Tanking in PvP - help!
Charge
For starters, I'm referring to battles in Arenas (north shiverpeak arena)
Hey guys, I'm experimenting with warrior builds. Having noticed the lacking ability of a warrior to kill things in arenas without the higher up skills (I just reached North Kryta....) I decided to work on Warrior's real specialty - surviving.
My current build is:
W/R Level 14
Distracting Blow, Dismember, Rush, Wary Stance, Endure Pain, Charm Animal (I love my pet bird), Signet of Healing, Signet of Resurrection.
Strenght: 10 (7+3)
Axe Mastery: 8 (6+2)
Tactics: 6 (5+1)
Beast Mastery: 4
I however am finding myself rather useless. I can survive long enough to hit a couple things, but I can't damage things for the life of me. And I die easily to most enemies.
What can I do better?

North Kryta != PvP

PvP means Player vs Player.
I think the OP's talking about PvE? (Player vs Environment)
You shouldn't even enter a PvP battle (except town arenas) until you're lv20. Or else you'll already be starting out with a big disadvantage. (Less HP, less Attribute points for skills)

Well thats of no help. Besides the fact that "I should finish the game and get all the elite skills before doing arenas", is there any useful advice on how to play a survivor warrior?

you are going to have a very hard time in any arena without having available to you the best skills in the game. i would think (never did those arenas so i dont know) that those lower level arenas are filled with players that have alrdy run to droks and gotten max armor, are using the best possible weapons, and have capped/purchased the skills that they need. know thats not what you wanted to hear, but thats kinda how it is.
as for tanking, there is no point in surviving if you cant deal any dmg. sure, your the last one alive, but you cant even scratch the other team. now the entire other team will just pound you until you drop. if you still want to try and tank, a riptose tank will handle melee chars, but you will get eaten by casters.
id just go with a standard sword warrior build. they can be effective without any elite.

Just a general tip for PvP. Building yourself up to be a damage sponge is pretty much pointless because people will see that you are a big pillow wielding a wiffle bat. In PvE, enemies will attack the sponge, but in PvP, enemies will attack everyone else and wait until the end to spend their time on that person for the most part.
To relate this to you, I would suggest that you bring some self defense for your situation in the form of heal, condition removal, and/or hex removal, then devote the rest of your skill bar into dealing as much damage as possible. Running skills are very helpful to catch up to enemies so that you can deal your damage. Just use the Yaks Bend arena to get a bearing on how people act in PvP type situations and don't worry about who wins or who loses and you can later focus on builds and the other aspects that are part of the more serious PvP environment.

You find yourself useless.. Hm.. why is that? Maybe it's because warriors are not used as "tanks" in PvP..
You aren't bringing any attacks skills that do any real damage. Drop the pet (sorry.), lose the points in Beast Mastery, and pump up your weapon attribute. I'd consider lowering your strength a bit, but that depends on the requirement of your shield. Focus on getting your weapon attribute the highest of your attributes. Standard for warriors is 16weapon/9Str/11Tac or 16/10/10.

What can I do better? You seem to prefer axes. A good start. Taking a look at the skills available to you at this early stage, we can begin constructing a build. First, we need the thing warriors do best - damage. Dismember and Executioner's Strike, together, is your spike. Not much compared to what you will have later on, but you have deep wound and huge damage. Save up your adrenaline and then unload both at once (dismember first). Next you need an IAS, and a speed boost. You say you love your pet. Normally I would not recommend it, but yes bring it, after all the town arenas are for trying out stuff. You'll also need healing and a rez. One skill slot left. Here you can place some utility skill... You'll need an interrupt. Distracting Blow is very good for this.
That makes your skillbar look something like this:
[skill]Sprint[/skill][skill]Frenzy[/skill][skill]Dismember[/skill][skill]Executioner's Strike[/skill][skill]Distracting Blow[/skill][skill]Healing Signet[/skill][skill]Charm Animal[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]
As for attribute points, I can't say exactly what is best since I don't know what equipment you use. But make sure your shield req is fulfilled, then put a lot into axe (axe mastery 8 is not enough at all) and some into tactics to get some mileage out of Healing Signet (for this reason, it is obviously best to use a tactics shield with this build). Drop beast mastery to 0. If you use a tactics shield you might want to put strength at either 2 or 4 ot get the most out of Sprint.
As a warrior in PvP, don't ever try to tank. You (should) have enough armor to absorb damage, so people will prefer to hit other things than you. So hit them instead. The more aggressive you are, the better.

*Sigh* I guess I should explain why you shouldn't tank in PvP.
You're no threat. People will not attack you. They will go for your teammates first. Then, when you're alone, they'll all target you. You cannot kill them, and they may not be able to kill you. So, you're at a stalemate. The only way you'll win is if they ALL quit. And still, you'll be wasting time.

Also if u don't have max armor you can't even tank in the lower arenas cause people will jsut pump their offensive atributes threw the roof and roll you. Basicly go offence. Or get a droks run >_>.
Thom Bangalter
Here's how I rolled shiverpeak arena with my warrior:
got a run to droknar's forge. Got max gladiator armor, capped battle rage because it's right outside in the troll cave.
Use broken game mechanics=win.
Tanking sucks, arenas are just as bad, and warriors need to learn how to play offense, because tanking is pretty dumb just about everywhere. Unless you're playing to hold aggro in really tough areas, but I don't see how that's close to fun.

The OP has the completely wrong mentality. In PvP, Warriors are not tanks. Repeat after me. Warriors are not tanks. Warriors are not tanks. Warriors are not tanks. Good. Warriors that think they can tank other players in PvP are the absolute laughingstock of the Guild Wars PvP community. Now put skills in your bar that help you kill people, and you'll be a much more useful asset to your Arena team. Have fun (killing things)!
Dr Strangelove
I took particular pleasure in killing warriors set to tank with my mesmer in the Shiverpeak arenas. In PvP, there is never, ever, a reason to stand around and wait for things to hit you. Your goal should be to smack the crap out of their team before they manage to smack the crap out of you.
uberpwnage
Yeah, in PvP, the person who ends up tanking is the person who's the biggest threat.
Bringing tanking skills doesn't make you that big of a threat. Like all the people said, go offense. In this case, I would recommend a superior rune of axe mastery rather than strength; it doesn't work unless your build is primarily strength skills (you have 3, not to mention that at your level, a superior rune can seriously hinder you.)

Thanks all, that is the kind of reply I was looking for.
After trying things out I have to (grudgingly) agree with you. I do believe that borderline "tanking" in PvP is possible (I won't argue) but I agree that it is rather useless.
Just to reply to the fun part, I actually enjoy utility characters and sometimes a good survivalist can help everyone else. But thats beside the point.
After playing around I came to a build close to the ones you guys suggested. I just have a question, is Strenght really not important at all? I always had the impression that strength compliments the rest of the skills too damn well to be bypassed.
But thanks. I'll agree, tanking is not for this game, and I'll go smack something down. hard.

Strength is the most useless primary attribute, in general consensus.
Charge
Oh. Good to know in either case

Effigy
Strength is only worth raising to use a shield and/or to increase the effectiveness of skills linked to it, like Sprint or Rush. Most warriors will take it to 9-11 for this reason, depending on their build, but rarely beyond that. Some warrior play with 4 Strength.

Use broken game mechanics=win. (otherwise known as Im rich as heck and get run to where the best armour is and slap it onto my level 3 warrior)
In my opinion Tanking is not important to PvP gameplay, arenas are just as bad, and warriors need to learn how to play offense, because tanking is pretty dumb just about everywhere unless you're playing as part of a team and it your role to tank and manage aggro. Unless you're playing to hold aggro in really tough areas, but I don't think that that is fun. Fixed - Thom why not calm down a bit and let people discover the game by themselves? Not everyone can be as elite as you, good sir.

Tanking exists, sillies.
It's called Body Blocking.

my first rule about running a warrior is no matter what build your running, make sure you can cause deep wound followed up by a high damage skill. after inficting a deep wound, youll see the huge spike the next skill gives.

It has already been explained why tanking doesn't work in PvP, so I won't waste space on it.
That said, don't completely ignore your defenses when you're playing in un-organized PvP. The lower-level arenas and Random Arena in particular, you can't depend on any kind of backup from your team. Attacks are also quite random and the "warriors don't get attacked" rule doesn't apply - people generally attack whoever is attacking them. Healing monks are quite rare and you're often on your own when it comes to survival, so bringing a skill or two that keeps you upright is advisable. Good examples of these are Mending Touch (for condition removal. Don't put points in Healing Prayers) and Healing Signet.

It would mean that for the first time there is condition removal in the healing prayer's line.
That would be earth breaking.
In this context, yeah, not much difference.

I am calm. I just want to discourage people from playing poorly, especially in pvp.

Completely agree. Before the Tigers Fury nerf (used to be 33% IAS), I used about 8 beast mastery for my PvE warrior, 16 weapon, 11 tactics and the few remaining points in str. TF used to be THE BEST PvE IAS pre-nerf but now Flail is so im running - 16 weapon, 11 tactic, 9 str.
