The Old Black Dye

So i decided to salvage a Superior Vigor rune from a 15k dragon piece dyed pre-NF black. Yea that grayish black good old dye which allowed me to see the designs and contours of the dyed surface. I got the rune but the armor was destroyed. So I bought the same armor piece and a black dye and when I was about to dye it, the preview showed me that it's not the same black as twas used to be. It's too black. Imagine-a-computer-monitor-turned-off-like-black. No visible designs, marks, contours, just pure ffin black. I want the old pre NF black on my armor so itll match the rest.

So my question, is there a formula to make an old, pre-Nightfall black?

Have you tried mixing it with one of the Dye removers... err... grey dyes yet? At least with the new preview system you can try to find one without wasting that black dye...

But trial and error = waste of gold . I'm just wondering if someone has found a formula for the old black dye.

hmm, or how about A.Net putting the old black dye on sale with the label "Vintage Black Dye"?

I think green + purple (or was it orange and purple >.<) worked for some armours.

You can just drag dyes into the dye preview window and it'll show the mix.

I think grey + black or silver + black would make it lighter.

Its probably black+whatever the color of the amour is originally, all armors used to be already dyed before the update, such as the 15k glad was yellow.

There isnt any more trial and error. If you double-click your dyeand click on armor you get a "preview" window with a small image of the item, plus slots along the side for multiple dyes. You can drag as many different colrs or combos as there are slots allowed and see exactly what it will look like on that item. So, since you know you are shooting for some variation of black, buy a black... it own't be a waste of money if you are sure you want that basic color. Then play around with different colors and combos to get what you are looking for.

Silver and black gets very close on my mesmer armor (but it is a bit lighter). Gray and black or silver+black+black might do it. It varies from armor type to armor type, so you gotta experiement yourself. Dye preview window helps alot, so no wasted money.

From my testing it's now impossible to reproduce the old black (or any old dark color combination) regardless of what Anet says.
Even combinations like Black+Black+Black+something just aren't dark at all (on most armors)
Before Nightfall a combination of Black + a Color was exactly between those colors. Now adding Black to a Color makes it only ~~10% darker, and it sucks.

I've made many detailed posts on every dye thread about this serious problem and got no official response yet.

ouch. this sucks. old black was better than the new one. it's like armors were immersed in tar when they are dyed black.

i hear ya!

before NF i crafted a 15k aero skirt (to mix with luxon) and dyed it black. all the white pattern show and stuff. then after NF i saw that theres no ele armors that i liked so i crafted the top. now there no way i can get it to look the same as the bottom, the black dye just covers EVERYTHING and when i try it on the bottom it totaly ruins it

now while i love the new black on most other armors, it totaly ruins some others

ANET, plz give us an option to have the old black! call it something else but bringit back!!!!!!!

I had the same problem with my silver dye. It's darker than the original. I recently bought an extra helmet for weapon change purposes so I could have one helmet with an Axe mastery rune, one with Swordsmanship and one with Hammer mastery in it, and of course the new dye was darker. I ended up getting fed up and just redyed my entire armour to the new silver, but I sure wouldn't mind getting the old colour back. The new silver almost looks grey.

I noticed that with the black too... I was considering changing my dye colour to black, but when I saw how dark it was I decided against it. It took away the beautiful detail of the armour.

You should consider the "waste of gold" BEFORE you salvage your 15k armor...

hehe. well nf gave us the ability to preserve the armor and just retrieve the rune. too bad i got unlucky. if this was pre nightfall, i wont ever think of salvaging sup runes from expensive armors.
