Possible Bug: Cannot upgrade bonus weapons?
Moa Bird Cultist
The title says it all. Bonus items like the Spiritbinder et al are refusing to take upgrades. Anyone else noticed this?
Here's a list of the items I'm aware of that aren't accepting upgrades but should:
- Insightful Spiritbinder *
- Poisonous Dragon Fangs of Dagger Mastery
- Fiery Sunspear of Shelter - (Fiery is an inherent mod and therefore could never be changed.)
- Icy Soulbreaker of Enchanting - (Icy functions the same way as above.)
- Poisonous Nevermore Flatbow *
- Sundering Rhino's Charge *
- Insightful Soul Shrieker *
Thats seven of the bonus weapons that should take upgrades. Of these seven, the four marked with an asterisk are not pre-equipped with a suffix of any kind, making the weilder at a disadvantage. Which is a shame, because apart from anything else, a good few of these are some of the best looking items in the game, (The Nevermore Flatbow, Soul Shrieker and Soulbreaker are all awesome looking items in my view.)

MegaMouse
Bonus items that you get from the CE editions or even the GOTY editions cannot be upgraded. These weapons were never meant to be upgraded. You will find other weapons that cannot be upgraded within the game also (Greens cannot be upgraded and certian collector weapons also). This is how it is supposed to be.

My GotY edition weapons could have mods added to them if there wasn't one there.
Example: The Rhino Hammer. (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Rhino%27s_Charge)

sorry mega but that is not true ive been using my dragon fangs for quite awhile now with a shocking upgrade instead of the normal poison one
Savio
Preorder weapons were previously upgradable until the release of Nightfall.
Burton2000
You cant be serious... I was just about to use my preorder sunspear as I bought a +30 mod to replace the crappy armour one and now you say you can't change its mods!! Grrr
Moa Bird Cultist
@ Megamouse: Bonus weapons always used to be upgradeable
@ Savio: I didnt know that - one of their undocumented nerfs?
@ ArenaNet: Now that you've done this, when are you going to balance the Spiritbinder so that it isnt inferior to every other bonus weapon out there?
By that, I mean add a profession specific staff wrapping of mastery - it's only fair now.

It might have something to do with making the weapons compatible with the new inscriptions.
But yeah, I'm pretty peeved at this for now -_-

before the release of NF I was able to upgrade my preorder bonus items at will. I still have an Ithas Bow with +5 armor and poisonous string on my ranger, however it's impossible to recreate said item now. Same applies for the Spiritbinder my rit has... 20% longer enchantments were added before NF, nowadays it's impossible to put anything on it. Said staff still does the dime for caster heros thou'........
weaver keras
I actually modded my Rit. Pre-order staff with a +5 ene. & +29 health, I guess i got lucky.
Contempt
Thats a pretty lame nerf... I was planning on adding +30 to my Nevermore Flatbow, guess not now.
Sidra
Well... at least I retained my modded dragon fangs from before this seemingly pointless and anoying update. My soulbreaker is crying out for a removal of it's icy prison

I have never been told that we intended to make Bonus Items non-upgradeable. It may be something that we did mean to do, or it could be a glitch. I will be happy to ask about this and I'm sure if this was intended I can learn why, and if it was not intended, we will fix it.
Thanks for pointing out the question.

Sable Phoenix
I really hope it was not intended; I'd love to switch out the Inscription on my Soulbreaker one that gives +5 energy instead.
Drop of Fear
both nevermore bow and rhino hammer lose all their reason to exist if u cant add a +5 armor or 30hp upgrade
Savio
I presume the inability to upgrade bonus weapons is a side effect from when they were made unsalvagable - the update before Nightfall's release had accidentally made bonus weapons salvagable. The fix probably prevented all modification of bonus items, including the ability to upgrade them.

I hope this is only an overlooked glitch/mistake.
The Soul Breaker is easily the best Scythe skin in the game.

I think this is it. Otherwise people would have salvaged the Serrated Shield for its +30 HP handle, Nevermore Bow and Sundering Rhino Hammer for 15^50 and 20/20 Sundering and so on.
Before Nightfall you could add the "missing" upgrade to these items (mostly the +AL/HP grip), but you could not change the already existing ones: E.g. you could not replace the Poisonous string of the Nevermore Flatbow or the Sundering of the Rhino Hammer.
Bonus items are very useful for Heroes: Most of my Kosses use the Serrated Shield.
lamblamlmab
If you still got old bonus weapons from before Nightfall came out they still can be modded. So don't get rid of them.
Moa Bird Cultist
Thats an interesting fact, but it doesn't help the 99% of people who are using bonus weapons to outfit their heroes - that being probably the biggest issue here, although I do want to put a spear grip of enchanting on my ritualist's sunspear atm
Btw, thanks for picking up on this, Gaile, I'm sure you can understand how annoying this is.

Sweet. If this can be fixed I can keep using my soulbreaker. I worried I'd have to use one of the other scythe skins.
Now only if I could dye the handle.

As of the update on 06 -12 - 2006, this still hasnt been fixed. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Still no word? Was hoping we could find somthing out by now. Heres a little bump just in case it got lost.

EDIT - The reward for the Villany of galrath that is.

Please, can we get an answer?

When they released NF, if you had previously added Bonus items in your bags, you could salvage the mod off of them.
I salvaged a few 20% longer enchant mods for the scythe and made some nice money

Most people are aware of the salvage bug - I stumbled upon it by complete accident myself, but being the honourable soul I am, I didn't make any money from it
Still, the problem persists, (if it is a problem,) and has done so for the past 46 days. It is something that needs to be addressed, one way or another. Either, the "Problem should be fixed," or "Sufficient logical reasoning should be given for the locking of bonus weapons."
Gaile, I know you're busy, PR isn't an easy job at all, and I know all about being rushed off your feet
But I and everyone else aware of this, would greatly appreciate any extra info you can share with us, because I don't know about everyone else, but this is something that is going to be stuck in my mind now until I know something more. Stuck in my head, just like a dodgy, cheesy Christmas pop song

Yeah I understand how it can be too thats why I've been trying to keep this thread bumped. Give Gaile plenty of time to get the info and share it with us without having to hunt for the thread.

This was discussed last night during Gaile's visit to Kamadan. At first, she commented that salvaging mods from an infinite supply of weapons was "cheese", we clarified that we didn't want to salvage - only to modify the weapons. She understood this, took a note, and presumably will forward the request to the devs. I wouldn't expect anything in the immediate near future since this was midnight friday night for her, but I think in time we will be able to mod these weapons once again.

I just experienced another problem.
Before Nightfall, we could not drop these items or put them in a trade window.
But we could upgrade them and put them in the storage box.
So I upgraded a Sundering Rhino Charge Hammer with a 30 HP grip and put it in the storage after use (Bunny Thumper).
Then I logged in with a mule and stored it on this char.
Now... you can no longer put it into storage. So my mule can no longer give back the upgraded Hammer to my Ranger.

Chop, it seems the new salvage system was designed without taking items like these into account properly. The total lockdown of the bonus weapons was likely a temporary fix to prevent endless salvaging of these items for their mods. What bugs me is that a whole month after the issue was acknowledged by Gaile, there has been nothing but complete and utter silence on the subject from Anet. What with this and the PvP mods issues going unresolved for 3 months now, one has to wonder if they actually plan to fix it at all...
Oh and, I experienced something similar to Longasc myself, but it was the weapons that come with heroes. (thought I'd steal Morgahn's shield to use on my paragon, hah! No such luck.
EDIT - I updated the original post with a list of items that are affected. If I've missed any, post em up and I'll update the list accordingly.

Please fix this and while you're at it make the Prophesies preorder items useful.

WetWookie
The american prophesies preorders were wierd. Like the Ithas bow you could upgrade the string but not the grip. Also, nothing is max damage and they all have odd requirements like a req 10 in one attribute to do full (non-max) damage and an aditional 8 in another atribute to get some armor bonus or energy bonus. What it comes down to is that by the time you have the attribute points to use the item you are already using other max damage items.

I was a bit miffed when I couldn't change the Icy mod on my Soulbreaker to Zealous. Hopefully, this is just some unintentional mistake on ANets part.
