FWIW, you don't have to be in the controlling alliance to get into those towns or any other towns that appear on the map. You don't even have to be in a Luxon guild.
The only Luxon/Kurzick restriction on mapping is the way you have to get 10k faction (the "Befriending the Luxons/Kurzicks" quests) to trigger the primary quest letting you down the respective side's mission path (and areas beyond.)
Both towns have controlling-alliance-only areas, yes, like most every outpost south of Matuu Keep. But you can get Canthan GMC without being in any of those members-only sections - I'm sure because I did it with my Tyrian ranger and she's never been to any of the restricted areas in those towns (the ones with the merchants and the fireworks dealers.)
There may be tiny bits of map available in those corners if you do get in, but there's enough map accessible to not require it, even to foreign characters.
GL on Cantha GMC, whatever way you find to do it!

You can reach any gated area by using the "recall" trick. Namingly
1) Switch your secondary to assassin and get the skill "Recall"
2) Leave the town in question with henchies in tow
3) Cast Recall on one of them
4) Use the mini-map flags to make them walk to the other side of the zone boundary
5) Cancel recall and you'll be teleported inside the town with them, but you'll still be in the "explorable area".
The gates etc are still there, but you can happilly walk right through them

Nah, it doesn't work anymore. If you put their flag "through" a zone portal they try to run to it, get a tiny ways past the portal, the flag disappears and they run back or reset position (can't recall which.) Grrr about it, too, as that'd have been such a wonderful trick for all sorts of things.

Shame they fixed that. Does the pre-flag method still work though? ie taking ranged/caster henchies and luring bad guys "near" the gate. When you stand as close as you can to the warp without zoning, they used to form up on the other side of you from the bad guys, which would conveniently be on the other side of the zone boundry.

I don't know. I've only tried sending them with flags and had them come back. Since they absolutely refuse to go through that portal (well at least to stay through it for more than a split second,) I'd guess not.

Pull the first enemy party to the merchant, and he will/should run past the gate. Recall to him. Works 100%.
