Is It Really The First Guild Wars ?!!
Lord-UWR
I was just going through youtube in school, during my free block, and came upon this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKgmyMuZNdA
If you pay close attention to the video, you can see FDS, Yak's Bend, a 'SAD' version of ascalon armor, and some other GW related material. However, the monsters do not really look much like monsters in GW.
Some of the comments on the video states it is the Alpha/Beta testings of the original GW, (before Anet joined NCSoft). It was said this is the test environment of GW just to test out matters such as damage, combat, and general game mechanics.
There are two problems with the stated theory above
1) I have seen videos from the alpha and beta testing that was made public, and they do not look like that.
2) How did this person get his/her hands on such videos and content? you cannot access really far adventures of the game in a beta testing.
Please help out on identifying its truth.
PERSONALLY, I was like : " NO Freaking WAY THIS IS GUILD WARS!!!"
PS: Now I believe this is the version of GW before the E3 event.

Yeah it is it was the first video that came out. I remembered because I was looking for a new MMO (got tired of Ragnarok online) and I stumble upon that, then I started playing the beta weekends.
Lord-UWR
Really? it really doesn't look anything like GW currently.
It's actually like a replica of WoW, not unexpected, the lead programmer of GW was the lead pogrammer of WoW, and many design team specialists are from blizard too.
BTW, I also quitted RO and RUNESCAPE for GW

Fun blast from the past. ^^
Sidra
Lol... look how bad (and WoW like) the gfx are, weird parties and textures and colors in town. How much it has changed! 0.0
Lord-UWR
Exactly my point !!! Hey if anyone got a link to a full gallery or video, good quality prefered, can you post it here?
Former Ruling
Its REALLLLLLLLL Old Alpha testing, like before the "public" even had beta testing weekends.
Shadowfox1125
Jeez, this is even before BWEs..
DigitalForm
Yeah it is really GW. I used to have the issue of GamePro where the first pictures were shown. I remember it because of the whole "free gameplay" thing.

Alpha FTW. That is the alpha of Guild Wars, lol. And EARLY Beta, before the current engine was put in place. Ah, memories.

Isn't just inspiring how the graphics for GW have matured SO much!!??
Compared to many current RPGs, GW still has some of the MOST intense, detailed and realistic graphic creations around.
honestly 50% of WHY i play GW, is the environment. The landscapes and attention to detail in so many aspects of this game i just LOVE!...
I came barely too late for the alpha/beta testing, but i sure as heck remember the vids. LOL nice find!
cheers!

Curse You
That video clearly shows that Guild Wars was made in part by some of the creators of WoW.
I love how GW is made to look as real as possible (ignoring the levitation of people and plants).

Kha
It makes me miss Beta
SPIRIT OF THE SEA
it was before they hired the curretn head dsigner
natuxatu
It actually looks kinda fun lol.. but maybe that's because i like Guild Wars? hehe
Knightsaber Sith
Makes me think of the capes from beta that looked like bibs.
DL Lorre
O_O thsat video made me go "Look its WoW" ut its not (5 months of playing gw at this point)
fallot
Proof that ANet devs sold their souls to the devil at some point. No way you can jump from that piece of crap to the current game.
Aphraelyn
Amazing difference though =P They must've done lots of reworking with those stuff =/
TiNkLeR
LOL, agreed fallot.
The Muffen Man
Did you guys notice one of the warriors wielding a Colossal Scimitar lol.
VGJustice
The only thing more amazing than the difference in graffics from then to now is the horrendous stupidity in the comments on that video :P
Sekkira
This wasn't just before the BWE, it was before the WPE in October 2004 and the E34E event, the first public viewing of GW in early 2004.
Vandal2k6
Funny thing is ...
http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/guildw...wars&page=1 4
Those shots of the early GW is more or less exactly how WoW looks now. 0.o

Phaern Majes
Meh its before I started playing. I started about a month after the betas stopped.
Gorebrex
Saw video, and my first thought was WOW! Pretty bad, happy as hell GW doesnt look like that now.
Count to Potato
so long ago, seems ancient
Cataclysm
It looks like WoW... I'm glad they upped it to more than 12 polys per char.
Traveller
I can't believe how many people are just insisting that this isn't Guild Wars in the comment part of the video. GW has definately evolved a lot since then, I for one am glad they got rid of the cartoony graphics and went for the more realistic-looking environments.
Memnon
I've seen a video like this before and it still amazes me how big the difference is between the Alpha test and the Beta Public tests (which is when I started playing).
If the Anet devs did sell their souls, it was worth it!

They still need to optimize the texture loadtimes imo. Kamadan = 20-40 seconds on a 1 gig, 3.0 intel, 256vram.
Addone_Abaddon
why do those graphics look quite trendy to me?

May 2004 maybe?
Contempt
Am I the only one who thinks it looked better back then?
Cybergasm
Memories...
bhavv
So basically, WoW = GW alpha? lol.
Crispie
I think the biggest difference would be the "glow effect" that was added later on.
Priest Of Sin
O_O
words fail me....

Very Neat, It is amazing how the Classics can bring people together.
Would you like Anet to put a GW "classic" optional play, just for the 'WoW' version of it?
