you need to find high level undead to kill, which yes, you will find in the Desolation.

^_^ i would like to state i was one of the first to get this dead sword on the first day nf came out ^_^ and i got it out side of lair of forgotten located by bone palace etc... happy hunting ^_^

Dead swords can be farmed easily with a 55 Hp monk or any W/Mo combination of your choice.
Get the quest "Destroy the Ungrateful Slaves". Leave from the bone palace take the wurm and procede north to "The Shattered Ravines" here you can prep all your enchants needed for 55ing be sure to let the kind die and you can zone and repeat as needed.
