What is the best type of bow (short, long, flat, horn) and in what situations?

I'm a bit lazy today to dig out the link, but there's an article on Wiki about specifically which bows have which attributes, etc.

Most of the time (PvE) I use
- Recurve for interrupts
- Flatbow combined with Favorable Winds / Read the Wind (higher refire rate)
I do use a long bow sometimes (not that often, most for pulling with non-ranger characters).
Hardly ever use the short bow (just don't like being so close to the enemy).
I use vampiric bow strings most for the additional damage (+5).
Depending on situation and skills poison or cripple string. The latter only on recurve (more chance to hit).
Sometimes a Zealous when i have lower Expertice to run higher Wilderness Survival.
This covers about 95% of my PvE needs.
Depending on the enemies and group setup I can switch to various elemental strings, but that is very conditional.

well im a ranger/warrior, and im raising marks, wilderness, beast, and tactics
so should i use an interrupt recurve or a drago's flatbow for basic PvE?

like, the_jos, I like flatbows/recurve bows. I also love hornbows, unconditionally, for some random reason unknown to me. They're... just... so... cool.
XvArchonvX
Flatbows: If you use Read the Wind or Favorable Winds, a flatbow will give you the best refire, the lowest arc and the longest range possible. With no IAS, a Flatbow will provide the best dps using Barrage, but you won't want to do so without Fav winds around.
Longbow: A good all around choice for PvE imo. The refire rate and flight time is medium, but the long range is very helpful in maintaining control of a large area.
Recurve: A good all around choice for PvP imo. The refire rate is medium and the range is medium, but the quick flight time will help make sure shots hit enemies that are often moving, such as in PvP. It is also a good bow for a general interupt build due to the excellent flight speed.
Hornbow: It was used in Spike Builds since it has an innate 10% armor penetration, but the flight, range, and refire rate are all pretty sad compared to other choices. However, with an IAS it has been found that Barrage with a hornbow produces the best dps possible of all bows under the same circumstances. For this reason, I tend to use a hornbow when running a flail + barrage build.
Shortbow: This is the bow of choice for builds such as Choking Gas + Practiced Stance since it has the maximum refire rate like the flatbow. The flight time is the same as a longbow and horn bow, but it has a short range, so flight time is not a very big factor here. This bow is generally suited best for builds that rely on rapid firing.
That's my 2 cents at least.

Recurve or Shortbow 99% of the time, unless you're pulling in which you can use a Longbow. A Recurve is just about the best compromise of every bow in my opinion and a fantastic bow for interrupts.
Jeff Highwind
I use Longbows for Barrage and ToPK Runs and Recurves for EVERYTHING Else. I used a Hornbow for a while but I was not a fan of the arrow speed.

On a side-note, I find the theory "range over (almost) anything" flawed ("we are range-r so take a long/flatbow"). You're not much more in danger with a short bow than with a long ranged bow. I almost exclusively use a vamp shortbow on my new ranger and so far I still have 0 death after almost 2 campaigns completed... Really, the range may help but it's not everything.

Personally though, I don't feel that a Longbow is an effective choice at all in PvE. If you absolutely needed the Range (for pulling, hitting targets outside aggro/spell range, etc) then a flatbow can fill that role perfectly well. While you are limited to using RtW (or FW) that's hardly sacrificing anything. If I was planning on using anything other than RtW than I'd plan on bringing my shortbow, because (as MAD said) even at shortbow range, you've plenty of room to avoid damage. The battle is usually brougth within your aggro range anyway, and most maximum distance actions are before you initiate an engagement (for me at least).
So imho, Flatbow or Shortbow for PvE (they can easily fill any role you put to them), Recurve for most PvP (with a flatbow for distance shots), Hornbow for Quickshot-esqe or Barrage + Flail builds, and Longbow...Never.

^ A solid template to start with is something like:
1.) Preperation (in this case Read the Wind)
2.) Attack Skill
3.) Interrupt
4.) Evasion Stance
5.) Self Heal (or you can opt to drop the self heal like I do)
6.-7.) Flex
8.) Ressurection Skill
For 6 and 7 you can bring any number of skills. Personally I prefer Throw Dirt, another interrupt or an attack skill that applies a condition (ie... screaming shot.) But anything from traps to hex/condition removal are fair game in those two slots. An IAS stance is something that should also be considered (since you are playing a /Warrior) either flurry, frenzy or Flail fit that ticket, and have a considerable increase in damage output.

Unless you are running barrage or plan to be grouped with several rangers, I would suggest you stick with Read the Winds. If you go R/W, then flurry or frenzy work well. Flurry may reduce your damage, but it only reduces your base damage from your weapon, while your bonus damage from preps and skills stays the same. Frenzy can allow greater damage, but be sure to have another stance to activate in order to cancel frenzy if you come under fire.

so how bout this?
marks, wilderness, beast, and tactics
o and by the way, should i exclude one of those 4 attributes cuz i think four is too much...i need marks and wilderness... beast for pet... i was thinking tactics for something like heal sig idk help plz!

savage shot
dryders defenses(im not raising expertise, if i should, tell me)

If you have Unguent you do NOT need Healing Signet as well. I would say drop Tactics because it's hard enough splitting between 3 attributes. Prepared Shot is nice, if you max out WS at 16 you get good energy return AND a powerful Unguent if in your skillbar. If anything, try to keep Expertise at a 9 or 10(rune helps), with Prepared Shot you are saving energy to gain it.
Simple Rule about Beast Mastery: Unless you dedicate your bar to BM skills or are Thumper, don't invest in it.
Try somthing like this:
Marks 12+3+1
WS 9+1
Expertise 9+1
Kindle/Ignite Arrows
Prepared Shot*
Forked Arrow (Marks req but doesn't rely on Marks)
Savage Shot (DPS Interrupt)
Whirling Def
Throw Dirt or Frenzy (Whirling Def can be used as Cancel Stance)
Unguent

I would elaborate more but I am in the middle of a Gerontology review for my final.

I would agree with Jeff, but would also point out that you will likely want to choose Whirling Defenses over Dryder's. A rule of thumb for most rangers in standard builds, such as has been reccomended by those here, is to have at least 9 points in expertise in order to be able to afford to run the build effectively.
One point I would disagree with on Jeff is against the choice of Ignite Arrows, since the skill can cause enemies to flee from the AoE effect. While the AoE effect can be used to one's advantage, it is hard to control it when every attack you deal with the prep active will trigger it.
I would also reccomend going with Read the Winds and a flatbow over Kindle Arrows, but that point is debatable. Kindle Arrows does elemental damage and therefore will be reduced by higher AL levels, but RtW's damage bonus, while lower, is armor ignoring. While neither prep clearly dominates in superiority imo, RtW does allow a flatbow to be used effectively, which can be very handy.

I saw this problem right away Archonv and I am glad you did. I sometimes swap out Kindle for Ignite speficially for Rangers since Kindle makes arrows Fire Element instead of standard Piercing.
And the AoE Scatter is nice for dealing with PvE Mobs. I use Firestorm and Ignite Arrows SPECIFICALLY to clear War or Sin aggros from my precious squishies.

i think burning shot is beter for this build than prepared shot, but idk
BA + Screaming Shot - negative 10 hp pips which i believe is max
i edited it so i have 14 marks for 4 seconds burning and 14 WS for +10 pips regen for unguent
8,1 for expertise cuz thats what u all say lol
so wadya guys think?

I would pump up Marksmanship to 16 and if you're only putting those points into Wilderness Survival for Trolls, raise Expertise to 13 for another breakpoint instead. Then put the rest of your points into WS.

I agree.
Troll Ungent is, imho, a poor combat self-heal. It's purpose fits more along the lines of decreasing down time between skirmishes or premptive healing than an emergancy health boost. A few points in WS is more than enough for Troll.

In all practical purposes in PvE. You really need only 3 types of bows.
1- Vamp Horn Bow for Barrage
2- Long Bow for Pulling
2- Recurve Bow (i use eternal bow which is recurve) - for everything else..
you gotta love the recurve bow it is the most accurate because of the fast arrow speed and relatively fast refire rate. The bow is the best for interupting and running all the crazy builds for relm of torment like Broadhead Arrow...
... as far as the mod you really dont need a 20/20 or anything like that anything work fine... If you can't get perfect mods or anything or are running broke.. you can always get the rotwin recurve bow for relatively cheap.

Well let me put my 2 cents in here too
The bows is what u want it to be. I finished both Prophesies and Factions with just my Dragos bow (still love it) but I also ended up starting to collect bows, so I basically have a bow for any type of situation you can think of. So I would change bows according to builds, for poisoning I would use either a flatbow or a Recurve bow with a poison mod, for crip shot build I would use a bow with a cripling mod etc.
I love all type of bows, personally for me I'm not too fond on the vamp bows, yes its great for barrage ereas but for single targets the degen isnt something I want seeing as I dont ever use mending or anything like that on a ranger.
Your build on the top of this page looks good, but builds are like anything else in this game "personal preferance" I have a lot of different builds for different ereas/enemies eg. some enemies are less resistant against fire than others.
I would however agree with most of the replies on here stating that you could easily run PvE with a Flat/Horn/Recurve
Hope this helps

Ok, why would you say that flatbows have better DPS for barrage? The only bow with a damage difference is hornbows! And why would you use an IAS for Barrage? It makes no difference to your DPS since it's a skill and at least in the considerable amount of time I've used Barrage, I usually just spam the @*(% out of it.
Sophitia Leafblade
I find that longbows are best for Range(pulling), Shortbows are best for attack speed(when mobbed), hornbows are best for damage(spiking) and Recurve bows are kinda somewhere in the middle(for general use)

Actually, IAS does effect barrage and there is a difference between bow types while using barrage.
To simplify, a flatbow will fire off more barrages in the same amount of time than a hornbow, which completely negates the armor penetration unless under the effects of an IAS, in which case a Hornbow is superiour.

Yea I use Lightning Reflexes all the time with Barrage. Pulls so much damage out of my Forgotten Longbow than if I diddn't have it.

Yes. There are 2 types of bow attacks: bow attacks with a casting time (interupts, quickshot, needling shot), and bow attacks without (most of the attacks, including barrage). The attacks of the second category use the refire rate of the bow. Barrage recharges in 1 second, but you can't use it every seconds. When you click those skills, they start glowing, as when you click a skill while you're already using another one. The duration of this delay corresponds to the refire rate of your bow. It can be decreased by skills like Faintheartedness or increased either in picking a bow with refiring faster or with IAS skills like flail, flury, frenzy, etc. If it was possible to increase your refire rate to less than 1 sec (it's not), then barrage would become unavailable till it's recharged. But it's not so instead it will use the refire rate of your bow.
However, the skills of the first category (with a casting time) ignore the refire rate of the bow. Actually the description of those skills is wrong, as it takes longer than the casting time to shoot an arrow, but it's still faster than a normal attack. Quickshot for example has a refire rate of 1.76 secs (34 arrows per minute), Needling Shot a refire rate of 1.15 secs (52 arrows per minute). Still, IAS skills stack with those attacks. Quicksot + flail increase your refire rate to 1 arrow every 1.33 secs (40 per minute), Needling Shot + flail = 1 arrow per second. That's why I said earlier hornbows were the best bows with those skills (especially with RtW) has their slow refire rate is ignored by those skills.
I hope it's clear...

Yea, for this reason getting hexed with Faintheartedness while using a barrage build can feel like scraping your teeth on a chalkboard.

Flatbows for taking out spellcasters (more DPS than a longbow).
Short bows for interrupting and most damage.
Recurve is a nice mix out of the flatbow and a shortbow (bigger range than the shortbow and a high refire rate). Good in PvP and for interrupts.
Hornbow for the most damage in combination with FW/Read the wind. Mursaat ftw
No need for longbows.

I have an obscene amount of bows.
For general crip shot I have a rotwings, and now I need to get a +5 recurve with a crippling mod.
Then there's the 15^50 barbed recurve for melandru's or barbed arrows builds.
the vampiric shortbow for general damage.
the vamp hornbow for barrage, and ranger spike.
the 20/20 longbow for pulling, ranger spike.
the weird quest reward longbow, and a poisonous flatbow for fow farming.
Then there's the hammers...
It's really, really hard to keep a ranger pvp ready, so If I could, I'd uncustomize all my bows and just keep proper bows for barraging, and a staff for trapping, because otherwise ranger's uses are limited for pve and I don't think I've ever played anything beyond those two builds in pveland.

And zealous daggers for me.. yeah..
My 4 are...
Crippling Recruve
Poison Recurve
Crippling Longbow
Vampitic Flatbow
The latter is for speeding up npc kills. Love the prickling sounds..
That's for PvP as a cripshot.

Just to clarify for people who don't read that article, the Hornbow is superior under an IAS because the number of barrages you get under an IAS of a flatbow is barely any different than the Hornbow, so the 10% penetration is the only noticeable difference under IAS.
