Idea: Game PLUS
lyra_song
Concept: Game PLUS mode. edited thanks to Vangor's inspiration.
History: In traditional 1 person RPGs, like my favorite Chrono Trigger, Game PLUS means beating the game, then starting over the game again, but with all the stuff you had previously. Characters, character level, weapons, armor, etc all remains from the previous run through.
In the example of Chrono Trigger, game plus would let you play the Millenium Fair area with Crono and Marle and then jump into the portal to fight Lavos with only 2 characters in the very beginning of the game but with the full strength of characters that have already beaten the game, resulting in a different ending.
It basically gave you new ways to play, the second time through.
Synopsis: My idea is to apply the Game PLUS concept to Guild Wars. The concept is called "Legacy Mode". Basically....one of your characters plays through the game. Then the Legacy character is FOLLOWING your first character.
Heres how it works for Local-born characters.
Play the next chapter with a brand new character from start to finish.
Through out the game, there are various Legacy NPCS, who give you Legacy quests. These NPCs will set it up for your NEXT character to get through the game.
After you beat the game, those Legacy NPCs will give NEW quests to your other characters, in order to advance them faster through the game.
In Depth Examples:
Max Armor in early towns:
Legacy Armor NPC:
First time character: "You are journeying with a friend without proper equipment?! I can't have that! If you help me, i will be able to craft armor for your friend when they arrive here."
Second time character: "Ah, you must be ____'s friend. He/She has gone ahead of you, but He/She gave me the right tools so i can craft you some proper equipment, so you can hasten and catch up."
Get to Cavalon or House Zu Heltzer from Maatu
Maatu Keep Legacy NPC:
First time character: "Oh theres more of you coming? You know those Luxon/Kurzicks aren't very trusting. If you gain Proof of entry and bring it back to me, your friends should have an easier time getting to the Cavalon/House Zu Heltzer"
Second time character: "Ah! You must be _____'s allies. Here's something He/She left behind for you. Its a proof of entry. Show it to the Luxon/Kurzick guards and you should be able to enter the capital city of Cavalon/House Zu Heltzer."
You see how it works? You are chasing the previous character. They have already done things that make your second time faster/easier/different/harder, so the second time through, its slightly different!
other ideas:
Super Hard Legacy 4 Character Quests
Imagine a quest from an NPC that requires 4 different characters to complete? A quest that takes over the length of the game. A quest with a great reward.
Unlocking special 15k armor crafters via Legacy quests
Same idea as above, but with just 2 characters.
My reasoning: Don't you all wish you could just do that? Yes, ive seen the lands of this continent 4 times already. I have 17 characters. I can't play through 3 continents with 17 characters. Thats just...insane. I wont have any time for my guild if i focus on myself. My guild needs me and i barely play for myself and progress my characters. If i can get my characters to where they can access things faster, i can help my guildmates better.
This idea, will ALLOW players to have more freedom to play how they want, but only after they beat the game. PLUS it gives more incentives and variety so it doesnt feel like the same missions over and over again, even though it is essentially that.
Conclusion:
I think this idea is very reasonable compromise for Anet.
Plus the possibilities are very interesting.
You still have to play the game. But a much more accelerated pace for players who beat it. Getting your 2nd, 3rd, or 14th character through wouldn't take you more than a few hours (granted you have good friends who are willing to power their way through missions with you, and you leech along)
This essentially brings back the concept of running, which was fun.
Thoughts, Opinions, Pros/Cons, Flames, bags of platinum, rare weapons and RATING THIS THREAD is more than welcome.
No bags of poo, or live poultry please.

If you get to get max AL armor and stuff like that I want these people in 'PLUS mode' or whatever it's called to be in their own district and not be able to access the normal people world. Why? Low level-arenas would be screwed up even more than they already are, PvE would be exceptionally easy, etc.
As I've said before, If you don't want to play through the game as it is, with all the pros and all the cons, I don't see why you're playing it anyway.

The point of PLUS mode is not to make it easier, but faster, but only on the second run through.

But we can make it better~~ less cons, more pros, ne?

One of the main reasons why I mainly play with onle two pve characters is because it takes too long to go through everything from start to finish. I love the game PLUS feature that Squaresoft have incorporated into some of their games, and I think it would work nicely in GuildWars.
It shouldn't raise the concern of "but then I'll finish doing everything too quickly and then I'll just get bored and stop playing".
The limitations of not adding this "PLUS" feature for characters created in their homeland is really good too, for those who still enjoy re-living experiences.
it's not as though they (if Anet considered this idea) would put this in with no other incorporations so that it fits into the GW gamestyle. An easy fix is to cut-off GamePLUS characters from accessing this area. There's really no point in visiting low-level arenas if you've already beaten the game. By then, you should have 'some' concept of arena-play.

It is your choice to have 10 character. How about WoW adding x-times xp multiplier for every new character, including x-times increase in loot chance?
GW *allows* you to have multiple characters. It does not *require* you to.
And with PvP unlocks and PvP characters, there is simply no excuse to do any of that.
Rather than that, increase the non-linearity of storyline.

I like the idea

You are just saying that because you have 10 characters, i have 5 and i plan to create 2 more (one for me and one for my brother).
And i know i wont get the Ritualist hero for them all, it will just take too long.
So... get used to the idea of leaving some characters behind or start playing Gw 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

/signed kinda, more variety is always good.

See I am far from bored of Guild Wars personally and I would support this. I have done all of these things before, that is what numbs me to no end is when I have to run through all of these quests on a story I know, and realistically was not that enthralled with because I wanted to, the first time, cap some elites, get some greens, etc., and I want to do that a second time. But, I enjoy PvE characters, I have 4 level twenties because I have deleted a few to make space.
Certainly I do not want them to bypass missions, but, many of the beginning quests to access to the next area are annoying.
It should be called "Disciple mode", selected at creation (sort of PvE/PvP selection) within this your character cannot attend any PvP arenas besides the level twenty areas, but you will lose, outright lose access, to those quest lines, while your character will require the same level of experience. It is your task to figure out how to get through the required missions of the game early on at your level, but if you have friends they can certainly help.
When you are moving along the same line for required entry of areas then it should say "Oh you're that Heroes Disciple? I'll let you in." Or something along those lines of "This Hero has gone on ahead to do whatever for me, you should be able to meet them at this outpost." This does not unlock areas for you to map travel, but while you still need to say tame the Great Wurms, do you do not need to knock down the Colossus, though you'll need to run through there.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Gameplus mode lets you start over with items unlocked when you beat it the first time, so you have more camouflage and weapons.
Resident Evil 4: Gameplus mode lets you unlock more weapons and merchant carries different stuff.
whatever the application the same basic idea remains:
Beat the game once, make the second time through easier/faster/different.
Oh and im not bored with GW. I'm just overwhelmed with all the things i can do, it drives me nuts.
I like Vangor's idea of applying it as, the next character is following your previous one. Very nice.
Carth`
You could basically already do this in Prophecies. I completed the game with one character, then when I created the next one I got a run from Ascalon City to Droknar's Forge, bought the best armour, and my first character could unlock any late game skills and those can be bought at the trainer in Ascalon City with the money my first character made.
I don't want to see your suggestion implemented for various reasons, some mentioned some not.
For the last time, Guild Wars is NOT a single player game. There are many better single player games out there. When you complete Guild Wars the game continues into GvG, HA and elite areas, or trying to get prestige items and titles (or whatever YOU want to do). If you find that you played through Guild Wars and then had nothing to do, stop playing, you are playing the wrong game.

I have 10 characters, one for each class. I expect each to encounter different difficulties as the travel the map. Suddenly having the limitations removed seems a bit of a waste. If you want it to be easier, you can already "leech" off you friends and power you way up. I almost like that I have to slow down so i can train Koss and Tahlkora to appropriate levels for the req missions. Weapons and armor upgrades i can choose to ignore, but if you auto level my heroes, just cause one group of them has made it to the end game... that doesn't please me.

I kinda like the idea.. but i feel this is gonna lead to more single play and split the "cough" community "cough", as much as I hate repeating the same steps and cutscenes 5 times over or more, I just can't sign.. and it also seems.. pointless, max armor in pre???

On the note of restarting character, I think its possible and would extend the playablity if allow a character, once finish the game, be able to be "de-level" back down the level 1 and start over again. Essentially, it will be like making a new character (but you will loose your old one), however, you still be able to keep all your item, skills, skill points, titles, character name, etc etc.
One advantage would be you will be able to make a new primary proff out of it, thus add on to some change in playing style and experience. Also the price of getting new skill will be decrease down again. Could also give it several new quest, missions, with/and/or Rewards (gold, new armor? green weapons?) that was not accessible to the original character befoe. Also help fill up the mission area with "repeaters" along with new people.
Of couse, that also mean you have to level the character up again, and need to reach the end game or certain area (as the all the map outpost will be gone again) befoe you can get the armor or skills... same as befoe.
In sense.. just think of it as using your old character to start a new character...

I'm not sure I agree with the armor part because only in tyria does getting armor take forever.
But if game plus allows you to jump parts (maybe one mission will cover all of the maguma jungle) I might like that.
However I don't think getting the protector title should be a requirement, just finishing that particular campaign.

idon't think its a good idea. no offense but but your able to skip sections of the game like that then you'll get through it to fast and run out of things to do on the game way to quickly. you know, unless you live for pvp or hvh (for none nightfall people thats hereo verses hero). i myself am a pve person so i don't like getting through things to fast. also how else are you going to get money if your spending less time fighting monsters. you'd be poorer, and you'd be bored with the game quicker,

this is kinda sorta already in there with NF.
After beating the game once, you can use $$$ earned to buy max weapons from other players. And you can get a ferry to Docks to get max armor. Thus, you have max armor+weapons at level 2. The only issue is the Skills, and even those can be unlocked via PvP and be made useable to your PvEs.

edit and bump. I think its a better idea now.
i made it quest based. do certain quests on one character, and it will activate for you other characters.

This is a problem, becuase instead of having all of these spare slots that could be used for PvE creations, they are instead being utilised as "mule" and "PvP" characters - nothing bad, but there is no drive for someone to create another PvE character over these two.
Those who do have 10 character slots for PvE, good on them, they had the time and the patience to do such a thing, other people, still want to have the same experience, but would rather [b[experience[/b] without the needless time and patience of doing the same thing over and over again.
I totally agree with you on GW increasing non-linearity of the storyline, Alot of the new games that are coming out are doing a really good job with that idea, and it's about time Anet caught up.

ooo... That quest stuff is hot, This could tie in well with the GW mechanics. It can allow Armourers and weaponsmiths to have their own quests that allow you to 'unlock' them for GamePLUS characters. Nice. (And my characters will be able to have some contact with eachother... even if its from a third person... Im so happy)

The first metal gear solid on the PSX had also such a feature. You could finish the game saving the girl, getting a bandana, which gives you unlimited ammo, or rescue the scientist, getting a stealth cloak.
