What's up with that?

You walked from an area that had a max party size of 8 to an area with a max party size of 6. I do that all the time.

And you stopped in at Temple of the Ages, the only place in that area with a max party size of 8

Last time I did that, I had gone from Lion's Arch to Kamadan via the quest. Party of 6 in an area designed for 4. You could do the same thing from Kaineng Center to Kamadan and have a party of 8.

So, what happens when you zone out - or enter the Sanctum Cay mission with more than 6 ?

One of two things happens.

Either it tells you "Party size invalid" or some such and you can't play until the party size is correct, or you play with >6 people.

Its indeed very simple, the other day I just ran from ToA with only heroes and henchies to ascalon, but for some strange reasing instead of a party of 8/4 it still was reduced to 6/4

I remember a run one time, starting from ToA --> Riverside province, then we did all the missions up to ascention with a group of 8. We just flew through the missions. Not sure it's still possible though, with the number of things ANet has changed recently.

You can do Riverside Province with party of 8 for example if you walk from ToA. It probably works for other missions as well. I know this worked only a while back, when I did it with SF ele, MM and SS heroes. It was... unbalanced.

If a certain henchie isn't available when you enter an outpost, then it's removed from party. So, 7/6 means you had a party of 8, but one of henchies is not available in that area and was removed. Same for the ascalon thing.

It is a known bug that they try to fix but don't succeed all the time. I have done various runs from Ascalon to Sanctum Cay, stopping at TOA to go back to Ascalon to get more players. I used to do this run before they fixed the boat sequence in the end of the Sanctum Cay mission which I would run also.
I had 7 players all under lvl 5 in one group. Then just for fun I ran them all to all the Desert towns at no charge. Due to A-Net and NC-Soft fixing the boat sequence that is no longer possible as you will have to fight the horde trying to kill the priest guy. I have seen 2 man teams both starting at Ascalon and meeting in TOA just to be able to have 2 high lvl players just for the end sequence of the Sanctum Cay mission. So someone has found a way to do that mission still by running but I can't use my ranger anymore.

I'm curious about that too. The horde you fight is pretty easy, but I dont' know how it's possible to run the mission without protecting the guy who summons the boat. I don't imagine the baddies can be lured away either.
