calling all GW millionaires!
Antheus
People who are stinking rich did not strike it big from a random drop.
This is the type of person that sees oportunities and follows up on them. Selling an item for 1 million will make you instant millionaire. But 2 weeks later, you'll be poor again.
But the really high-end players will know how to constantly turn profit out of everything.
But as always, it takes money to make money. Farming - is not the way to make money. It's merely something for the upkeep. If you want to be rich, you'll need to understand how to use farmers to your advantage. They influence the prices of everything, yet make only marginal profits. But someone who understood the market, bought dozens of sup vigors once NF launched and made over 10k profit for each one of them once prices settled back.
Someone else kept investing into rubies and saphires during the period of 1.5 years. Now, their worth tripled without them doing anything.
This is where the true wealth comes from.

The reset the OP was talking about, was back around March I believe. Ectos were on sale at the trader for 100g each, along with every other material and I believe black dye too. Anet then shut the game down for 4-5 hours in which everyone was on guru posting how it "wasn't their fault they could buy materials so cheap". Though no one was allowed to keep what they bought.
Though I heard Anet didn't roll it back far enough and a select few who originally found out the glitch didn't lose all their stuff.

yeah I made my first million from amber easily.... until it crashed. It was that stupid Faction Farming weekend or something that ruined it and it never went back up.
VladDrakken
I've been playing GW for 10 weeks now and I can safely say that I've reached the million mark less than two months playing this game without Ettin runs, material price rollbacks, 55-farming, FoW, Ecto-Ruby-Sapphires and chest runs.
I did it through merchanting.
Now, I know that some of you might say its taking an advantage over people who dont know the prices, but merchanting is more than that. Its actually a skill of getting the lowest price possible, trying to break the seller into giving in. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I'd also like to second what one guy here said about establishing a relationship with the farmers and other traders/collectors because you need them to succeed. Besides, if someone is asking 10k for a Bone Dragon and you paid it, would you consider that taking advantage? Its not your right to actually say "Oh, it cost more!" ... its not the way it works. People that have bought houses, cars and other real life properties will support me on this.
I do, however, try to share my wealth these days since someone showed me the same kindness I'm showing when I was new. I've given away 5k to each guildmember last Thanksgiving, helped a few random people obtain max armor, give weapons to those who needs it, free runs to Vabbi (via the Desolation route), free green weapons, host live auction (thanks to those who attended last Sunday) and help new players in Chahbek Village. I also try to educate farmers/sellers whenever they ask for price checks ... but guess what? They still sell it to me way below street value.
All in all, its really easy to make money in this game by just hanging around the major trading cities.

I have gotton about 200k from getting grandmaster on a couple elonian characters. I just played through and cleared zones as I mapped and played the game. everything went to the merchant and heros.

Farming Flesh golems in Perdition rock with the buggy Baltazar Aura a little while after release.
And sold alot of 15>50 at the time of "The Great Inflation" period ( In May-June 2005, when a sucky 15>50 with a nice skin could go well above 100k )
I also did alot of Ettin Farming for runes (never got a superior vigor though T_T)
And then I made a fortune with my mini pets.

Playing the game normally; what a shocker.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but I made about 2.5 mil off Balthazar's Flames from that one weekend - sold a full stack of flames at 10k each, plus got a bunch of unlocks for myself on the side from the leftovers.
Made a bunch off of amber right after Factions came out, and another fair chunk gambling on rubies & sapphires before Nightfall.

I'm not a hardcore farmer who knows tons of solo builds but I've farmed vermins, ettins, minos and shirokins and made 10k a day and by 2 months I've gotten 1 mil. Surprisingly just playing the game can get you rich. When I beat NF I sold 3 book of secrets for 40k ea and at least 10 runbies and saphires.
Drazaar
I sympathise with the no luck. Ive played forever, solo necro farming, chest running determined quester.
Although im happy im not broke and happy to think I consider myself broke when I have 100k in my bank and have to be careful on spending. Ive never landed anything that would gain me over 60K from a single sell -_-.
To date since playing from beggining to now I havent even pulled one superior vig drop yet
I keep trudging along though. I figure like everyone I just need that one good luck hit to gain my solid footign on the cashflow.

i hit my first million farming rare skinned gold items then if needed i'd replace mods to make them perfect and resell them for massive profit using auctions.

I have 210 rubies and 210 Saphire that I bought for less than 2k each and would love to sell them but I have no room for the gold. I dont think ecto prices are going to be stable much longer.

You honestly think people can earn a million gold and spend it on one item? You don't earn money that quickly. You buy it. Anet needs a stricter policy on ebaying. It's sickening that cheaters make out better than players who work for their gold.

Well, I've only ever actually hit the 1kk mark twice, once in the early days of SF (when prices were insance, and my bonder was in high demand), and at the release of Factions (solo farming a couple of greens). But far more fun than that, is my latest venture. I just checked how many commissions I've done, and it turns out I've made over 1.2mil from painting digital pictures - not that my storage ballance shows it >_<.

Also, to the OP, how did the post items into presearing allow people to make huge money? So people where able to sell bags and runes of holding at inflated prices to people in pre, that doesn't mean somebody make hundreds of ectos off of it.

And a contribution: when collectors items (clothes) became salvagable - big profit for some people.
And FYI at least half (more imo) the time "predict the market" flops. For example, someone mentioned buying sup vigors before NF came out and getting rich off of them. Fact: Superior Vigors were 30-33k before NF came out, and a bit higher along the few months before. Fact: Sup Vigors DROPPED in price the first 2 weeks NF was out and they're just now going back up. I'd probably never gamble like this, not that I can afford to (skill caps for all skills on lots of characters cost a lot >.>)
@Firebaall: Exactly what I was thinking too.

I've made my money a few different ways.
Farming SF back when greens where over 100k+e
Farming FoW
Selling minipets
Faction Farmed amber for awhile back when it sold 4k+
Raisu/FoW chest runs.
Power selling for awhile.
Green farming on my sin
Sadly I wasn't one of the lucky people who got stacks of rares for 100g. I feel kind of cheated that I missed it and other people cashed in while nothing was done about it. But oh well I have made a few million my way. :P

buying ecto at 5k...selling at 8-9k...repeat every few months.
Priest Of Sin
Back in the DAY (like way back), I made lots of loot from Droks Runs (I did them for like 9k a pop during the off hours where there were lots of peeps wanting runs, but few runners. And this was back when it was very easy. Compared to now, at least)
Selling the 4 HoD swords i'd gotten for my characters. I swapped them out for wands and a 15%^50 axe, but I just threw the swords in my storage. Pretty cool finding out you have around 4 mil sitting in your storage xD
Finding that 14% while enchanted crystaline the first time I went into HoH and won. Sold for 100k+150 ectoplasm, as I recall.
Materials crash, I grabbed up 4 stacks of shards.
Ettin exploitation (yeah, I used it)
Griffin Power Farming (which later turned into Vermin Power Farming)
Queen farming with my duo build (1 mm, 1 ss) back when Kephkets refuge was around 20k a pop.
Getting Kanaxi's axe, hammer, and sword the first time I went to the Deep. Yeah, the party was POed :P
Dye farming in Pre-Searing (which I still do when i'm bored)
Getting Urgoz Longbow the first time I went into Urgoz Warren.
Farming around 70 Sskai's Swords before the build became well known and they still went for 40k.
Getting Bortak's Bone Staff and claw when I went into SF.
Getting Victos Bullwark the 4th run in UW2, and getting the Axe on my 6th run.
AND FINALLY: I noticed the trend that Anet nerfs something huge at the release of a new expansion, so I farmed 20 hours a day for a whole week (4 hours of sleep a day... at day 7, I wasn't a pleasant person) before the NF release.
And if you think i'm BSing you about being very lucky the first time I do things, you're wrong. I've yet to get another green from the elite missions... I exhaust all my luck on the first go

5k hours? nah..i thought mine was a lot..and judging from the fact that i started 14 months ago....
Rare mat reset? no
HOD? no
and out of that 1.3k hours (assuimg 100hours used during afk for 14 months), i believe the 1k hours were used trading and stocking up on things....so yes trading is my game...but im only active trading during hols....not when i've uni, during those times i only pvp in RA just to entertain meself
(its really a joke that i just manage to finish the first round of factions just 3 weeks ago..and if you'd ask me right now, i havent even finished prophecies campaign yet..still stuck and struggling with Defending of Droks quest..and for NF...the PVE is really awesome i must admit, just started playing some quest yesterday and now im just arriving the quest where Koss went missing...quite sad isnt it ><.....)
..and hence farming = not at all...the only time i did a chest run was when i was hyped bout sephis and i tried the build to check the difficulty of the run...
ebaying? no...but im just curious how it feels like ebaying gold..might try it and buy some gold someday before i quit
and to one of the above post, yes, people do blow a few million on something they really like to keep as collection and then try to earn the gold back again...

Heh, back when farming was very profitable I managed to break the 1mill barrier...twice.
Since 2-3 months before NF, my cash has plummeted. Now I only have 60k. Though my friend is farming me some Ectos/Shards, which should get me to around 140k-ish.

made my first "big" money in ToPK when Victos items were "precious" and SF
then after prices droped did so many naphui chest runs i cant count. Celestial items were in style then
then i did alot of runs (mostly to sanctum or to LA, i never tried runing Droks cuz i didnt have a warior at the time, and now that i have one i wouldnt bother cuz i saw how many skilled runners failed after the AI nurf)
after i got bored i took my monk to the Deep and sold plenty of nice Zodiaks for insane prices (too bad theres not 1 sinlgle soul there now, even the merchant looks like hes about to map away)
did 1 55/SS UW run per day (or per day when i log in) to keep my budget up (not every day that i got a gold req 9 zodial whatever) on bad weeks
and now since i cant remember when was the last time i did any of this im down to 20k
*sigh* my rit will be waiting for a VERY long time to get her FOW cuz i have no idea or motivation to farm anything. not to mention the chest nurf that makes me want to scream. that was so wrong! they should have at least leave the high end chests (like fOW, UW etc) as they were

As with the rest, I spent a pretty penny with all those, back then, newly released greens from Sorrow's and Cantha. Also did some group farms of FoW & UW, for some reason I'm very unluck in drops when I try to solo them. I've yet to get an ecto and my shard count is stuck at 5 total from my solo runs, but I can usually count on 3-6 of each if I go in group, go figure.
