Video Interview: Possible Chapter 4 Info - Aug. '07, Aztech/Mayans
Jeff Highwind
Aww, no Indiana Jones adventures for me?
arcady
I don't know. Half the threads here are on "I finished Nightfall in 3.2 seconds after buying it, I'm bored now, Anet sux for not having more content ready yet..."
So... a chapter every 6 months may be too slow for at least a notable faction of these forum communities...
I could deal with a slower pace, but then I never rush anything save for the first mission of Nightfall when fearing it was going to be a repeat of Factions... Otherwise, I'm one of those players who is content to wander around a zone taking screenshots and pausing to plan and pick flowers between each group of critters in a zone rather than rushing to kill them all.
I'll finish Nightfall in maybe a year...

Y'know? A transcript would be really helpful! I'm still puzzling about the speaker and trying to figure out if he's stating things, or speculating on things, or saying some are facts and some are extrapolations.
And to be honest, some of what he says would make me pretty happy as a player.

Yea he basicly says that chapter 4 will be released in Augest 07 and will have the theme of Aztech and Mayans, he also says that he is not allowed to say much about chapter 4. The interviewer says the he is from "easy interactive" as stated before.

--- we are standing here with michel (SP?) from easy interactive (sp?), and we're going to ask him some questions about the latest game from arena net: Guildwars nightfall ---
--- the game refines the guildwars formula and adds some stuff, but is it suitable for new players? >> yeah, it's "somewhat like" (too dutch ) certain that you don't need the first two parts to "say so" enjoy guildwars. So you could start with nightfall. But we notice that people who buy nightfall cling to the first two parts ---
--- you just have to look around and you see it, we are being trown to death with online games, so why do we need to play guild wars? >>> I think, i think that is visa-versa. guildwars is somewhat like the standart, together with world of warcraft. that are THE two games who are carrying the genre. we ARE seeing that there are coming more MMO's, but i have to say they aren't allways succesful, and it's visa-versa, what do they add to the genre? The nice thing about guildwars is that its graphical part is very spectacular and that the game is fitting good together and that you don't have the stress of an abbonement and that you can play for free. >>> that is the example that guildwars doesn't have a montly fee. >>> i have to say that there aren't many of that kind and i think that guildwars will be quite unique in that and in the future all games will work with montly fee's (i don't think he is talking about guildwars) ---
--- Is there something you want to say about the coming chapter? >>> certainly.. ehh.. 4 will come out in august... so uhh.. it's so that untill now we released 1 in the first year and in the second year 2 and this year there will be one new part... not 2 but 1.. >>> can you say something about it?>>> uuhm.... there is something known about it but i don't may say much about but, but , uuuhm.. what i can say (there was a dutch saying in there) this part will MAYBE have something to do with the aztecs, maya's and in that surroundings.. to say so.. >>> ok, now i what to thank you for this short but powerfull interview and that you have come to here, this was mike, together with michel on the gameplay....----
------ this is done out of my head, so there may be some grammatical and other errors in it (A) ---------

edit: exiled beat me to it I'll keep mine up too, that way if you combine the two you pretty much have an accurate transcipt
Transcript, some stuff might get lost in translation (and switching between tabs). My English is a lot better when I'm simply typing English and not translating stuff, but here you go.
Interviewer = Maarten
Michel = Michel
Maarten: We're here with Michel from Easy Interactive and we're going to ask him a few questions about the newest game by ArenaNet and NCSoft, Guild Wars Nigthfall.
Maarten: The game refines the Guild Wars formula and adds a lot to it. But is it suited for new players?
Michel: It's made the way that you don´t need the first two chapters to enjoy Guild Wars, so you can start with Nigthfall. We do notice that people who buy Nigthfall fall back to the first two chapters.
Maarten: If you look around we get beated to death with MMO's and online games, why should we play Guild Wars?
Michel: I think it's the other way around. Guild Wars is the standard, together with World of Warcraft. These two games are really the games that carry the genre. We're also seeing that there are a lot of MMO's coming, most of which aren't succesfull and you should say, what do they add to the genre? The good thing about Guild Wars are the spectacular graphics and it's good as a game. Another important thing is that you don´t have a monthly fee.
Maarten: It's very remarkable that guild wars doesn't have a monthly fee.
Michel: Guild Wars will probably be unique in this. I predict that in the future almost all games will have a monthly fee.
Maarten: Any more information about a future expension?
Michel: Yes there is, chapter 4 will be released in August. So far the first year there has been one chapter, last year two and next year one again.
Maarten: Any more you know, any more you can tell us?
Michel: I do know more about it, but I'm not allowed to tell too much. I can give a small sneak peak though that, maybe, this chapter could have more to do with Aztecs/Mayas and in that setting something will go on, but
Maarten: Ok, I know enough. Thanks for coming, this was Mike for Game Village together with Michel at the Gameplay.
He did get a little nervous when starting about chapter four and the word "maybe" was dropped a lot.

One chapter? Man =\
As a PvP-er I could really care less about completing the story. The more skills and innovative PvP options, the better for me! As it is, it looks like I'm going to be very bored for six months starting in April...
But unfortunately for me, Anet has to appeal to the majority, and the vast majority of GW players are PvE-ers...so while they max out their titles and get their 15k/FoW armor and try to come up with new ways to play harder areas, I'll be stuck doing something else. Like playing Oblivion, or Zelda: Twilight Princess.

I'm very supportive of a single release in 2007. If Anet is doing well enough to afford some flexibility with their scheduling, there's certainly plenty of content to keep the average player engaged. Personally, I was somewhat relieved to hear that the next release could be in Aug '07, rather than five months from now.
xBakox
Sounds interesting. I rather it North American (native american sorta deal) or Norse themed, but Aztec sounds cool.
Personally I'm glad they arent sticking to 2 campaigns a year. I felt that it really lessened the experience of NF and Factions because they only developed it for a year. They could have gone much further then they had.
Plus it means a few free updates along the way .

i don't understand why people would rather have 'more time to finish up chapters 1-3 before 4 comes out'. Do you guys realize that even if Ch4 came out tomorrow, you could buy it/play it whenever you wanted afterwards? Some of us love new content whenever possible...

U rock Gaile! I like the six months thing =( .. keeps me playing.. but so does big update like on friday =D

I rather take a small break for awhile and get a great game that has no flaws ( I know, its just a wish) and is worth playing through more then 1-2 times.
So you love new content whenever possible. I do too, though I like new GOOD content whenever possible, and if that means a few more months then I'll sit tight. Besides we get a new update soon with more content and maybe they will even add some between the next chapter and that long summer.

I would very much be in favor of waiting 3 or 4 more months (or even a year) to have another release of Nightfall-quality in terms of new innovations like heroes, insignia system, etc. Maybe if we had to wait a year, we could finally get some updated trading system options... maybe...

If it's an overall better game, it's still the same the second, third, and fourth times through.
That's why I like the 2-chapters-per-year policy.

As there are already two translations I'm gonna skip that part. Just want to mention he's stating things imo. He uses a few times 'maybe' when it comes to the Aztec part yes (he doesn't want to tell too much), but he clearly states there are things known about chapter 4. This is wonderful news. August seems quite far away though. But I can understand they had to take it a bit slower. Gaile already mentionned it were kinda busy times lately. I prefer them taking a bit more time and come up with a 'finished' product. We don't want the devs to be overworked and end up in some kinda midlife crisis.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was picked up because he said he wasn't who he is.

Heh Inde, I told you it was Easy, not NC
Someone posted a link to a page of information on Easy Interactive, which I looked at before... they are Dutch 'publishing partners' of NCsoft and have released at least one of the three chapters (Guild Wars: Factions) in the Netherlands. And this Michel has a senior position in the company.
So, it's not too hard to imagine the following set up:
ArenaNet employee tells NCsoft employee tells Easy Interactive employee tells PC Gameplay guy (the interviewer).
Of course, in a chain like this information may be distorted, but things as straightforward as release date and overall theme are unlikely to be.

Anyone that is familiar with the case Wizards of the Coast vs Mr. Drutter (aka known as Rancored Elf) knows what I mean.
The company has interests to not have information leak away too early, for several reasons. A copy-paste of the interesting reasons why a company rather does not want to leak information too early. I made a few edits in it to make it readable for the GW audiance. the edits are marked by '~'.

We've spent a great deal of time and energy to figure out how to promote a set. When we preview ~something~, we've taken many hours to figure out exactly what we want to show, why we want to show it, what it hints at, what cool things it doesn't show. The average poster of leaked information doesn't do that, partially because he doesn't have the full information and partially because he's not motivated to care. Releasing information on unreleased sets is one of the most important pieces of marketing we do.
When a ~skill~ is leaked it has an impact. Hours of work (on ~website~ and elsewhere) are wasted. Magazine and online sites are deprived revenue because exclusive previews they were promised are undercut. R&D watches quality sets be maligned because information is inaccurate or comes from an outdated file. Now, maybe you don't care about any of this. But we have to. This is our business. These are our employees and our professional relationships. And first impressions do affect sales. Not worrying about these things would be, quite frankly, negligence. We care deeply about this issue because we have to. This is what we do. While ~GuildWars~ is a game to all of you, to us it's a business and we have to treat it as such. This information is our information and we have the right to do with it what we want. That's what this boils down to: We have the right to protect our property. <snip> And that's only half the problem. We don't want players seeing material until it's finished. Historically, sets at this point in development have not just changed ~skills~, not just changed mechanics, they've changed themes. They've changed focus. It's one thing for players to see playtest ~skills~ after a set's release, because then they get to see them in context. They already understand what the finished product is. But to have your first glimpse be a card that will go through numerous iterations and still might not even make it into the set, is about a bad first impression as we could possibly make. |

I reckon this is probably another leaked info incident, worse than this one. Gaile tried to hush it up back then, but it turned out that everything EBgames told was correct, to the last detail. Looks like they got the official info after all.
I guess Mr. Michael from Easy Interactive will get some pretty angry phonecalls from NCsoft and ANet, and the cooperation may come to an abrupt end.

I give PCG the benefit of doubt. I also believe what Gaile says is true; in a very Spinmeister kind of way. A list of what Anet has NOT announced does not discredit the op. His whole point is the inofficial rumor thing. The date thing also does not throw me off. So what if Anet has no final internal date, neither do the Duke Nukem guys.
Anyway, by tomorrow the whole thing will be buried deeply under a pile of Elite-Mission news. Until some Mexican forum user snaps a hidden paperazzi shot of Jeff Strain in an Aztech tomb, wielding a scrfificial knife only intented for alpha testing the new Heroes' Ascent game mechanic.

Before anyone gets more excited, keep in mind we don't know where Mr. Michel got his info. Was it material given to Easy Interactive? Was it something he saw visiting NC Soft or ANet offices? Is the August date for the chapter release or the elite mission release? Is the setting info for Chap 4 or 5? After all, they have started working on 5 and would be having many discussions about settings.
Lot's of questions and there will be no more answers from Mr. Michel. His company has probably been slapped with a gag order, while NC Soft decides whether or not to sue them for contract non-disclosure violations.

Funny how quickly people change their tune. When I said a while ago that the 6 month gap wasn't written in stone I was shot down with people explaining how the "whole premise" of guild wars was a new chapter every 6 months.

So. To add rumor to rumor, one of the two new characters will be an archaeologist. His primary weapon will be a bullwhip. Imagine you are in the middle of a fight and you hear the crack of the whip. That could get your attention.

ah speculation again
<grabs crystal ball out from under table>
would be really nice to have more than 6 months to finish nf with my 8 toons.
might actually see myself buying the next chapter if they did (hint hint gaile).
for the 'bored' amongst us, might give us a breather so we dont feel we must try this right away. and then not be rushed and then maybe not be bored???
mayan might be nice, would rather have snow (as long as I am not required to shovel it). but seeing as I probably wont buy another chapter (esp if its rushed, and with the factions team making it......... )
<returns crystal ball back under table>
and the answer to 'you can just wait and get the next chapter when you finish'---uhm, lots of people are now complaining about not being able to find the ce from chapter 1... if we wait we not might not be able to buy the chapter when we get around to finishing the one we are on.....and if you buy it right away, you MUST put it on your computer and then test it....and then you are sucked into playing it. so the reasoning 'dont buy it until you are ready' doesnt really work. or thats my theory at least. (and just think about it, when was the last time you waited to open say your birthday presents? or now with xmas close at hand.....why dont you wait until july to open that gift ok?)
